6 The Household. For Ths Chbibtun Indkx. RECOMPENSE. LEONORA BECK. Fair Autumn la regally clad. In robes with splendor dyed ; A golden crown rests on her head; Her treasure. she strive. to hide, By spreading a mantle of purple mlat O'er barveat fields and fruits sun-kissed. O, Autumn’s voices are sad, As the dying swan's so't lay, But Autumn’s voices are sweeter Than the sweetest sounds of May; They speak to the soul, and waken much That the gayer seasons can never touch. Who can gaze on that mass of woods, All glowing with gorgeous tints,— Borne parts in shadow, and some Where the sunlight gleams and glints— Who can look on this, and then repine Because the June roses faded lang syne? When life's glad springtide Is past, When Summer's bright blossoms lie dead, And wheru they lately smiled, Blush Autumn fruits instead,— Then to this truth the spirit wakes: Time brings as many sweets as he takes. Bowdon, Ga. THE RELIO IO US PAPER IN A NE IF HOME. What spectacle on earth is more beauti fully interesting than that of a young couple going to their own home to enter upon the experiences which there await them; and who can contemplate them in this new joy, dignity and responsi bility, without the most fervent prayers and wishes for their abiding happiness and well being? Surely, he who can is more or less than human. And yet we know moat assuredly that only the blessing of God makes rich and adds no sorrow, though it sanctifies all sorrow that may be sent. A short time since 1 was examining in company with other friends, the beauti ful and costly presents which had jus' been bestowed upon a young bride, and which were to adorn and enrich her new home. Among them, comparatively un noticed, lay a beautiful family Bible. Most of all, this impressed my mind and I could but think that if their new; home should be founded on this Word, the best things iu life would be theirs. The patriarch’s covenant was, "Where 1 have a tent God shall have an altar.” Happy is that home in whose centre is the family altar. A good religious newspaper, coming into a newly-established home, is a healthful and 'blessed influence for many reasons: 1. If both be converted, the regular weekly visits of their paper remind them cf the propriety and obligation of mak ing religion the constant, abiding habit of their united life. 2. If one be con vet ted the paper com ing weekly with its richly-laden columns, is an oft-repeated and unobtrusive plea. Its voice will be for Curist, and it will help to point and lead to him. "I be gin in the way, the Lord led me I” 3. If neither be converted, it is a good friend to have in the home. It is a weekly visitor, a letter, a sermon, an in vitation, a reminder. It is one of the best gifts, because— 4. It provides good and valuable read ing in large variety, so that you seem to get the most for the leas*. Here are the departments devoted to home and its in terests ; to the State and its news ; to the markets ; to the garden and to the flow ers ; to the Sabbath-school ; to God’s Word and its intelligent study. There is something *or each and much for all. If you caul,’take but one weekly paper and wanted that for its secular new , a good religious paper would still be best. 5. Especially valuable is it for Sabbath reading. Learn to spend the hours of this sacred day, not occupied at the sanctuary, in the sacred realm of your own home ; and make your home more sacred by the sanctifying of the day. The religious paper will help to occupy the day In such a manner as to make it positively useful to your spiritual life. It is not enough, however, that we do not openly violate the Sabbath. The day brings its best blessings only when in its sacred hours we have grown in the spiritual knowledge of God’s holy truth. What helps to this is a blessing. I always feel that I have done a good piece of work when I have succeeded in introducinga religious paper intoa home. I feel that it is as good as to have preached a sermon. Tiie paper will go on its errands, rain or shine; and every time it goes will take some message to make brighter and better the home or the heart to which it is welcomed.— Rev. Edward P. WhdUon, in Journal and Met tenger " Scmmkr Complaint "—For diarrhoea* dysentery, bloody -fl ux, cramps in stomach, and colic, whether affecting adults, children, or infants, Dr. Pierce’s Compound Extract of Smart'Weed is a sovereign remedy. It is compounded from the best French brandy, Jamaica ginger, smart weed or water pepper, anodyne, soothing and healing gums. Bold by Two little girls, Lily and Violet, were playing in a yard where they had strung some twine for a clothe’# line, and were washing their dolls’ garments in a dimin utive tub, and banging the n out to dry. Along came Lily’s brother Master Jack, the juvenile tease, and with one sweep of his hand jerked the whole day’s washing from the line and scattered it on the grass. Lily bubbled over in tears at once. Violet was saddened, too, but the necessity of playing peacemaker in the impending family quarrel was the first thought in mind; so she said, sooth ingly:—“Never mind, Lily: let’s play Jack was a high wind.’’—Syracuse IhrM. Solomon in all his glory never uttered anything wiser than the following, clip ped from an exchange: A very quick and clever child made an observation to her governess the other day which had a great deal of truth in it. “How is it, my dear,” inquired the lady, “that von do not understand this simple thing?” "I do not know, indeed,’’ she answered, with a perplexed look. “I sometimes think I have so many things to learn that I have not time to under stand.” Persons who stand upon their feet, whether men or women, are often troubled with seri ous pains and weaknesses in the back, loins and other parts of the body. It has been proven bevond a doubt, however, that Wars ner’s Safe Kidney and Liver Cure is a certain preventive of these troubles. THE CHRISTIAN INDEX AND SOUTH-WESTERN BAPTIST: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1881. HEALTH NOTES. HOW MILK SHOULD BCTAKCIf. Milk should be slowly taken in mouth fuls, at short iotervalx, and thus it is rightly dealt with by the gastric juice. If milk be taken after other food, it is almost sure to burden the stomach and to cause discomfort and prolonged indi gestion, and this, for the obvious reason, that there is insufficient digestive agency to dispose of it. And, the better the quality of the milk, the more severe the discomforts will be under these condi tions. CUTTING children’s HAIB. A correspondent of the Ledger says: “It does not improve the hair of older children to clip it. If any good is ex pected to result, it must be cut ihort. Cut ting the hair improves it in thickness and length. I have one daughter, 16 years of age, who never had her haircut till she was 14. Her hair was thick and short; so I had it cropped short, and now it is a couple of inches below her waist. My other children (15 and 13) have had their hair short till three years ago, and they now have lor.g, thick hair, upon which they can sit. Except in very few cases, it does not injure the curling pro penalties of hair to have it cut once or twice.” Eminent Dr J. J. Caldwell. Baltimore, Md . states : "I have used Golden's Liebig's Liquid Eitract of Beef and Tonic Invigora tor largely in Debility, Febrile and Nervous Diseases, and I have found it one of the most reliable of nutrient tonics now in use or to be found in pharmacy.” 1 Remember the name. On ttie following day the mother heard her son scolding the nurse. "What's the matter, George?” she said. “Why,” said George, *'l told nurse to extinguish the dog and she won’t,” If you are sick, read the Kidney Wort advertisement in another column, and it will explain to you the rational method of getting well Kidney*>Wort will save you more doctor’s bills than any other medicine known. Either is equally efficient, the liquid is the easiest, but the dry is most economical. —Interior. A dear little girl of a few summers after kneeling in prayer, proceeded to descend for breakfast. When about half way down stairs she was observed to retrace her steps; her mother called to her to the morning meal but she re plied : “I am going back to say my pray ers.” “You have already performed that duty,” replied her mother, “but I forgot to tell God something,” said the little one. From Chas C. Fulton. Baltimore, Ameri can office, April 20th, 1876: “Mr. C. P. Knight, Esq.: Dear Sir—The * Liquid Enamel Paint,’ manufactured by the ‘New Jersey Enamel Paint Co.’ for which you are agent, speaks so favorably on the entire front of the new American building that, so far as Baltimore is concerned, it is hardly necessary for me to give expression to the entire satisfaction it has given. It has now been on nearly four months, and pre sents as bright and clean an aspect as it did the day upon which the building was finish ed, showing, as a weather paint, it has no superior. Respectfully yours. "CHAS. C. FULTON." C. P. Knight, Sole General Agent, 93 W. Lombard St., Baltimore. Apple Pancakes.—Make one quart of batter as for any other pancake, and add one cup of finely chopped apple. The batter must be stirred each time a spoonful is taken out in order to equal ize it. Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound revives the drooping spirits, invigorates and harmonizes the organic functions, gives elacticity and firmness to the step, restores the natural lustre to the eye, and plants on the pale cheek of beauty the fresh roses of life’s spring and early summer time. The Blessed Sabbath. —Make the first day of the week a bright, cheerful, sweet day at home, and it will shed its radi ance on the other six days of work and Clay. Do not limit its sacred freedom y domestic “Blue Laws,” which woulu make it to the litde ones anything but “day of all the week the best.” But with music and prayer, with the Bible and other good reading, with cheerful conversation and gentle graces, with the glow of the altar and the spirit of the sanctuary, with thankfulness and love to God and man, any Christian house hold can make it a perpetual blessing to themselves and the community in which its lights are kept burning. — Faith and Works. Floorcloths.—Do not put carpets in your closets; oilcloth or matting is much better, and can be easily kept free from dust. Matting after being swept should be wiped with a damp cloth. Hot salt and water will thoroughly cleanse it and will not discolor it. From Frank L Haralson, State Librarian, Atlanta, Ga , January 14th, 1880: “Messrs.
