Coming at the end of a well spent life it is an ambition of the highest and purest kind, and for our part we would like to see it gratified, knowing that in doing so, the people of Georgia will place in office a pure man, of high intelli gence and sound judgment. LOWELL’S LETTERS The publication of two volumes of James Russell Lowell’s corres pondence throws a pleasant light on the character of that genial, whole souled man of letters. The letters written when he was United States Minister to England show the gen uineness of the man’s character. He detested pomp, and in spite of the charge of anglomania, he was thoroughly patriotic. W from London in he . hat there are many signs of increas-1 ng activity in the projection of on-1 terprises and in the number an nounced as definitely decided upon. A good deal of activity is noted in I municipal improvements, especially I in water work systems, which are to be established in a number of towns. I The iron business of the Binning-1 ham district is reported as showing considerable improvements though restricted by the uncertainty of tar-1 iff legislation. -In the enlargement of established plants a fair showing is also presented. The flour milling industry shows considerable activi ty, twenty-three corn and flour mills i ~AAmnlp.fpd TAcentlv, the having been compietea reucuuxj, greater part of which are in Tennes-1 gee and Kentucky. The industries reported for the past week are of great diversity, including box facto ries, ice factories, iron mining com-1 panies, carriage works, steam laun dries, broom factories, phosphate I mining companies, coke plants, saw I mills and many others. re ' * a J ■m’" t s ’‘z ' ’Zrf '* ' a"* EB \ e single .’*Bld be a mile and TH | less than tered throughout every town and village in the United States. The Cosmopolitan’s popularity is well deserved. The Tribune clubs it with the Weekly edition; both for two dollars a year. The fiendish plot to abduct Baby Ruth from the White Hoffee shows that men classed as cranks are likely to be criminals of the most diabolical character, to be kept in check by the strong hand of tne law, and not entitled to much mercy when they are caught. Many persons labor under the impres sion that laying up treasures in real es tate in Jerusalem —not the New Jerusa lem, but the old one in Palestine—will be a paying investment. Ground there has advanced in value at a rate that would make even a Chicago real estate specu lator turn green with envy. An acre of ground in Jerusalem that sold for SI,OOO in 1865 brought in 1891 $24,000. A plot that in 1890 went for $435 an acre sold in 1892 for $2,178 the acre.
