Col, I. D. Ford Telegraphs the

SAYING ROME HID NO AUTHORITY
To Issue Gold Bond?-The Council Answered
That it Has the Power and So
Telegraphs the Ccmpany.
At the meeting of council last night
it was decided to ratify the sale of the
city bonds to the New fork Life In
surance company, in accoidance with
the previous action of council. A
telegram was sent to the company to
that effect.
This action was brought about by
the reading of a telegram to Mr. B. I.
Hughes from the New York Life In
surance company stating that the
company had received a telegram
from City Attorney I. D. Ford saying
that Rome had no authority to issue
gold bonds.
This caused a sensation as Mr. Ford
has no connection with the city gov
ernment.
Council thereupon instructed the
city attorney to wire the company
that Mr. Ford was not connected
in any official capacity with the city
government and further, the city of
Rome did have the authority to issue
gold bonds and that negotiations
should proceed without delay.
The best legal authority obtainable
agrees with the council, audit seems
that Rome has the power to issue
gold bonds.
The cause of the trouble arose from
the fact that Mr. Ford, who is con
nected with the Commercial bank,
and others were dissatisfied with the
action of council in accepting the bid
of the New York Life Insurance Com
pany through Mr. Hughes, who is the
cashier of the Fiist National bank
The bond of city treasurer John M.
Quinn in the sum of $15,000, signed
by I. D. Ford and J. G. Briant was
accepted.
The petition of E T. McGhee and
others, as to sprinkling Second
avenue, was referred to the street
committee with power to contract for
sprinkling either the whole or a part
of the avenue.
The city attorney was authorized
to settle with Dr. F. A Wynn, in the
case of the pending damage suit, by
paying him $25 and costs.
The petition of Mrs. M. A. Nevin, in
regard to building a rock wall at the
cemetery, was referred to the cemetery
committee.
The chief of police was ordered to
enforce the hog ordinance.
The Rome Railroad Company was
requested to construct an outlet for
the sewer work.

POWELL PARDONED.
He Killed Peter Teague Here Two Years
Ago.
AND WAS SENT UP FOR LIFE.
He Is a Negro of Good Reputation, anti
His Pardon IsG-nerally t om
mended. ttffM
Lorenzo Powell has been pardoned.
His . pardon was recommended by
the board last week, and was granted
by Gov. Atkinson last Friday.
Powell reached Rome last Sunday,
and will resume work at the Rome
railroad depot in a few days.
He is a well-known colored citizen
and has many friends among white
and blacks. They are glad that he
is pardoned, and feel that he has suf
fered quite enough for the offense
with which he was charged.
The case will be remembered by
many Romans, most of whom felt that
he should never have been found
guilty. It was on the 7th of January,
1894, that Powell shot and killed
Peter Teague, a well-known negro
hackman. Teague’s reputation was
none of the best. He made several
attempts to influence Powell’s , wife
and she told her husband of these.
He warned Teague and told him
never to attempt such a thing again.
Teague made an even bolder and
stronger attempt, and Powell went to
see him about it. Teague denied the
charge, and went to Powell’s house,
and in the presence of both denied
it, declaring that Powell’s wife lied.
In this dispute Powell shot him, ar.d
Teague died.
Although an able defense was put
up, Powell was found guilty and
sentenced to life imprisonment.
It was only last Saturday week that
Messrs. Vandiver and Ewing began
getting signatures on a petition for
his pardon. The judge, solicitor gen
eral and all of the jurors signed it.
Mr. Albert Ewing went before the
board and the governor and last Fri
day the pardon was granted. It was
a piece of quick and excellent work.
Powell has an excellent reputation,
and his pardon is generally com
mended.
According to a celebrated anat
omist there are upwards of 5.000,000
little glands in the human stomach.
These glands pour out the digestive
juices which dissolve or digest the
food. Indigestion is want of juice,
weakness of glands, need of help to
restore the health of these organs.
The best and most natural help is
that given by Shaker Digestive
Cordial. Natural, because it supplies
the materials needed by the glands
to prepare the digestive juices. Be
cause it strengthens and invigorates
the glands and the stomach, until
they are able to do their work alone.
Shaker Digestive Cordial cures indi
gestion certainly and permanently.
It does so by natural means, and
therein lies the secret of its wonder
ful and unvaried success.

THE BAPTIST MEETINGS
Will Close Tonight—Great Good Has Been
Done.
The series of meetings at the First
Baptist church will close tonight.
For three weeks the series has con
tinued, and the past two weeks Rev.
W. A. Nelson has assisted Dr. Head
den and has preached twice a day.
The result of the meetings has been
a great wave of religious zeal among
many of Rome’s citizens. There were
many accessions to the church and
Sunday night about twenty were
baptized. At the meeting tonight
another opportunity will be given to
those who desire to unite with the
church.
Sunday, large congregations w’ere
present. Sunday night the church
was filled to overflowing, and many
were unable to get in. Mr. Nelson
preached two powerful sermons, that
impressed all hearers.
He will leave this morning for his
Tennessee home, carrying with him
the love and admiration of hundreds
of Romans.
