The Corvette Kearsage Goes
Down on a Reef.
OFFICERS AND CREW SAVED
The Reef on Which Warner Mil
ler and His Party Were
Wrecked.
Washington, Feb. B.—The old Cor
vette Kearsage was wrecked on the
Koncador reef Feb. 2 while enroute from
Port an Prince, Hayti, to Bluefields,
Nicaragua.
The officers and crew were saved.
This news reached the navy department
in a cable message dated Colon and
signed by Lieutenant Brainard, of the
Kearsage, who has reached Colon. The
Kearsage sailed from Port au Prince
Hayti Jan. 30 for Bluefields, Nicaragua.
Immediately on receipt of the cable
gram Secretary Herbert sent a message
to Lieutenant Brainard directing him to
charter a vessel at Colon and proceed at
once to the assistance of the shipwrecked
men. Sometime ago when Warner Mil
ler and officers of the Nicaragua Canal
company were on their way to Nicara
gua they were wrecked on this same reef.
Admiral Stanton is reported to have
been on the Kearsage.
Secretary Herbert has received an an
swer to his cable message sent to Lieu
tenant Brainard at Colon. Lieutenant
Brainard says the steamer City of Para
is available and will proceed to the re
lief of the ship wrecked crew of the
Kearsage.

NORMAL WORK-
The Teachers of the Public Schools Take
a New Start.
The normal work in the Rome public
schools began with January, and two
sessions have been held so far, one in
January, and one this month.
The January normal was attended by
all the teachers, and the following is an
outline of the subjects discussed:
“Fractions,” was the first subject;
Prof. Harris illustrated, proving funda
mental operations. Division by the same
process, was illustrated by Misses Harris
and Omberg. Prof. Harris insisted on
neat and orderly work in fractions. He
instructed the fourth grade to use only
mental fractions as taken from objects.
Miss Towers gave a talk on fraction
forms, and illustrated it by examples.
The same subject was treated by Miss
Roberson, at the blackboard.
The teachers discussed the lives of the
philosophers, Socrates, Plato and Aris
totle. Athenian and Spartan education
were compared, giving decided prefer
ence to the Athenians, who educated the
whole man.
A special normal class was held Feb
ruary Ist, for the teachers in the primary
grades, in which the best methods'of
■ teaching reading, writing and numbers
were discussed.
