Qociety.
The put week has been one of the
most brilliant in a social way that Ro
mans hare enjoyed in many a day. The
presence of so many fair visitors seems
to hare had its effect upon all, and the
result has been a happy and | joyous time
to every member of the society set.
And it is not strange that the effect has
been magical. Rome is justly noted for
its beautiful and charming women, and
never have they appeared more so th n
recently. With these have been near a
score of visitors—from New York, from
Virginia, from all parts of Georgia, from
Alabama, from Kentucky, from Tennes
see, and still other states are represented
in the bright galaxy of beauty.
Many of these are noted belles. There
is probably no more popular young lady
in Georgia than Miss Hattie Phinizy,
who has been the guest or Mrs. Yancey.
Miss Leavenworth is one of Virginia’s
most charming daughters, and Miss
Pauline Harris is known all over the
state as one of Georgia’s handsomest
women The Misses Jones, the guests
of the Misses Clark, are captivating
Alabama belles, who have made many
admirers here.
The Misses Albert are at Mr. Hudgins,
and are fine types of Blue Grass beauty.
Miss Whitfield, visiting Mrs. Adkins, is
from Brunswick, and is a pretty blonde.
Then there is Miss Manley, and Miss
Walsh and Miss Werner and Miss Brush,
all attractive young ladies. With all
these and more to act upon the suscepti
bilities of the young gallants, it is per
fectly natural that the past week should
have been brilliant in every way.
The week opened with an attraction at
the opera house that diew out many
couples, and was followed on Thursday
night with the dining of Miss Florence
Fouche. This was a most elegant affair,
as indeed are all of Mias Fouche’s enter
tainments, and the many pretty con
ceits and exquisite details of decoration
and arrangement made a most attractive
display—one, however, that was given an
additional charm by a delicate simplicity.
Among those who were present were
Miss Jones and Miss Augusta Jones, of
Selma; Miss Clark and Miss Carrie
Clark, Miss Annie Graves, Miss Ruth
Norton, Miss Phin’zy, of Augusta; Miss
Leavenworth, of Virginia; Miss Ella
Gaillard, Miss Bessie Sproull. Messrs.
Bawsell, Norton, Hull, George Nixon,
Magill, Graves, R. R. Harris, jr., J. D.
Gwaltney, John Ramey and Sproull
Fouche.

On Wednesday evening a number of
young people were elegantly entertained
by Mr. aad Mrs. Jack King in honor of
Mias Gussie ffones, of Selma. Duplicate
Whist was the order of the evening.
The large house was exquisitely deco
rated with palms and cut fl >wers, and
was brilliantly lighted by electricity.
The dining room was a vision of loveli
ness with its King Arthur table laden
with cut glass, candelabra, artistic em
broidery and rare old china. The re
freshments were of the daintiest, and
the huge punch bowl held within its
crystal depths the secret of good cheer.
Conversation was enlivened by cards
upon which were written veises contain
ing hidden cities. A beautiful souvenir
was fastened to each card. It was cer
tainly one of the most elegant entertain
ments ever given in Rome. The follow
ing were present:
Misses Gussie and Lucy Jones, Rosa
and Carrie Clark, Light Leavenworth,
Hattie Phinizy, Florence Fouehe, Julia
Bayard, Eva Camp, Rena Berry, Mattie
Rowell and Minnie Stafford. Messis.
