" THEtt+SIDE STORY
fl*"! 2 17
Os the Street) RaalwajHfrpublee
as It Iff Told
BY A KNOWING OUTSIDER
Who Seems to Think Mr. Jack
King is on Top in the
Matter.
>
There ie often an ineide story which
does not appear on the surface of things,
and such a story is told of the troubles
over the Rome Street Railway.
The story runneth thus.
That is to say, thus it was told by a
gentleman well acquainted with the par
ties on both sides, and evidently well
posted about the whole matter.
“Doctor Lawrence,” eaid he, “was
sold out by Jack King, who held his in
terest in the street railroad aS security
for a loan of about $20,000. This was
borrowed by Dr. Lawrence last summer
• to complete the road.
“The street railroad was bonded for
SIOO,OOO and stocked for the same
r amount. Jack King owned half the
stock and Dr. Lawrence owned the other
half and a large amount of bonds. He
pnt up something over $20,000 of bonds
and his stock with Jack King for the loan
last summer. The money was furnished
by the Merchants Bank at first, but
during the summer Mr. King raised the
money individually and took the loan off
the bank’s hands.
“During the spring and summer the
’ road did well, earning a considerable
sum above running expenses and interest,
but when winter came on, backed by the
depression, street car traffic fell off heav
ily.
During the fall overtures were made to
Dr. Lawren ?e by a syndicate at a distance
offering to buy his interest in the line,
but the doctor thought the property bad
afiuofu'U'e, and declined to entertain
the proposition. Later, things took a
diffireut turn, and D '. Lawrence’s attor
ney went to K'Ug and said in mbstance,
“the year has been hard, we have both
been disappointed, and now, if I pay y< u
the money without any profit, will you
taker?” To wtrcti Mr. Kng replied
j that he would, and a contract was drawn
up to that .ff c", p’oviding for the pay
ment of she money on D camber Ist.
This date was subs q lentiy extended to
January Is'.. When cue ex tension was
made, King remarked that when a man
asked him to take his m.iuay b-ick with
out profi , he expected to realize prorop -
ly, and if the note was not paid promptly
he wou'd make his money out of the
security.
“On New Years’ dry King was in New
York, and Lawrence telegraphed him to
draw on Scott & Co., of Baltinr re, with
securities attached. King telegraphed
him to wire Scott & Co.’s New York cor
respondent to pay the note there on pre
sentation of securities, and notify him
by wire at his hotel.
“No answer was received, and he wired
• again on Wednesday, substantially to the
same effect, giving trim until the next
day to get the money transferred.
“In the meantime he saw Mr. Bonham,
a wealthy acquaintance, and placed the
bonds, no money having arrived from
Baltimore.
“This is the story as I get it,” said the
gentleman, “and though Dr. Lawrence
has been sold out he got very near the
value of his securities.”
“Wbat became of Dr. Lawrence’s other
bonds?”
"I understand that they are hypothe
cated somewhere, and I believe they
have been sold too.”
“What do you think of the street rail
way ?”
“It may not be earning enough money
to pay the interest on the bonds just now,
but taking the year ’round I think it
. will, and a good deal over. The bonds
and stock are now in the hands of people
who are able to own them, and the prop
erty will increase in earning power as the
■city grows.”
“Who owns the bonds and stock ?”
“Mr. King and Mr. Bonham each own
half the stock. Bonham owns something
over $20,000 of bonds, the banker Bruff
about the same, the Thompson-Houston
people $24,000, the Brett car works some,
Rome parties who advanced money last
summer about $12,500, a d other con
cerns at adistance $12,090 or $13,000.”

a reason why Dr. Pierce’s Pel

Probably because they’re sugar-coated, small I
as grains of mustard seed, therefore, easily ,
swallowed. Most of all—they act in a nat
ural way, and are effective in result. Then,
too, after they’re taken they can’t be felt—so
different from the old-fashioned pills, with
their griping and violence. 1
For indigestion, pain in stomach, oostive
ness and habitual constipation, as well as sick
and bilious headaches, these “Pellets” bring '
euch a lasting cure, that they can be guaran-

The school population, thrt ft to aay,
between the agea of six and eighteen
years in Floyd county is 9,647. That of
the city of Rome is 2,249. . Around the
dity are a number of aubqrb*, comprising
most of the population in the Rome dis
trict outside the city. The school popu
lation of the district is 1518 exclusive of
the suburban towns of North Rome and
East Rome, which have a school popula
tion of 448, making the total school pop
ulation of the Rome district outside of
Rome 1966. O' this there are about 200
beyond the suburbs. The suburbs have
at at least 1750 of the 1966. Add the 1750
of the suburbs to the 2,249 of the city
and you have a school population of 4 000
for the city and suburbs. The ratio of
school population to whole population is
in this region estimated at one to 3 1-3
On this basis the whole population of
Rome and its suburbs is 13,333.
