The Proposed Tariff Changes
Does not Hurt Much.
THE PITTSBURG DISTRICT.
Protectionist Claim That the
Wilson Bill Continue to
Cripple Business.
Pittsburg, Jan. 11.—An investigation
extending over a week has failed to dis
cover one mill or factory in the Pitts
burg district that shut down on account
of the proposed tariff changes. The Wil
son schedule, being published just as
manufacturing business of all kinds was
recovering from the depression caused
by the money stringency, gave protec
tionists an opportunity to declare that
the mills were closing on account of th<
tariff outlook. From June 30 to Dec. 81
manufacturing plants ran irregularly,
and when the report of the ways and
„ means committee was made public pro
tectionists said times would get worse.
Every time a mill or factory closed,
whether from an accident to the ma
chinery, Orders being worked off or re
pairs to be made, the Republican press
seized upon it as an opportunity to pub
lish the statement that the shut down
was caused by the tariff fears of th<
manufacturers.
One case may be cited: J. Painter &
Sons’ mills have an almost exclusive
monopoly on the manufacture of cotton
ties. Several weeks ago manufacturing
was stopped in some departments to teal
down part of the plant to make room for
additional fnrnaces. The product of the
mills is shipped south by water, the low
transportation charges enabling the
company to compete with the world.
Labor saving machinery is also being
put in to lower the cost of production.
Yet this shut down was charged up to
the Wilson bill.
That the iron manufacturers have no
fear that tariff changes will cripple theii
business is proved by the fact that many
are making extensive improvements.
William Clark’s Sons have purchased
land adjoining their mills and will make
improvements to the amount of $250,-
000.
It is a significant fact that all the
manufacturers who are making improve
ments are doing so with a view to man
ufacturing in lines not covered by ths
Carnegie Steel company. That largo
concern has, by its latest improved ma
chinery and reduced wages, got into a
position where no other concerns in the
district can compete with it on its pro
ducts.
Shipbuilding: on a Boom.
Augusta, Me., Jan. 11.—The ship
builders of Maine are looking forward
to a prosperous year. The year just
ended was not prosperous. The general
business depression affected the freight
business on the seas, and there was but
little demand for new vessels. The ton
nage has not been so light for many
years, being but 10,388, against 60,000
to 80,000 in years of prosperity.
Butrthings have changed. Bath build
ers already have contracts for six large
schooners, and Dunn & Elliott, of Rock
land, will build a four-masted schooner
of about 1,000 tons. H. M. Bean, the
Camden builder, has begun a four-mast
ed Schooner of 2,200 tons, for coal carry
ing, and has a contract for another of
1,800 tons capacity. Other reports are
equally encouraging.
Charged to The Wilson Bill,
Springfield, 111., Jan. 11—The
Springfield Woollen mill is the only fac
tory here which makes any claim to be
ing affected by the tariff bill. The pro
prietor, J. T. Capps, says the mill closed
Some time ago mainly on account of the
tariff bill, but he made no announcement
of that sort to the employes.
The Illinois Watch factory has been
closed for several months, and the
Springfield Rolling mill has for a good
while been running with a greatly re
duced force, but in neither case is it
claimed that the tariff bill is responsi
ble.

Didn't Talk So First.
Oswego. Jan. 11.—The Conde Knit
ting mills are the only mills in the city
not running. Republicans blame the
Wilson bill for this industry’s continued
inactivity, but when the company-closed
last August the reason given was over
production. It is believed that every in
dustry in the city will be running in full
by Feb. 1.

LILLIAN LEWIS
Will Give Two Performances Monday—
Ma’.lnee and at Night.
A truly great performance of a splen
did play will ba seen at Nevin’s
on Monday, matinee and at night. Miss
Lillian Lewis in “Credit Lorraine” and
“Good Bye Sweetheart” will be the at
traction. The New Orleans Timfig-Dom
ocrat says: “Miss Lillian Lewis had
every reason to be proud of the magnifi
cent reception accorded her and her
strong play, ’ Credit Lorraine, ’ last
night at the Grand. Notwithstanding
the big counter attractions elsewhere,
the theatre was packed. It was a criti
cal audience, too, and before the first act
was over they stamped their approval of
the play and the star with many mani
festations of pleasure.”
If Miss Lewis can please the fastidious
theatre-goers of the Crescent City she
ought to get a crowded and delighted
house in Rome. There can be no higher
endorsement of any attraction than the
New Orleans Times-Democrat of New
Orleans. Call early for seats.
