DISASTROUS CLOUDBURST.
Torrents of Water Carry Destruction in
the Virginia Mountains.
Bristol, Tenn., May 15, —News of a
disastrous cloudburst in the mountains
of West Virginia has just reached here.
Saturday evening, at 6 o’clock, a black
oWud hung over Isom rock, a spur of
Black mountain, six miles from Big
Stone Gap, for a moment and then
etnptied thousands of gallons of water
<?n the watershed, half of which went
lOuth and half north. Houses, barns,
grainaries, cattle, hogs, sheep and horsss
belonging to the mountaineers were de
stroyed. Mrs. John C. Lewis was pre
paring supper when she heard the noise,
too late to escape unhurt. A poplar log
60 feet long, which was but a moment
before a tall tree, shot through the
house, wrecking it.
Mrs. Lewis was pinned to the earth
by the timbers, but was miraculously
saved. Her three children were lying
on the bed and were washed several
yards, but were saved. The torrent of
Water at times rose to a height of 30 feet
and in places was 50 feet jde. On
this side of '' "ountaih everything
\[as washed r a distance of one
mile. Sevr ’ -s of corn and oats
were wash iy. The damage will
amount t, itida of dollars.

R. C. Ross’ Excenters’ Claim Against the
Western Union.
Montgomery, Ala., May 15.—Suit has
been filed in Jackson county, Alabama,
by the executors of the late R. C. Ross,
claiming damages of $20,000 against the
Western Union Telegraph company.
Last December Cashier R. C. Ross, of
the First National bank of Scottsboro,
was shot and killed by the four Skelton
boys at Stevenson for seduction of their
sister, Miss Annie Skelton. All of the
parties were high in social life, Ross
being married and having a family. All
parties lived at Scottsboro.
On the day of the killing, Rose was
in Stevenson, 20 miles away, and his
brother learning that the Skelton boys
had set out to find him, wired Cashier
Ross, so the complainant alleges, of his
danger. Had the message been deliv
ered, the complainant claims, Ross
would have gotten out of the way and
the murder would have been avoided.
The best legal talent in the state will
prosecute the case.
CAFFERY WAS ELECTED.
Blanchard’s Chances Are Good, and Lou
isiana Will Make No Change.
New Orleans, May 15. —Donelson
Caffery, at present senator from Lou
isiana, filling the vacancy caused by the
death of General Gibson, has been
elected for the full term beginning
March 4, 1895, and ending March 4,
1901. Mr. Caffery secured 97 votes,
against 21 received by ex-Senator Jonas.
The legislature will next elect a senator
to fill the Gibson vacancy now occupied
by Caffery until next March, and Caf
fery will certainly be elected. It will
also fill the vacancy caused by the
resignation of Mr. White to fill a posi
tion on the United States supreme
Bench. This vacancy which lasts until
1897, is filled at present by Mr. Blanch
ard.
Congressman Boatner, who was the
leading candidate to succeed White as
United States senator, has abandoned
the fight and withdrawn his name.
This assures the election of Mr. Blanch
ard as senator.

“Advertising is I od I”
SO SAID, but it is true only when you have something to say—not a
mere employment of sapless ijords—a repetition of an oft-told tale.
A syllabled truth: When we advertise we think we have some
thing to say. If we fail to do it, the fault is with us, not the
subject.
Another word about the Flemister goods—the large stock of fine
merchandise recently bought in Griffin from the court officer and
shipped to Rome, and the Parks goods. We confess to a business
policy—all business people must have it. The season of the year
made it our policy to put forward the heavy weight goods first-,
Holding in Reserve the Light Weights
AS LONG as possible 1 Cannot do it longer. These days of frisky
Mercury call out the sheer and light fabrics. The buyers of the
Flemister stock and the Parks stock seem to have had in thought
that the year is about all summer. So large a collection of dress
fabrics
Suitable tor Warm-weather Wear
WAS PROBABLY never seen under any one roof in Rome as we shall
display during the next few weeks in the Parks <fc Co., store-
Every thing known to the countless family of Lawns and Organdies
—almost light enough to float in the air though strong and wear
till-you weary kind, cool, comfortable and colorings, to suit every
fancy, gaining in grace with washing.
This great collection of choice things at cost, exact cost, nothing
above cost—Parks’ cost, Flemister’s cost. Our profit comes from
the discount made in the bulk purchases. It’s a matchless oppor
tunity for the purchase of seasonable goods.
