I IN PERIL OF THE SEA
r • <
I The Edith Shernlon Narrowly Escapes
K Eight Waterspouts.
' SAYED BY THE SEAMANSHIP OF HER
Captain Two of the Swirling Coln.uua Al-
I must Destroy the Little Vessel—Her
Other Danger?.
> Skilled seamanship saved the British
' barkentine Editl* Sheraton, which ar
rived at New York recently from Maco
ris. Santo Domingo, from being over-
I tyhelmed by gigantic waterspouts while
■ 4 off Cape Hatteras. As it was, the vessel
F narrowly escaped being sent to the bot
tom with all hands.
The Edith Sheraton is a little drab
painted craft of 314 tens, but she is as
handsomely modeled, almost, as a yacht.
She is commanded by Captain Mitchell
and maimed by a crew of five men.
Laden with sugar up to her deck beams,
she left Macoris April 29.
Chief Mute Christian Miller, who
spun the story of her trip, said there
was then only a light breeze from the
southwest and every stitch of canvas
was spread. Favorable breezes fanned
the.vessel’s sails up to the morning of
M May 17, when she was in latitude 34
B "degrees 55 minutes and longitude 74
degrees 44 minutes, or about 20 miles
L south-southeast c.f Cape Hatteras.
' When the mate went on deck at 8 a.
tn. to take charge of the port watch, the
\Jswiud was blowing light from the south,
and the barkentine was running free un
der all sail. Captain Mitchell had just
taken an observation and retired to the
cabin to work out his reckoning.
Overhead the mate saw a clear sky,
and the sun was blistering the deck with
heat, but away to the westward appear
ed a black overhanging mass that speed
ily betokened a squall, as Mate Miller
well knew. Quickly the order was given,
the buntlinesand down hauls were man
ned, and in less than five minutes all
the light sails were furled and the heav
ier ones clewed up. The lower topsail
alone was left spread, and the vessel
, was luffe*d up to meet the expected blast.
The wind began to shift to the west
ward in five minutes, but still held
light, and the vessel lay almost motion
less. Looking again toward the black
m mass of clouds to westward, the mate
F saw what locked like gray fingers of
vapor reaching downw-ard from the
lower edges toward the sea.
“Waterspouts!” was Miller’s mental
ejaculation, and stepping to the com-
I panionway he called Captain Mitchell
on deck. \
One glance showed the experienced
1 skipper what to expect. Already the
I gray fingers. 15 miles away, had grown
I *to enormous columns that reached down
almost to the ocean’s surface. Great
■ spirals of water arose to meet the col
umns, and then eight enormous water
spouts came swirling toward the Edith
, Sheraton.
The formation of the waterspouts had
not taken more than 15 minutes, but the
wind in that time had veered complete
ly to the westward and had freshened
enough to give the vessel steerage way.
All hands were ordered on deck, and
Captain Mitchell took the w-heel and
anxiou / wat< bed the rapidly approach
ing spouts. On they came, gathering
force and volume in their progress, but
still the wind that blew over the bark
entine was little more than a fresh
breeze.
The great whirling columns appeared
to start abreast, of one another, bnt after
traversing ha';', rhe di -tance to ihe ves
sel they appeared in a straggling row,
making a zigzig course that rendered es
cape for the vessel a hard problem. Two
of the great spouts were rushing straight
for the barkentine, but the vessel rapid
ly fell off before the wind, and the
whirling columns passed to starboard of
her, as did four others.
Two more spouts were left to deal
with, and at one time it was almost cer
tain that one or both of these vast bodies
would strike the Sheraton. One of the
spouts towered fully 1,000 feet into the
clouds. At its base, from the deck of the
x- ’ barkentine, the huge spiral appeared
fully 50 fe°t in diapieter, and the top of

tins nr*rmons tunnel ot wafer was at
least 150 feet across, Mate Miller sol
emnly declares.
If this vast mass of brine struck the
vessel, she would be crushed and sent to
the bottom under the weight of a moun
tain of water. The other spout was not
so large, but was big enough to do much
damage, and Mato Miller plucked the
skipper’s arm and said:-
“Is there a gun'on board? I will fire
mto and scatter that spout.”
“Not a firearm on the vessel.’’re
sponded the captain as he grasped the
spokes more firmly.
The big spout was now within 800
yards and traveling, as the others were,
at the rate of 20 knots an hour. They
were urged on by the squall in the
clouds, far above the barkentine, which
still had a fresh breeze. The spouts hiss
ed as they came, as if a million serpents
were entwined about them or a multi
tude of steam valves had been opened at
once.
The distance between the colossal
spout that threatened the Sheraton and
the vessel was rapidly lessening, and
the big column of water was not more
than 500 yards away, when Captain
Mitchell suddenly jammed down the
helm. Heavily laden though she was,
the Edith Sheraton poked her nose in
the wind, and the waterspout rushed by
on the port beam.
At almost the same instant tie small
er spout rushed past within 30 feet of
the starboard bow.
The danger was past. The vast vol
umes.of water were rushing on to the
eastward, the squall had passed over
head and the Edith blxeraton was safe.
In less than 80 minutes the spouts had
broken, one after another, and the sun
came out as brightly as before.
The barkentine ran into a squall the
next day off the Delaware capes, and on
May 19 she lost her topgallant sail and
jib and middle staysail in a squall north
of Barnegat.—New York Journal.

Gentlemen:—l commenced taking P.
P. P. (Prickly Ash, Poke Root and Po
tassium) last fall for erysipelas; my face
was completely covered with the disease;
I took a short course of P. P. P. and it
soon disappeared. This spring I became
very much debilitated and again took
another course, and I am now in good
condition. I consider P. P. P. one of
the best blood preparations on the market,
and for those who are needing a general
tonic for building up the system, im
proving the appetite, I consider it has no
equal. Will say any one who will care to
try P. P, P. will not be disappointed in
its results, and I therefore cheerfully re
commend it.

SHE CAN SPRINT.
An Indian Woman Who Is Said to Be •
Phenomenon.
An interesting tale about sprinting
comes from Michigan. Burdicksville,
Leeiauaw county, Mich., so it is said,
boasis of the fast'st. runner in the state,
a woman too. Thirty years ago Pierre
Crowl, a giant wood •man from Canada,
settle.! on the shores of Glen lake. He
was the finest athlete for miles around.
One of his favorite threncs was ex
pressed so: “Ah tell you. hi y«, ze man
cannot do what s;e laid' e c. -.i do, if she
lif right Ze mare c.i: . u .c.n ze l er.-o,
ze doe zffstag. V.v ■ Il d t z laidee
outrun ze man? Iv.ii j ■■ some
day.” Soon afterward Crowl ; ‘opted
Lola, an Indian papoose. He g:.vo her
constant training Mi running, wrestling
and other athletic accomplishments.
The result was that at 16 she could out
run any man and distance any skater.
Lola is now 19 years old. She has made
100 yards in seconds with perfect
ease.
Her foster father proposes to bring
her cast and have her name entered in
all the games where it is possible to do
so. If Lola comes, and she can run 100
yards in even time, she will make a
sensation, but tales of western sprinters
with wonderful speed are common to
springtime. It is true that Crumm of
lowa caused a good deal of excitement
last year. Yet another tale comes from
the University of Wisconsin.
At Camp Randall, Mhdison, Wis., a
few days ago J. H. Maybury ran 100
yards in 10 seconds and the 220 yards
around a turn in 21 4-5 sec. aids. It is re
ported that young Mr. Maybury, who is
a born runner, will bo entered in the in
tercollegiate championships for the pur
pose of giving Ms-. Barney Wefcrs
something to think abvut. Wefers is re
garded as the sure thing in the sprints,
and if Wisconsin should upset the calcu
lations of the men who figure out the
probable winners, it would indeed be a
surprise party.—New York Evening
Sun.
