HINTS ON TEACHING.
The most excellent plan of teach
ing great moral truths is to make the
pupil its own teacher. A pleasant way
of doing this is to require every pupil
to write during the day a sentence ex
pressing a great truth or a moral ob
ligation, and require them to express
it in as concise form as possible. When
the work of the day is through have
the pupils read these sentences to the
school. First have the school to elect
a secretary whose duty will be to
write down the sentences as they are
read, giving the name of the writer.
His term of office could be for one
week. Appoint a committee to select
some ten of the best sentences from
all given through the week and write
them on a large sheet of paper, giving
the author of the different sentences.
This can be tacked on the wall as an
honor for the ones who wrote the
I sentences and for the admiration and
I truth which they contain.
Having the pupils to study out no
ble thoughts has a silent tendency to
make them noble. It makes them
think about what is right and good,
and when one can be influenced to
think he can much more easily be in
fluenced to do what is right and good.
It makes the pupil his own teacher.
The writer or speaker who has the
most influence makes man his own
teacher, so the teacher who does the
most teaching makes the pupil his
own teacher. While these sentences
are being read the teacher can make
a few words of comment about any
one.
The other great benefit of the exer
cise is it is a dieipline for concise
thought. A discipline of this kind is
needed much by pupils as well as all
who write.
The school can be allowed to select
thoughts from others for a while and
then be confined to original thoughts.
This is a pleasant and profitable exer
cise and gives variety to the after
noon monotony.
