Under the above somewhat furi ous name the author has set forth in some 300 pages a theory of the universe. Resting on the firm foun dation science is built upon he •eeks to prove the existence of the •oul on a theory of the conservation of energy. The book is a philoso phical essay disguised as a “celestial Romance.” Stripped of its narative character it stands aa a conception of the unconceivable. A bold at tempt to carry philosophy into the regions of the unknown. Beginning with the last •conclusion of the phil- ? osophers as to the ultimate constitu- inert, life- Ve EBgliah navy, for it has been pronounced weak by great naval ex perts in view of the work it has ex pected to do and the supremacy of the seas it was supposed to be capa ble of maintaining. Speaking on this subject Mr. Jaques said yester- day: “The desire for the further devel opment of the British navy is so gen eral among all classes of British subjects that the omission of a bud get for this*, purpose would surely cause the fall of any party that did >ot urge it. Lord Hamilton’s recant article on England’s naval strength •was only-one of many arguments for the increase of the British and it France, two elements important bearing—-one, the slowness in com pleting her skips, the other that her energy and finances will be princi pally devoted to preparing her army k J, meet that of Germany. If France ■ t make adequate appropria. Bions for both her army and her navy, Ke will let her navy wait, less in B- ca ge O s the defeat of her army, done by her navy shall ■ BL,- wa r indemnities. estimates of rhe naval strength of the powers, Italy Spaih, and Austria appear to be left out of the problem. Whether this is due to their depleted treasuries dees not appear. But Russia’s pow er is always recognized, no matter how much money she borrows, while the financial strength of the French peasantry will long remain a bul wark, no matter how volatile the Government or how few France’s military leaders.” A BIG BURDEN LIFTED. We clip this Washington correspondence of the New York Times: “Chairman Wilson has had pre pared a statement, showing the quan tities and values of imported mer chandise for 1892 and 1893; also the rates of duty and duties paid for these years, together with the rates proposed by his bill, based upon like importations. The duty received under tha McKinley bill for the year 1892 was §173,098,471. The duty estimated under the Wilson bill for a like period would have been §107,- 690,170, making an estimated de crease per annum of $65,407,900. The total duty received under the McKinley law for 1893 was $198,- under S,-X. of carrying into wishe, of the people. An unorganized army, However strong in numbers, is only a mob, which may easily be defeated by a smaller but thor oughly organized band. It seems to me, therefore, to be absolutely necessary|for the supporters of the gallant old General to or ganize promptly and effectively. I would ’suggest the formation of an “Evans Club,” and nominate as president of the club that o[d war-horse of democra cy, M. A. Nevin. Under his leadership Floyd county will triumphantly enroll herself under the banner of that dauntless hero, genuine statesman and noble, upright gentleman, Clement A. Evans. Very Respectfully, Max Meyerhardt. This is a capital suggestion, and if Mr. Nevin will serve no better' choice could be made. THE END. [From All the Year Round.] The end draws near. By fates unseen directed Onr paths diverging tend. To lives monotonous the unexpected , Comes as a friend, While for a moment Joyous smiles of meeting The gathering shades dispel. “Ave etVa’e!” Lo! the ancient-greeting; Hale and Farewell! A moment more! And sadness follows after, In bursts of keen regret, That put to silence all the happy laughter Wherewith we met. The past is dead, the present swiftly fading, And in the future dwell Hopes faint and few, our longing glance evading, Hail and Farewell! The time has come I ’Mid alien scenes and faces Our lessening lives must He, And pass henceforth through solitary places Beneath a stormy sky. Clasp hands, old friend! Against our best endeavor The tides of memory swell. Part we as those who part Indeed forever, Hail and Farewell I z-/ I • THE HOME TRIBUNE, TUESDAY MORNING. JANUARY B. 18.4 sfsfsdf H. D.
