THE BEST PLACE
tn the United States to Locate
a City of
A HALF MILLION PEOPLE.
1 " ——
That is What a Prominent
Chattanoogan Says of
the Hill City.
“Rome is one of the best located cities
in the United Spates, in which to locate
a city of a half million people, employed
In manufacture.”
That is a remark made by one of the
most enterprising oitizeos in Chat
tanooga.
▲nd it was made before the chamber
of commerce of that city. The gentle
man was Col. Tomlinson Fort.
The statement came out in a report
read at the annual meeting of the cham
ber of oommeioe made by the committee
on river improvements. .After telling of
the Tennessee river, the report had this
to say of
The Coosa Bl ver.
Chattanooga is a'mott as much inter
ested in the improvement of the Coosa
river as tne people who live upon it.
Under that head are a series of rivers
as follows:
Mobile river, navigable 44 miles.
Alabama river, navigable 312 miles.
Coosa river, navigable 3IS miles.
Oostanaula river, navigable 60 miles.
Coosawattee river, navigable 45 miles.
Total, 776 miles of navigable rivers.
The Coosa at Wetumpka, Ala., is as
large as the Mississippi river is at St.
Paul, Minn. The present project adopted
by the engineering department of the
United States for the improvement re
quires only 14,943,074 to complete it.
This Coosa river improvement system
of rivers connects with the Mobile har
bor which, with the present improve
ments, now in process of construction, is
to be twenty-three to twenty-four feet
over the bar, the equal of that of New
Or eans, or that at the mouth of the
Mississippi.
These two great systems and the great
harbor can be connec ad with our river
by a canal from the mouth of South
Chickamauga Creek, to R >me, Ga. It
has been surveyed by the United Scates
engioeors and pronounced practical. If
it was built, Rome is one of the best
located cities in the United States on
which to build a city of a half million
people, employed in manufactures, and
Chattanooga wou'd become the “head
waters” of the Coosa river.
We ought to ask for this canal and get
it All of which is respectfully sub
mitted. Tomlinson Fobt,
Chairman Committee.
The Canal.
The canal referred to by Col. Fort has
been surveyed, and is to connect the
Coosawattee river with Cbioamauga
creek. It has been much discussed, and
would furnish a continuous water way.

A PITIFUL CASE.
Little Will Goodwyn Left Alone In This
City.
Nearly everybody in Rome remembers
W. A. Goodwyn, or “Billie” Goodwyn,
who was head clerk at the Armstrong
hotel for bo long.
And many remember his 10-year-old
son, Willie, a bright and attractive little
fellow. Before Good wyn left Rome last
summer be brought his mother and son
to stay here with him. After he left
Rome it seems that he happened to mis
fortune, and his mother and Willie were
left here. Since then she has been quite
sick, and for some weeks has been at tbe
Battey hospital. Her mind became af
fected, and a short time ago she was
adjudged insane. In a few days she will
be carried to Milledgeville, and her
grandson will be left alone among
strangers. His father away, his mother
dead, his grandmother in the asylum,
and he a boy of not yet 10 years.
It is a case that cannot fail to excite
pity, and the oonnty commissioners, who
have helped them in the past, are now
debating on what is best to do with the
boy. He is bright and of a happy dis
position, and should be in tbe oare of a
good family. The commiasioners want
him to be let out to the right people,
and will work to this end. Ids a pitiful
case, and the little fellow’s pleasing
manners make it appear espeoi ally to all
who have known him.

Birmingham, Ala, Jan. 16.—John E.
Johnson, a negro, murdered his entire
family at Somerville, Morgan county,
Sunday night, and tried to cover up his
crime by burning the house. His wife
and two children, aged respectively 5 and
8, were the victims.
Johnson first cut their throats and
then saturated the room with oil and set
fire to the house. Only charred portions
of the bodies were found in the debris.
Jealousy and another woman figured in
the case. Johnson is in jail, and is pret
ty sure to be lynched, as excitement
among the negroes is intense. They are
gathering in large numbers to avenge
the horrible crime.
