Sommerville Edition of the
Britannica Complimented
BY MANY LEADING CITIZENS AFTER
Careful Investigation and Com
parison With the Consti
tution Edition.
Since giving the cards appearing in
the Tribune in regard to the Constitu
tion Britannica, Dr. A. J. Battle, Prof.
J.C. Harris and Prof. R. J. Gwaltney
have made a more careful examination
of the two editions and have written the
carets presented below.
black head.m
Card from Dr. Battle.
I recommend the SOMMERVILLE edi
tion of the Enclopedia Britannica as be
ing in my judgment, the MORE valua
ble work of the two now exhibited in
this city. A. J. Battle,
President Shorter College
Card from J. C. Harris, Supt. ;Public
Schools.
A careful comparison of the Constitu
tion and Sommerville editions of the En
cyclopedia Britannica proves that the
latter is an exact reprint of the British
edition, while the former IS NOT. It is
true, also, that I consider the SOMMER
VILLE EDITION A MORE VALUA
BLEJWORK THAN THE CONSTITU
TION EDITION. The maps and plates
in theSommerville are,lJthink better,and
on superior paper, while the Somm er
ville’s indexes are fuller and more ably
edited.]
A further reading of the article on
American Literature, which contains
in only a few lines a reflect'.on on the
south, shows a high appreciation of our
southern authors, and gives to such men
as Pope and Calhoun ample praise. I
recommend the Sommerville edition.
J. C. Harris, Superintendent Rome
Public Schools.
Card from Prof. R* Gwaltney, Principal
Rome Public Schools.
The article given to the agent of gre
edition of the Britannica,
was only in reference to the short arti
cle found on American literature k as ■
cornjftfed W’tU same jq the SQtnmer-;
Ville edition. >Oh comparing the two 1
editions on their respective merits, I;
find the Sommerville edition a superior
book in its general make up. The maps
being superior, and of later date, the
type clearer and free from blurs, the
index much more extensive and com
plete. On a further reading on litera
ture, I find justice done to many of our
southern statesmen, which partly com
pensates for the offensive article in
question.
R. J, Gwaltney, Principal Rome Pub
lic School.
To the Public.
Do not be deceiv ed by misleading ad
vertisements and statements. Do not
give an order or pay any more money
until you have seen the Sommerville
edition. Its price is less than the BO
GUS BRITANNICA adverti ed by the
Constitution, which some of the citizes of
Rome were led to believe to be the gen
uine work. But upon investigation, it
proves to be only a MAKE SHIFT for
the great work. The Sommerville is sold
on easy payments. Call on or send a
postal to,
W. T. Mason, Armstrong Hotel.
I have a couple sets of each for com
parison.

THE ROME LIGHT GUARDS
Held an Enthusiastic Meeting Last
Night.
The Rome Light Guards held an en
thusiastic meeting last night to
prepare for the winter’s work. Since
the encampment at Grffin, where
this company won many praises,
the boys have not been drilling regular
ly. but will begin again, Tuesday
night and. Tuesday night
Last night Capt. Patton
Was met by a large number of the boys,
and being the first regular meeting
they had a lot of reminiscenses of camp
life to go over, after attending to the
business.
Tonight the company will meet
again, and every member is urged to be
present. Col. Usher Thomason, of the
third regiment, will arrive in the city
today, and will call on the boys. Both
of Rome’s companies belong to this reg

elected to that position and wants to
become well acquainted with all under
him. The Light Guards will meet reg
ularly every Tuesday night hereafter,
and expect to be in finer shape than ever
in a few weeks.

MARVELOUS RESULTS,
From a letter written by Rev. J.
Gundeman. of Dimondale, Mich., we
are permitted to make this extract:
“I have no hesitation in recommending
Dr. King's New Discovery, as the re
sults were almost marvelous in the case
of my wife. While I was pastor of the
Baptist church at Rive’s Junction, he
was brought down with pneumonia suc
ceeding lagrippe. Terrible paraxyisms of
coughing would last hours with little
interruption and it seemed as if she
could not survive them. A friend rec
ommended Dr. King’s New Discoery;
it was quick in its work and highly sat
isfactory in results.” Trial bottles free

RAMBLING REMARKS.
Col. John J. Mickle and Mr. A. W.
Futrell were sitting together in an E.
T., V. & G. train yesterday, and in the
coach with them, were fifty or sixty
children, all as quiet as could be.
“That’s a Sunday school picnic, I
guess,” said Futrell “They’re the
quietest, nicest children I ever saw.
They haven’t said a word in half an
hour, and they don’t make a bit of
noise.” Just then Prof. W. O. Connor,
came up.
“What do you think of the children,”
he asked," that’s a big crowd of deaf and
dumb to have together, isnt it? We’re car
rying them out on a little excursion
from Cave Spring.”
Mr. Futrell immediately began look
ing among the little Misses for a wife,
but Col. Mickle said that wouldnt do,
because she talked with her fists.
I understand that Al Burney contin
ueed his conversation .about transfer
licenses yesterday afternoon in the city
clerk’s office Jand he and Mr. Halstead
Smith had quite a pleasant little argu
ment. Something interrupted and pre
vented them finishing it to suit them
selves, but it was very pleasant while it
lasted—so I understand.
Hon. Erwin Price says his wife has
worn No. three shoes ever since he has
known her. The other day he bought
her a new pair, and she tried them on.
They fit perfectly, but she happened to
spy the No. three.
“Take them back,” she cried, “and
get me 4’s I just so everlastingly hate
that third party that I won’t wear No.
3 shoes.”
And she made him bring the fours.
Judge Maddox tells me that Mose
Wright made a splendid speech for dem
ocracy at Livingston last week. Mose
is one of the coming men of the state.
He is sure to take a high stand in the
legislature, and will make a state rep
utation for himself.
Apropos of the legislative! race—if it
c an be called a race—Major Hargrove,
the republican—populist will be badly
left, and I’m glad ot it. But that’s a
good scheme of his for harnessing the
Etowah,and I hope he’ll push it through
to a great, big success.
They are talking of having a chorus
of 10,000 voices to sing at the Cotton
States and Internatonal Exposition, and
if the suggeston is adopted, a sub-class
will be organized tn Rome. This city
can furnish one hundred or more who
will be as the best. Rome con
tains many with sweet and highly cul
tivated voices.

Harper, of Cave Spring; and Misses
Magruder, Carver and O'Neil, of Rome.
The young gentlemen were Messrs.
George Woodruff, Guy Cothran, Claude

Misses Peek and Harris are two of
Cedartown’s most charming young la
