Children’s Corner. B,v. T. o. BOIKIN, But. 8.8. Ed BIBLE EXPLORAIIONS. Divid returned to Ziklag. After three days a man came and bowed down be fore David. Hie clothee were rent, earth was upon hie head,as if he were in great distress. He said. I have escaped from the camp of Saul. Many of the peo pie have fled, also many have fallen and are slain. S tul and Jonathan are dead David said, How do you know that? He answered, when I was on Mt Gilboa I saw Saul leaning on his spear. He asked me who 1 was, then said to me. stand upon me and slay me for lam full of sorrow. I was sure he could not live, so 1 stood upon him after he had fallen. I took the crown from his head, the bracelet from his arm and have brought them unto my lord. David anl his men rent their clothes, mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and Jonathan, for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel. David said to the man, who are you ? He answered, a stranger, an Amalekite. Then David said, were you no' afraid to destroy the Lord’s anointed ? So he called one of his young men and had the Amalekite slain, saying unt» him, Toy ....be upon thy tor thy hath testified....thee, saying I have....the Lord’s , ~ , . Then David sang a song in which be lamented Saul and Jonathan. David enquired of the L >rd if he must Mto Israel and to what p ace. The said Hebron, so David went to there and the chief men of the tribe of Judah anointed him king. One of Saul s son’s who escaped from the battle was ruling over the other tribes. His name was Ishbosheth. Two wicked men went into Ishbosbeth’s house and cut off his head while he slept. This they carried to David who was very much displeased and • unman led his young men to kill them. They cut off their hands and feet and hung them over the pool He br There was a long war between the family of Saul and David, but at last David was king over all Israel. We hope our explorers will not fail to read the first four chapters of second Samuel. They will read in them of the death of Asahel and Abner and about other things. .. . , All the tribes of Judah assembled at Hebron to annoint David, saying ‘‘Be hold we are thy bone and thy flesh. David and his men went to Jerusalem, where he took possession of a castle on M unt Zion where he made his home and called it the city of David. He went on and grew very great. The king of Tyre was a friend of David, who sent him cedar trees, car penters and masons to build him a house. , „, . The Philistines came to fight against David but God was with David and gave him victory. ENIGMAS. 1 Who sheldered David in an hour of need ? 2. Who died ’mid household grief and public gloom? . 3. No one would think that little To-tote was a girl who could enjoy standing on her head. She was as shy as her kitten that hid under chairs whenever a strange step came near; and she scarcely ever looked any one in the face without first letting her long soft eyelashes fall upon her cheek. And yet To-tote’s favorite de light was to stand on her head. Her nurse laughed and cried out, “0 To-tote, again on your head I” at which To-tote would laugh and go on with her play. THE CHRISTIAN INDEX AND SOUTH-WESTERN BAPTIST: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 71, 1881. Now To-tote had for a gift from her ?[ood grandmother, a gold spoon with a ancy T. engraved on the handle. With this she ate her supper of bread and milk, and with this she sipped her soup at dinner. Indeed, it was always laid at To-totes’ pl de, for whethershe required it or not, she always wanted to see it there. And whenever she saw it she stood on her head I “Why, To tote!” you will say, ‘how could you do such a thing ?’* You would not be so surprised if you should see her. Take your own bright spoon at breakfast, or at dinner, or at tea, look inside its shining bow), and you will see a very good likeness of a little boy or girl that you and it will be wrong side up. That was what To tote so much enjoy ed doing at supper. It was very funny to her pretty French eyes to see the smiling little lady as if she were walking with her feet in the air. “Oh, oh,” she would laugh, “you will get dizzy in there, Miss To tote!” And nurse would add, “Yes, yes, she is very dizzy, N>w bid her good night, To-tote, and we wdl light the candle and goto bed.”— &t. Nicho'as. Warner’s Sale Kidney and Liver Cure. Alphabetical Curiosities. — The protean nature of the vowel sound is familiar to all. A few amusing exam ples will show that the consonants are as bad: B makes a road broad, turns the ear into a bear, and Tom into a tomb. C makes lime clime, hanged changed, a lever clever, and transports a lover to clover. D turns a bear to beard, a crow to a crowd, and makes anger danger. F turns lower regions to flower re gions. G changes a son to a song, and makes one gone. H changes eight into height. K makes now known and eyed keyed. L transforms a pear into a pearl. N turns a line into linen, a crow into a crown, and makes one none. P metamorphoses lumber into plum ber. Q of itself has no significance. S turns even to seven, makes hove shove, and word sword, a pear a spear, makes slaughter of laughter, curiously changes having a hoe to shaving a shoe. T makes bough bought, turns here there, alters one to tone, changes ether to tether, and transforms the phrase “to allow his own ” “to tallow this town.” W does well; e. g., hose are whose? are becomes ware, on won, omen wo men, so sow, vie view ; it makes an arm warm, and turns a hat into—what? Y turns fur to fury, a man to many; to to toy, a rub to a ruby, ours to yours, and a lad to a lady. Snakes as Life Dz-tboyebs.—The loss of life in iudia due to the ravages of venomous snakesis almost incredible. Yet Consump tion, which is as wily and fatal as the dead liest Indian reptile, is winding iis coils around thousands of people while the vic tims are unco iscious of its presence. Dr. R. V.' Pierce's " Golden Medical Discovery ” must be used to cleanse the blood of the scrofulous impurities, for turbercular con sumption is only a form of scrofulous dis ease. “Golden Medical Discovery” is a sov ereign remedy for all forms of scrofulous disease, or king's evil, such as tumors, white swellings, fever sores, scrofulous sore eyes, as w 11 as for other blood and skin diseases. By druggists n » > The wonderful changes made at the old favorite American Hotel, opposite Indepen dence Hall, Philadelphia, and the still more wonderful reductions of prices is fast giving new life and prosperity to the house, while speculation is rife as to how so much can be given for the money. 11 IN EITHER LIQUID OR DRY FORM H W That Acts nt the same time on 3 TSS LIVSR, THS SO WSLS, B fl THS SIDHSTS.
