every detail carried out after the Chi
nese fashion. The little girl waitresses
were prettily dressed in Chinese cos
tumes; candy rats and Chinese doylies
were given as souvenirs. An excellent
musical programme was carried out, the
striking features being a Chinese chorus,
sung by the little children of the society.
Miss Annie Louise Griswold, Miss Ivy
lyn Duggan, Miss May Rounsaville and
Prof. Thompson also delighted those
present with favorite selections. The
tea was a financial success, $23.75 being
cleared.
GONE TO TEXAS.—Mr. Chas. H.
Cothran left yesterday afternoon via
the E. T. V. & G. R. R. for Denison,
Texas, and will make that place his
home. Denison is in northern Texas,
only a few miles from the line of In

ment. Mr. Cothran will establish a com

while in New Y’ork a few days ago, he
made arrangements for a direct wire
from his office to the cotton and pro

With his large experience in broker
age and commisson, and with his fine

regretted by friends, of whom he has a

nickle or a ten cent piece entitles the
person to enter and spend a most en
joyable evening, of course you can put
in a dollar or a fifty-cent piece, if you
wish. Refreshments will be served
free of charge.
DELIGHTFUL PLAYING. The
press of Trenton, N. .J , in speaking
of ’’After Dark,” Wm. A. Brady’s suc
cessful melodrama, which is to appear
at the opera house, said: ’’After Dark”
was produced at the opera house last
evening to a large audience. The play
was a success Hom the start and the
curtain was raised at the end of each act.
The scenery and scenic effects are beau
tiful and wonderful, and ’’After Dark”
is one of the liveliest plays ever present
ed in Trenton. In the concert scene the
renfied boxing match of Jack Dempsey
and Costigan was doubly encored and
Bcurns ami Donnally brought down the
house with their grotesque acting.
Taken as a whole, the play, which is
full of fine situations, was delightfully
acted, and it was one of the most suc
cessful opening nights ever witnessed in
Trenton.” Manager Nevin respectfully
calls the attention of the public to this
fine and large company of select artists
which is under the management of Mr.
WmA. Brady, one of the most promi
nent and best theatrical managers in
the United States. Mr. Brady never
had any but the best of companies or
plays. This play, ’’After Dark,” is by
Boueicault, the famous actor and play
wright, and is one of his best and most
successful plays. Manager Nevin hopes
the public will appreciate his efforts to
give them the best attractions to be had
and fill the opera house on Monday
night next.

VALENTINE DAY.
Why February 14 Was Made Valentin©
• Day—lts Cuetomes, Etc.
Valentine’s day, the 14th of Febru
ary, is, or more correctly was, celebrated
in England, Scotland and; different
parts of the continent, by a very pecul
iar and amusing custom. Ou the eve
of St. Valentine a number of young
folks —maids and bachelors'} would as
semble together and inesribe upon little
billets, the names of an equal number
of maids and bachelors’ of their ac
quaintance, throw the whole into a re
ceptacle, and draw them' lottery-wise—
care being taken that each should draw
one of the opposite sex, the person thus
drawn becomes one’s valentine of
course, besides having got a valentine
for one’s’self, one became by the uni
versatility of the practice, some other
person’s valentine; but Misson,a learned
traveller, in the early part of the last
century, remarks: The man stuck faster
to the valentine that had fallen to him
than to her to whom he had fallen.
These imaginary engagements as
may readily be supposed, often led to
real ones; because one necessary conse
quence of them was, that for a whole
year, a bachelor remained bound to the
service of his valentine, somewhat after
the fashion of a medieval knight of
romance to his lady love.
At one period it was customary for
both sexes to make each other presents,
but later the obligation seems to have
been restricted to the young men, and
ever since it has remained that way.
The approach of St. Valentine’s day
is now heralded by the appearance of
the vast numbers of missives calculated
for use on this occasion, each generally
consisting of a single sheet of post-paper
on the first page of which is seen some
ridiculous colored caricature of the male
or female figure with a few burlesque
verses below. More rarely, the print
is one of a sentimental kind, such as a
view of Hymen’s altar with a pair un
dergoing initiation into wedded happi
ness before it, while cupid flutters above,
and hearts transfixed with his darts
decorate the corners. Maid servants
and young fellows interchange such
epistles with each other on the 14th of
February, and think the joke amazing
ly good.
The connection with St. Valentine is
purely accidental. In the legends of
the different saints of that name, no
trace of the practice peculiar to the 14th
of February is found. It has been sug
gested that the custom may have de
scended to us from the ancient Romans,
who, duirng the Lupercalia, celebrated
in the months of February, were wont
among other things to put the names of
young women in a box, from which
they were drawn by the young men as
chance directed, and that the Christian
clergy, finding it difficult or impossible
to extripate this pagan practice, gave it
at least a religious aspect, by substitut
ing the names of partiular saints, for
those of the women, and it is certainly
a usage more or less widely ’extended in
the Roman Catholic churh to select
either on St. Valentine’s day as some
other, a patron saint for the year, whose
is termed a valentine, but as it is far
more probable that the custom of choos
ing valentines is a relic of that nation —
religion which was doubtless the primi
tive form of religion in northwestern
Europe, and that is sprung from a rec
ognition of the peculiarity of the season.
About this time of the year the birds
choose their mates, and probably thence
came the custom of the young men and
i maidens, choosing valentines or special
loving friends on that day.
