Rheumatism
•
Is a blood disease and only a blood reme
dy can cure it. So many people make
the mistake of taking remedies which
at best are only tonics and cannot possi
bly reach their trouble. Mr. Asa Smith,
Greencastle, Indiaha, says: “For years
I have suffered with Sciatic Rheuma
tism, which the best physicians were un
able to relieve. I took many patent
medicines but they did not seem to
reach my trouble. I gradually grew
4 worse until I was un-
able to take my food
or handle myself in
any way, I was abso-
Lffisjjy lutely helpless. Three
bottles of S.S.S. re-
MjltVyMKk lieved me so that I
soon able to move
tny right arm; before
f long I could walk
across the room, and
when I had finished one dozen bottles
was cured completely and am as well as
ever. I now weigh 170.”

MR COOPER RESIGNS
As Pastor of the Baptist Church at Cedar
town.
Rev. W. H. Cooper, D. D., gave his
congregation something of a surprise
Sunday morning, and it was not of the
welcome variety, either.
He tendered his resignation as pastor,
to take effect August Ist, giving as his
only reason a desire to take his family
farther south.
Dr. Cooper is one of the best Baptist
preachers in Georgia—a denomination
famed for its fine preachers. He is an
earnest and able minister, and has been
very successful in his pastorate here.
A number of flattering calls have al
ready been extended to Dr Cooper, and
it is more than likely that he will receive
many others as soon as it is known that
he is open for other engagements.
The news of his resignation is received
with regret, not only by his church but by
the community generally.—Cedartown

Turner-Brantley
Hon. Henry G. Turner sprang a sur
prise upon the democratic nominat
ing convention, when he emphatically
refused a renomination for congress,
and there are people who cannot yet
understand the exalted motive of un-.
selfish patriotism which could induce
him to decline a nomination that
would have been tantamount to an
election.
But it put the convention in no de
lemma. Wiregrass Georgia is a land
of intellectual giants. But there was
one whose towering pre-eminence at
once suggested him to the mind of
every delegate, as the one most fit to
take the place of the retiring states
man. Simultaneously the name of
William G. Brantley was upon every
lip. His unanimous nomination fol
lowed as a natural consequence.
The eyes of the people of south
Georgia have been upon William G.
Brantley for years. Though a young
man he has rapidly developed those
rare qualities of mind and heart
which qualify him as the successor of
the ablest and purest man in Ameri
can politics.—Moultrie Observer.

MRS* YOUNGWIFE’S ECONOMY.
Also Her Views About the Financial
Knov-ledse of Her Husband.
The other day Mrs. Youngwifo came
in to berrow the mucilage. Mrs. Young
wife had written a letter, put her last
stamp on the envelope and then address
ed it wrong.
“I was so provoked,” she said, ‘‘and
1 made up my mind I’d save that stamp
if it took me all the afternoon. I’ve been
at it an hour, but 1 got it off. Don’t you
think I’m economical?”
Soma one suggested that there was a
saying about a penny saved was as good
as two earned, but there was another say
ing about “penny wise, pound foolish.”
“Ahl”saidMrs. Youngwife. ‘‘That’s
my husband I He is always complaining
about the size of our bills. He said to
me this morning: ‘What do you do with
all the coal? Do you eat it?’ I assured
him I didn’t, but what do you think he
does? He comes home Saturday night
with $2 or $3 worth of the mest expen
sive fruit, which spoils before we can
eat it. They make him pay $1 a dozen
for oranges and tell him they are from
Spain. They are no more from Spain
than I am! But so it goes!
“The other day he met an old ac
quaintance down town. They hadn’t
seen each other since we have been mar

“‘Well,’ said the man to my hus

“ ‘Just foir,’ said my husband
“ ‘Cheap?’ asked his friend.
“ ‘Umph! Not exactly!’ said my hus

“ ‘Where is it?’ asked his friend.
“ ‘Up near Sixty-fifth street and

‘ ‘ ‘How much do you pay?’ asked his

“ ‘Well, it costs me about $l5O a

“ ‘Great Scott! Are you crazy?’ said
his friend. ‘Up near Sixty-fifth street

“ ‘l’m married!’ said my husband.

A RIVAL OF EDISON.
fjisa Bertha Lamme the Only Female
Electrical Expert.
Os all the novelties at the Electrical
exhibition in New York perhaps the
one that attracted more attention than
any other-was not an electrical appara
tus at all, but a pretty young woman,
before whom most of the electrical
sharps were doing homage. She was
Miss Bertha G. Lamme of Pittsburg.
It was not because of her beauty, al
though she is vivacious and exception
ally fascinating, but because of her at
tainments, for she is the only woman
electrical engineer in the world. There
were delegates from evgrywheye to the
convention of the National Electrical
association, and all showed an interest
in the young womanfof whom they had
heard so much, but whom few of them
had ever seen.
Miss Lamme is not out of her tweiP
ties by several years. She is connected
With the Westinghouse General Elec
trical company’s Pittsburg works. She
has studied the science ever since she
was a tot, almost. While at school in a
little Pennsylvania town she became
fascinated with the mysteries of elec
tricity, and her parents humored her.
Before she was 18 she had determined
to make electricity her profession.
She has invented many devices that
are in use in Pittsburg. She said that
she could not remain long in New York,
as her business in Pittsburg demanded
her return.
Miss Lamme, like other noted elec
trical experts, notably Edison and Tes
la, who purpose to make their visits to
the exposition on the sly, is very mod
est. They say that they do not want to
be exhibited as part of the show.—New
York Recorder.
Earnings of Golf Professionals.
During the last ten yeArs the number
of golf professionals has probably been
multiplied tenfold. As at every links
the supervision of a greenkeeper is a
matter of prime necessity, the number
of these professionals has grown corre
spondingly. Adding together the income
he derives from ail sources, we may
take it that the respectable professional
on a good links can some times earn as
much as £250 to £3OO a year. A few,
doubtless, make more, and there is at
least one crack “pro” whose income
from all sources can hardly be less than
£6OO a year.—St. James Gazette.
Youthful Discernment.
Johnny was trying to describe to his
mother the lady whom he had met at
Jimmy’s home.
‘ ‘Was she old or young?” asked John
ny’s mamma.
“Well,” said the astute youth, “I
think if s’je's married she’d better be
called midule aged.”—New York Jour
