(UMBUYU AT THE STATE FAIR.
Editors Index—Now that the
physical excitement caused by the re
cent State Fair, held in Atlanta, has
passed away, it may be well to glance
briefly at some features of its moral
influence. 1 wish to allude to but one
feature, of several, whose influence was
fearfully pernicious, and which cannot
be condemned too severely —I mean
the epidemic of gambling, that was
officially allowed to prevail all over
the grounds. The disgusting boldness
with which gamblers of high and low
degree were permitted to ply their
hellish, soul and body ruining task,
was the common talk of the town.
In the Constitution of Sunday, Octo
ber 21st, official communications are
published, between the Board of I‘olice
Commissioners and the President of
the Slate Agricultural Society. They
are suggestive documents. 1 hey
prove that the Police authorities of
A her city were thwarted in their at
tempt to suppress this gambling work,
by the fact that the Managers of the
Fair had authorized it; granted the j
privilege for <f,good round
'into th<s Ti-rcsaty of the
plea is made, too, that gambling arotir
State Fairs had always been allowed,
and that no law of the State was vio
lated ! This is “whipping the devil
round the stump" with a vengeance !
What has become of the virtuous
proclamations made by the Fair Man
agers, two or three years ago, officially
denouncing gambling, and refusing to
countenance even horse-racing?
Where is the jewel, Consistency ?
If this is to be permitted in future,
all Christian people will be glad to see
State Fairs that harbor and authorze
gamblers abolished entirely. The
little good Fairs, conducted in this
way, may do, is feartully overbalanced
by the moral wreck they create and
promote. Away with them !

When those unusually active little organs, the
kidneys, are neglectful of their duties and grow
sluggish. Fatty degeneration, Bright’s disease,
diabetes, and other dangerous maladies, are the
result of neglect to remedy this inactivity by
medicinal means. When the all important func
tions of the kidneys are imperfectly discharged,
those organs need stimulating, and the best pos
sible agent for that purpose since it performs
its ofhee without exciting them—is Hoetetter's
Stomach Bitters, which, in combinition with its
tonic aud cathartic properties, possess valuable
qualities as a diuretic. Both kidneys aud blad
der are strengthened by it, and the vigor which
it imparts to them, and the gentle but ef
fectual impulse which it gives to their opera
tions, is the beet possible guaranty against their
diseased. The Bitters ere invaluable
in other respects as well as the above, smoe
they remedy gen eral debility, uterine troubles,

Tribute of Respect.
BEV. J. M. STILLWELL.
The Baptist church of Lithonia, in its last
Conference, appointed a committee to draft
resolutions on the death of our late pastor. Bev.
J. M. Stillwell. That committee reports the fol
lowing '.J
Where ah, it has pleased our Heavenly Father
to remove from our midst, to mansions on high,
our dearly beloved pastoi ; and whereas, it is
meet that wo, in our sorrow, should express our
feelings of sympathy to the bereaved family,
and to our sister churches which were also un
der Ids pastorate, therefore be it
1. Resolc&l, That in the death of our dear
brother and paster it is no ordinary loss that
our church sustains. Brother Stillwell was, in
deed, a true and faithful man of God ;
conscientious in even the smallest matters,
guided by the Word, it was ever his chief aim
and pleasure to promote the interests of that
great cause to which he devoted his entire time,
is energy and talents. In him the sick and the
sorrowing, the poor and the distressed, ever
found a sympathizing friend. But that noble
life-tree will never more on earth bear fruit or
blossom ! It has been cut down in its strength
and beauty, and tbe past is all that remains to
us of brother Stillwell. That voice which fell
so frequently upon our ear, kindling the deep
est emotions and bestirring to more earnest
zeal and effort in the Master’s cause, is now
silent forever. But the impressions and influ
ences of that earnest and devoted life remain
vivid and strong, ever pointing us to that path
that leads to glory •ternal.
2. That we tender our heartfelt sympathy to
his dear family and to his sorrowing churches,
bidding them be of good cheer—“ The .Lord
gave and the Lord hath taken away ; blessed he
the name of the Lord.’’
3. That a copy of theHO resolutions be placed
on our church record, and a copy also forwarded
to the afflicted family.
4. That a copy oe sent to The Index and
DeKalti News, for publication.

Deacon M. A. Hairston introduced the follow

Resolved, That J. C. Austin, Wm. Sheppard
and Joseph Walker be appointed by tho church a
committee to draft a preamble and resolutions
commemorative of the love and respect we bear
to the memory of our beloved pastor, Rev. J.
M. Stillwell, deceased.
The committee made the following report:
W UEitEAS, it has pleased our Heavenly Father,
in His wise but inscrutable providence, to take
fiom us, in the midst of his usefulness, our
highly esteemed brother and pastor, Rev. J. M.
Btillw'ell; and whereas, it is meet that we should,
ou the present occasion, and for the comfort
and consolation of the bereaved family, give
expression to our footings and testify to depart
ed wortli i therefore be it
Resolved, That in the death of brother Still
well our church has suffered a severe loss, and
a sad void is left in the denomination to which
he belonged.
2. That while we deplore deeply his sudden
death, yet wo have the blessed assurance that ho
is now in the enjoyment of that rest which is
reserved fot tho people of Goi .
8. 1 hat we commend his sorrowing compan

all things well, exhorting them to cultivate Rn
humble and submissive rosignatiou to tho will
of their Heavenly Father.
4. That a copy of these resolutions to spread

copy for publication, and a copy be sent to the
afflicted family. J. O. Austin,
