The voters in New York, Ohio, and Massachusetts seem to have concluded that if the Demo cratic party had to have a riot, before it could carry out the first pledge of its platform, there was no telling what trouble would come be fore the rest of its promises were fulfilled. Those States were not affected by the free silver craze and the disaffection cannot be accounted for by the supposition that the fail ure to vote free coinage was resented. The tariff was the issue in Ohio. was as much against free ggfliinage as Neal, and if any national Eotes in that State, t protection. There ts massed their rpose of giving the ssion that there is it tariff reduction, o is one of the chief he McKinley tariff, lia, it is the home classes, and they the help of their ocal issues did more lam age. So it was in Chicago, where the Demo cratic ticket was elected, with the exception of the judicial ticket, #hich ' r w#s Elected by Republicans. There again the Republicans nomi nated a clean Democrat, Judge Gary, against the machine candidate of ’the Atgeld faction. Chicago, a city overwhelmingly Democratic, has thus set her seal of condemnation onoorruption. She has effectually Governor Atgeld for his pardon- bf the anarchists and his at tack on Gary, the upright judge. With this lesson before them, the Democrats ot Illinois will hardly re nominate Atgeld for Governor when his term expires. The whole coun try has cause to rejoice over this re sult, for an endorsement of Atgeld by Chicago Fftu.ld have encouraged - -anarchy to a dangerous extent. The ' appeal from Atgeld to the people has been heard, the governor has been reversed and the anarchists re buked. The yerdict of Massachusetts is hard to understand unless upon the theory that its voters believe the Democrats in congress have not the ’ courage of their convictions, as re corded in the Chicago platform. Massachusetts jpar excellence’ the State of SQipd men. Tar iff alarms may have played some part in the revulsion. The result of the elections in Vir ginia and Kentncky is a revelation. It has been contended that large of Democratic voters through out the South were in open revolt because the Democratic congress failed to pass a bill for the free k coinage of silver. Now we know better. The issue was squarely made in Virginia between Populists and Democrat.. been °P U „ 18, I out in Democratic majorimt it ever was. New York Times : A workman in the senate barber’s shop in Wash ington is credited with saying that the senators are “the most peaceful’’ men to shave he has ever met, though some of them are very particular. One senator, he says, he has twice 1 shaved three times in one day, not because his beard grows~ very fast, but because the senator “likes th&. sensation.” Another senator “hasß a pair of little side whiskers of whichj he is very, fond and to which he defl votes any amount of attention.” isl! did not Peveal all this to any senatflS and to'the helpless man to whomflll was communicated he said, wilflS| despairing tone. “You know not allowed to talk to our senatorial customers unless they talk to us first.” Who would not wish to be a United States senator while being shaved ? Augusta is not much of a blow hard, but she is a workhard. In the past ten years she has made amazing progress. Under the wise and courageous leadership of Colo nel Patrick Walsh, she has done wonders. Hats off and up in the air for Augusta! That’s the kind of community we ought to be. That’s 1 the kind we used to be. Why not be it again? Inaction is enervating and ' moralizing. What nervQ. 1 men tell us that the leading towns of this section are almost all doing fairly well. Now let us quit talking hard times and pull ourselves together for an aggressive movement. If we sit still things will run over us, but if we get up and get we will ride in front of the procession. Let every man quit talking blue. It he can’t say a good word, let him keep his mouth shut. Let us get together and move together and the wagon will get out of the rut. Messers Corput and Neel must not weaken on the registration bill. “He that putteth his hand to the plow”—you know the rest. Other communities all around us are moving. Look at Augusta! Look at plucky little Cedartown! Let the whole town get inebriated with energy. Then we will have hilarious times once more. When a man says anything about hard times, say unto him “Get thee behind me Satan!” A waiting fight is the hardest of all to win. Get up and get. The days of “Masterly inactivity” are w Our daily cup needs a dash ot courage. It is time to take the aggressive. Get up and get—you bet. Get up and get—you bet. Mr. Joel Chandler Harris ,of the Constitution asks us , whether it would be thrifty to let his place be put up and sold’for taxes. It will hardly pay as a means to get i free advertising. If you want to I sell your place better pay a news- THE ROME TRIBUNE. FBIDAY MOKMNG, NOVEMBER 10. 1898. paper than pay the marshal. At any rate we would advise you to pay your tax early and save costs. “Dolce far niente” is the Italian for “innocuous desuetude.” We have had enough of both. Here is one place where we will have to go back on Grover. GET A MOVE ON! [A song of the tunes.] Get a move on! Get a move on! If you don’t you’ll not improve on The worst you ever saw.
