Cancer
01 the Face.
Mrs. Laura E. Mims, of Dawson, Ga.,
says: “A. small pimple cf a strawberry
color appeared on my cheek; it soon
began to grow rapidly, notwithstand
ing all efforts to check it. My
teye became terribly
inflamed, and was so
s wollen that for quite
a while I could not
see. The doctors
said I had Cancer of
the most malignant
type, and after ex
hausting their efforts
without doing me
any good, they gave
up the case as hopeless. When in
formed that my father had died from
the same disease, they said 1 must die,
as hereditary Cancer was incurable.
“At this crisis, I was advised to try
S.S.S., and in a short while the Cancer
began to discharge and continued to do
so for three months, then it began to
heal. I continued the medicine a while
longer until the Cancer disappeared en
tirely. This was several years ago and
there has been no return of the disease.”

IN FOREIGN FIELDS.
THE METHOD ST MISSIONARY BISH-
OPS IN ASIA AND AFRICA.
•
Bishop Joyce Starts on a Pious Pilgrim
age Around the World—Picturesque Fea
tures of His Mission —Bishop Hartsell’s
Work In Africa.
The liberal policy on which the Meth
odist church conducts its foreign mission
work was well illustrated at the recent
general conference when one bishop was
appointed for Africa and another assign
ed to the whole of Asia. This means
that in each of these heathen continents
the church has already strength enough
to make the services of a bishop neces
sary. And so two reverend gentlemen,
representing the highest executive body
of the church, will leave civilization
behind and plunge deep into the wilder
ness of strange and distant lands.
Bishop William Joyce, who has been
assigned to Asia, has already started on
what is the longest itinerary ever ac
corded to a bishop of the Methodist
church. He will go clear around the
earth and will penetrate into regions
never before visited by a Methodist of
his official rank.
It is estimated that two years will be
consumed in this globe girdling with a
pious purpose, and during that time
many an unregenerate heathen who
hides his head in remote corners of the
world will see for the first time a real
live bishop. The purpose of the journey
is to organize mission conferences in va
rious parts; of Korea, China and Japan.
Japan will be the first country visited,
and he expects to arrive at Tokyo about
July 15. After a short stay he will take
BISHOP JOYCE.
a steamer for Korea, where his labors
will commence in earnest He will pre
side at a conference in that much dis
turbed land and then travel into north
ern China, where he will call into con
ference the missionaries who labor
among the fiercest of the Mongolian
tribes. Then he will proceed to Fu
chau, where a prosperous missionary
representation will be called in confer
ence. In November Bishop Joyce expects
to be at Shanghai, and at this point will
be begun the most hazardous part of his
trip. He will charter a houseboat and
in it proceed up the Yang-tse for
over 1,000 miles. This will take him
into the wildest part of western China,
where no Methodist bishop has ever
ventured before. Natives will haul the
houseboat up as far as the falls, from
which point the journey will be con
cluded in a novel manner, the bishop
being carried in a chair strapped to the
backs of coolies.
For four months he will sojourn
among the fanatical and barbarous peo
ple who inhabit this remote section of
the Flowery Kingdom, visiting the iso
lated mission stations and listening to
the stories of disaster, suffering and dis
heartening labor which the missionaries
will have to offer. In the early spring
he will return to Japan, where he will
rest during the months of May and June.
On July 1 he will call a conference in
that section and will create a new con
ference in southern Japan, according to
the instructions of the general confer
ence. After that he will start once more
for China arid Korea and in November,
1897, he will start for home by the way
of India, visiting Jerusalem, Rome,
Cairo, Paris and London on the way.
Bishop Hartzell, who has been assign
ed to the African station, has no small
task before him either. He takes the
place of Bishop Taylor and is the only
bishop in the Methodist church regularly
assigned to a foreign post. There are
about 45 mission stations in Africa,
most of them in Liberia and the Kongo
region. To reach them Bishop Hartzell
will have to travel many thousands of
miles into the interior through a coun
try which has proved extremely danger
ous to white men. He estimates that it
will take him about two years to cover
his district, as the means of transporta
tion in that country are rather crude.
Bishop Taylor once owned a small
steamer which could be taken to pieces
and carried around obstructions or from
one river to the other, but at last ac-

counts the boat has been destroyed, and
the new bishop will have to tramp
many miles afoot or depend upon bul
locks, which were often used by his pre
decessor. Bishop Hartzell is a man of
fine physical development and in per
fect health. C. J. Bowden.

WektrnPr Who Improved a Chance
Against W H Vanderbilt.
When the Vanderbilts obtained
control of the Union Pacific railroad,
William H made a trip in a special
car over the branch 'ine known as
the Denver and South Park, which
runs from the capital city to Lead
ville. This is the road of which O.
H. Rothaker once wrote: “The Den
ver and South Park is a narrow
guauge road except where the track
is spread to a broad gauge. ”
While the Vanderoilt car carried a
chef and a ‘well-stocked larder, the
magnate soon after entering the South
Park country elt a longing for a glass
of fresh milk, and when the train
pulled into Como he sent his servant
into the depot hotel to get the desired
article. The servant returned, ac
companied by the hotel proprietor,
Charley Benedict. The latter carried
a glass of milk, refusing to allow any
one but himself the honor of serving
such a distinguished patron.
Vanderbilt quaffed the milk, dto
nounced it excellent and handed Bene
dict a $5 gold piece. The hotel man said
“Thanks,” and started to make his exit.
“I say,” called the railway king,
“don’t I get any change?”
“No, sir.”
“How’s that?”
“Well, you don’t get any; that’s how.”
“Milk is pretty high out here, isn’t
it?”
“Yep.”
“Do you charge everybody $5 for a
glass of milk?’’
“No- some only pay 5 cents.”
“Why do you charge me more than
others?’’
“Because we fellows out here only
get a chance at you once in a life
time,’’and Benedict bowed himself
out of the car. —Chicago Times Her

Confederate Veterans to Meet In the
Historic City.
Richmond, June 25.—The Confederate
Veterans’ re-union here from June 30 to
July 2, will be a grand affair, and an
elaborate program for the entertainment
of the old soldiers has been prepared.
The convention will be called to order
by Gen. John B. Gordon at 10 a. m.,
June 30, at the new auditorium, which
will seat 12,000 people.
Addresses of welcome will be delivered
by Gov. O’Ferrall and Mayor Taylor, and
then the hall will be formally turned
over to the veterans by Gen, Wise.
On the evening of the 30th, a reception
will be tendered Mrs. Jefferson Davis,
Miss Winnie Davis and Mrs. J. A. Hayes
at the White House of the Confederacy,
now the Confederate Museum.
On the third day of the meeting, July
2, the corner stone of the Jefferson Davis
monument will be laid. There will be a
general parade of the military, Masonic,
civic and veteran ojganizations, led by a
band of 1,000 uniformed citizens of Rich
mond, sons and daughters of Confederate
soldiers, with 25,000 men in line on foot
and horseback.
In order to give the veterans sufficient
time to visit the Virginia battlefields, the
Southern Passenger Association, compos
ed of the roads of the South and South
east, has agreed to extend the time limits
of tickets that expire on July 10 to the
25th.

Going into the stateroom one particu

Stooping over to catch his words, the

A Story With a Point.
All the defeated candidates and all
the friends of the defeated candidates
are perfectly delighted with the
ticket., of course, says the Boston
Globe. Their feelings probably very
much resemble those of the tender
foot who ventured into a barroom out
in one of the mining camps once upon
a time, and, walking up to the bar,
was asked what he would take.
“A pousse case, if you please,” re
peated the tenderfoot.
“Young man,” said the barkeeper,
“you’ll take whisky; just ordinary
plain whisky, and you’ll drink it out
of a tin dipper. And you’ll have to
like it, too. ”
And the young man allowed that it
was so.
