& PRIMARY
Seems to Suit the Candidates
For Mayor.
ALL THE PEOPLE WANT IT
And Will Probably Have It—lt
Will Eliminate Objection
able Features.
The Tribune’s suggestion that the
candidates for municipal honors submit
their claims to a primary election seems
to be meeting with favor.
That it would eliminate many of the
objectionable features there can be no
doubt, and the candidates seem to en
dorse the idea.
In speaking of it yesterday, Captain
Seay, one of the candidates for mayor,
said: “1 am heartily in favor of a pri
mary election, and if lam not endorsed for
mayor by the primary, I will gladly with
draw and help put in the man who is
thus chosen by the people.”
Mr. John D. Moore, another candidate,
was asked, and seemed to favor the idea.
“I prefer not to speak definitely on the
subject today,” said he, “ror leuons
that are good, but I am inclined to be in
favor of a primary. In a day or two I
will give you a definite answer. It
would certainly elimate many objection
able features.”
Captain Printup, the third candidate,
is heartily in favor of holding a primary.
“It is the very thing,” said he, “. nd you
may quote me as ready and willing to
submit my claims to the people in that
way.”
This is the way the candidates express
themselves, and everybody else heard to
express an opinion wants a primary.
They think it would put the contest oj a
basis that will be for the benefit of all,
and leave out the many disagreeable
features attendant upon elections.
So let’s have a primary—the people
want it and the candidates seem to favor
it. Then Rome will have an elec ion
that will be of a kind the least objec
tionable.
PULLIAM BROUGHT BACK-
He Says He is G >ing to Kscapc Again if
He Can.
Dock Pulliam was brought back again
yesterday by Police officer Jones, and is
now occupying a cell in the jail.
Pulliam, it will be remembered was in
jail for attempted robbery, and escaped
along with Chester Scott. A few days
ago he was captured near Memphis. Al
though his appearance is about that of
the man who wrote “I used your soap
two ye its ago, I have not used any
since,” he hid considerable money, and
paid a lawyer to get him out of the
trouble before Officer Jones arrived.
But it did no good. When seaiched at
the j ail yesterday S2O was found in his
pockets.
Pullia.n says he will escape again, but
Deputy McConnell, who is how acting as
jailer, only laughs at him. Pulliam was
reported to have been shot at the time of
the escape, but says no bu.lets came near
him.
YOU WILL LAUGH
And Enjoy the Evening If You Go to the
Play Monday Night.
Theatre-goers who enjoy a hearty
laugh will receive with satisfaction the
announcement that the famous laughable
faroa-c nnedy, “Skipped by the Light of
the Moon” is to be produced at the opera
house next Monday night.
There is no ques'ion but ’hat this play
is one of the b st of its class, being
bright, witty and full of “go.” The
most solemn-minded of men cannot resist
the temptation to laugh at it. Success
has attended its representation in every
city of impo tance in America for mauy
years, and it is almost certain to attract a
large audience. Seats going fast at
Yeiser’s.
PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS.
Some Announcements by the County
School Commissioner,
I desire to say first all, that the teach
ers will be paid for five months of the
present on the salary play; and that this
amount will ba paid quarterly—that is,
five week’s wok will be paid for on the
31st of March, five weeks on the3oh of
June, five weeks on the 30th of Septi tu
ber, and five weeks on the 31st of De
cember. The county board of education
has decided that each teacher can, if it
suits his patrons, teach the five months
consecutively; beginning to reckon the
time from the first day of January; or
divide the term at his own option, so as

The board has also decided khat the
public schools of the county, outside of
the suburbs of the city of Rome, shad
not be nearer to each other than two
miles - So teachers who havq not already
contracted for schools, must hereby take
notice, and govern themselves accord

The board has further decided that as
all payments must be made on the salary
plan, that no school will be recognized
hereafter, as a public school, with a l.s»
average attendance than fifteen pupi.s
for the whole five months.
I desire to state also, that I will be in
my office until the first of February f r

for the present year. I desire to s.-e
