Sheriff Jim Penn, of Chattooga coun
ty, passed through Rome last night en
route to Millegeville.
He was accompanied byMrs. Booker,
of Raccoon .Mills, who was recently ad
judged to be insane.

mire was in Rome yesterday with Sells
Bros’, circus. While there this versatile
genius informed the newspaper men
that Will Meyers the much wanted al
leged Atlanta murderer, came up that
way on the train with him and opposed
him while en route in an innocent game
of cards. You can’t keep Sam down
when it comes to furnishing the boys

The Rome Methodist preachers’ meet

Among the illustrations is one of Mana
ger Ice Cain, who is nick-named Ice
Cream. He is rather well known in
Rome, having spent a week or two in
this city.

Mr. J. A. Bale will have his store,
which is occupied by Mr.C. A. Trevitt,
raised several feet in a few days.

The Charleston Leaves Honolulu.
Honolulu, via San Francisco, Sept.
24.—One American, three German and
three English men-of-war have been in
this harbor lately. The Germans left
a few days ago, and the Charleston de
parted on the fourteenth for the scene
6f the Corean war. The Hyacinth, an
English warship, has just left for a
short cruise.
Strickfadden Denied Bail.
Memphis, Sept. 24.—Judge Cooper, of
the criminal court, delivered an opinion
in the motion for bail made by M.
Strickfadden, under indictment for
murder, growing out of lynching six
negroes Aug. 31 at Millington. Bail
was denied and Strickfadden was or
dered remanded to jail to await trial
for murder.
A Prominent Ohio Generul Dead.
Ashland, Sept. 24.—General Willard
Slocum died Sunday, aged 74. He was
Inspector general of the Thirteenth ar
my corps before and during the siege of
Vicksburg and was breveted brigadier
general. He wm one of the two dele
gatee appointed by Governor Bough to
meet with loyal men of the south in
1866.

Mrs. Pennington is well known in Rome
as Miss Nina Kenna, and has many
friends here.

S. H. Clifford New Cassel, Wis., was
troubled with neuralgia and rheuma
tism, his stomach was disordered, his

Repudiated Their Men.
Richmond, Sept. 24.—The majority
faction of the Republican committee
for this district met here and issued a
manifesto repudiating the nomination
for congress of the convention of the
Southward-Mitchell faction and reading
the latter faction out of the committee.
The manifesto also calls upon General
Mahone to fill-the vacancy in the com
mittee.
