THE GATLING GUN
Os The Third Georgia Regiment Will
Come to Rome
COL- THOMASON IN FAVOR OF IT-
He Spent Yesterday With the Cadet* and
Light Guard*— A Regimental
i : ‘. Band Too.
Col. Usher Thomason spent yeserday
with his military friends in Rome —all
the military boys are his triends.
Those who were not before yesterday
are now.
The Hill City Cadets and The Rome
Light Guards are members of the Third
Georgia regiment A short time ago,
Col. Goodloe Yancey resigned his po
sition, and adjutant Usher Thomason
was promptly elected to fill the vacancy.
Ail of theßome officers voted for him and
they, realize more than ever the wisdom
of their choice. Col. Thomason is a
youbg man, but has for several years
been prominent in all state affairs. He
is member of the GeorgiajlegislatureJfrom
Morgan county. Only last July he re
turned from South America where he
witnessed some thrilling battles between
the rebels and the states, and he re
fused the office of adjutant general of
Hondurous He is an enthusiast on the
subject of military matters, and no man
in the state is better up on such affairs.
As soo n as he was elected colonel he
determined upon a course of action to
make the third regiment the best in
the stateand now he is making calls on
the various companies, confering with
the officers and making the acquaint
ance of the men.
He arrived in the city just before din
ner, yesterday, and Capt. Byrd, of the
Cadets, at once took him out to a bar
becue. In the afternoon Capt. Patton
ami Lieut. Nevin, of the Light Guards,
and Capt. Byrd took him on a carriage
drive over the city. He is delighted
With Rome and say s there’s no prettier
or more hustling city in the country.
Last night Col.Thomason, in full uni
form, paid visits to the Cadets and Light
Guards at their respective armories.
He made friends with all the boys, and
pleased them with his ideas about th.e
upbuilding of the regiment. Some of
his ideas, if carried out, will be of great
benefit to Rome.
‘‘We want a battailion of companies
in this section,” said he, ‘‘and I hope to
see the Marietta or the| Cedartown com -
pany assigned to us. The latter com
pany was given to the fifth, but should
belong to the third The two Rome
companies, with Dalton and Ceaartown
would make a splendid batallion with
the companies near each*other’. They
could easily have a field’day’every three
or four months at one of the cities, to
engage in military sports and have bat
tallion drills.
‘ Another thing [is, we want a Gat
tling gun with the regiment, and I be
lieve Rome is the best point to have it
stationed. I understand Col. Printup
wishes to get up a platoon to work a
machine gun. and I think there will be
no doubt about us’soon having one.
“We also want a third regiment band,
and if we get it, I do not see why Rome
doesn’t stand as good a chance as any
place to get the band located here. In
fact, it seems to me she has the best, i
Rome is a splendid city, and has two [
military companies that reflect credit i
on her ”

STONEMAN’S Sl liIiENDEK.
Bob McArver Tell* of the Yankee’* Caplnm
by General Crew*.
Coosa, Ga., Septeber.il.—Tn Satur
day’s paper I saw a statement that Gen.
Stonemau surrendered to a handfull of
Georgia militia, which, to a man who
was in the fight to the finish, looks like
an erroneous statement. Gen. Stone
man surrendered to Col. Crews, in com
mana of the first brigade of Georgia
cavalyy, composed of the first, second,
third; fourth and sixth regiments.
When Gen. Stoneman started on Iris
famous raid"through Georgia, Martin’s
division of cavalry, composed of the
first Georiga brigade and an Alabama
brigade under command of Gen.lverson
was sent in hot pursuit and the Geor
gia brigade kept close .behind him until
the state troops burned the bridge at
Macon, thereby preventing him from
getting into Macon. Stoneman then
faced about and made a desperate at
tempt to cut his way through Crew’s
Georiga brigade, but the goober grab
ber’s stood firm and Stoneman finally
surrendered to Crew’s. Crew’s fought
his men dismounted and I was the only
mounted man in the fight on our side,
having been ordered in mounted for a
courier, I rode a large mustang pony,
and have an abiding recollection, that
when the minnie balls commenced play
ing upon their harp of a thousand
strings, it seemed to me that was the
tallest horse I ever rode. I carried the
message from Col. Crews to Gen. Iver
son that Stoneman would surrender.
Gen. Stoneman rode the finest mare I
ever saw. She was a dark bay, went
all the gaits and you could change her
gait at full speed by slightly pulling
her mane. Crews thought so much of
ner that he locked her ito a tree every
night, but after the war was over, Stone
man sent down and took her away from
him.
Every old soldier who was on that
raid still retains a tender spot in his
heart for the people of Macon. They
felt so graceful that we had saved the
town, they threw open their doors,to us
and we held high carnival there for
three or four days, and you can risk
your last years boots that those old rebs
were in good condition to enjoy a thing
of that kind. R. B. McArver.

TOO MITCH RAIN.
Mr. Morton Says, is Causing Corn to
Rot.
Mr. Edgar Morton, a prominent young
farmer from down the Coosa, was in the
city yesterday. He inquired if there
was much complaint about corn and
cotton rotting, and stated that in his sec
tion, the crops would be considerably cut
by reason of rot.
“Too much rain is the cause,’’ said
he. “All crops have been looking well,
but at least one out of every ten ears of
corn is now rotting.”
This is 'the 'first report of rot in this
section and it is hardly probable that
the crop will be diminished to great ex
tent.

RATHER A ROAST
Mr. Al Burney, Write* a Salty Card
t-o The Tribune.
Editor Tribune: Friday last, I asked
Clerjf Smith the amount of license Hen
ry Sanford was paying. His reply was
June 17th, ten dollars was paid, and
that was all he could find. I will state
here that he is doing business for which
the city is entitled to SBO instead of $lO,
Sanford being S7O dollars behind. I
thought yesterday I would see how Ma
jor Mullen stood as to amount of his li
cense. I asked Clerk Smith what
amount this man had paid, and his re
ply was. “I am not willing to be an
noyed by answering idle questions and
decline to answer you.”
Business men and tax payers: Does
the question I asked in regard to either
the above parties sound like an idle one,
when it revealed the fact that the first
man was S7O dollars short? Who knows
whether the last man has paid one cent
or not! The clerk has likely forgotten
his oath.
I will state here that I had to make a
case against this tooter to get him to pay
any license at ail.
I have nothing against any living
man, but ask in behalf of tax payers as
well as myself that these voters pay
for [doing business as well as a man
who cannot be handled in the n?xt cam
paign. I fear no legitimate competition
from white or black inthe baggage busi
ness. Truly yours,
A. S. Burney, For Burney Transfer
company.
A considerable argument has been
going on for some days between the
Burney transfer company and the en
tire force of city officials.
It has been said that Mr. Burney has
been making mountains out of mole
hills, and has worried the officials with
matters that never amounted to a row
of pins.
As a result. Mr. Al Burney came up to
the Tribune office last night, and re
quested that the following card be
printed:
