PREDICTED RISE IN PRICES.
Tbe fall in the prices of all pro
ducts and commodities during the
past twenty years has given rise to
no end of contentions among econo
mists and statisticians and has been
explained in various ways.
From the time of opening the
California mines up to 1870 there
was a greatly increased output of
gold, and its plentitude was accen
tuated by the suspension of specie
payments in this country during the
civil war and in France during the
war with Germany. During the next
ten or fifteen years, on the contrary,
there was a heavy decrease in pro
duction of the precious metal, while
the demand for it was increased by
tbe adoption of the gold standard in
Germany, the resumption of specie
payments by France and the United
States and the accumulation of gold
by Italy, Russia and Austria Hun
gary.
Recently, however, the output of
the precious, metal has been in
creasing. The new South African
gold fields last year yielded about
twenty-six million dollars, the new
Indian mines about three millions
and the new fields of Western Au
stralia about two millions, and
coincident with the development of
these new sources of supply there
will be diminished demand, and the
great military governments cannot
carry their hoarding much farther.
Hence the conclusion that the fall in
prices has ended and an upward
movement is due.—New York Her
ald.
Some of the recent information re
garding the possibilities of the South
African gold fields seems almost
increditable, but it has been fully
substantiated by the facts. The
output of the Witwaters Rand alone
for the month of December, 1893,
according to official returns, amount
ed to 146,357 ounces; at the same
rate the product of the Rand would
be worth nearly if 35,000,000 per
annum. The estimate that the
mines now being worked would
within a fewyeais yield §50,000,000
a year seems to be a conservative
one. These mines, however, form
only a small part of the gold-bearing
district, and and it is likely that in
a few years South Africa will be at
the head of gold-producing coun
tries. When the railroads projected
to connect the gold fields with the
coast shall have been completed a
vast storehouse of treasure will be
opened to the world which cannot be
exhausted in centuries.
Now that Governor Tillman has
decided to appropoiate Darlington’s
share of the profits of its dispensary,
we venture to suggest that the peo
ple of Darlington would do well to
decide not to patronize the dispen
sary under any circumstances. If
all the profits are to go to the State
and county, they should in fairness
come from the State and county.
The citizens of the town should not
support in any way or degree a con
cern that is maintained for their
annoyance and injury.—-News and
Courier.
According to the general report
of the census of England and Wales,
taken in 1891, but which has only
recently been published, the popu
lation of London was found to be
4,211,743, showing an increase upon
the figures of .1881 of 396,199, or
10.4 per cent. A notable fact in
this connection is that during the
same period the increase of popu
lation in the whole of England and
Wales amounted to 11.7 per cent.
This is the first time that such a
phenomenon has presented itself,
London having been found in every
preceding intercensal period to have
gained more in population than the
country at large.
The London Lancet has made an
other list of the foot ball casauities
in England for the seasen of 1893 94.
It reports five sudden deaths, two
concussions of the spine, one con
cussion of the brain, one fracture of
the thigh, sixteen fractures of tbe
leg—some simple and some com
pound, some of one and some of both
bones-.- nine fractures of the clavicle
and two of the arm. At the same
time the Lancet apologizes to its
readers for its imperfect list, and
states that other more or less serious
accidents have occurred which it
has unavoidably omitted to note.
The list is long enough as it stands
to show that prize fighting compares
very favorably with the new “na
ticnal sport,” except as to Ihe gen
eral character of those who take
part in it and those who encourage
it by their presence.
f
The Montgomery Advertiser
says: “The items on which the
Alabama delegation, with the ex
ception of Messrs. Cobb and Clarke,
were not in acco’d with the Wilscn
bill having been retained by a large,
majority, all further opposition on
their part, will end. They have
declared in favor ot the ultimate
passage of the bill whether the
amendments they favor were adopted
or defeated and they will abide their
declarations.” This is very disap
pointing to the Protectionists, but
it is highly creditable to the Ala
bama Congressmen. With so loyal
leaders the Democracy of the State
can not go astray on any issue.—
News and Courier.
Phillip D. Armour, of Chicago,
says of the business outlook: It is
time to begin to hedge on ‘bear’
views. Trade has picked up so
much in the last ten days I feel my
self like hedging on the view of the
situation I took a fortnight ago.
There have been more signs of re
turning confidence this last week
than I have seen for a long time.
The general mercantile trade has
very much more of the old time to it
than I have seen for many a month.
