Capt. A. G. Sharp, the .Southern rep
resentative of the company, arrived yes
terday morning and talked inteiestingly
to a reporter for The Times of the move
ments to be made by the company. He
said:
“Our directors held a meeting at Bos
ton the other d ly, to which I was in
vited. and'a general conference was held
as to what should be done in the South
ern territory. The election was first dis
cussed thoroughly, and the directors
came to the conclusion that they could
treat it as a certainty, and that Bryan
had no show on earth of being elected.
Having treated this pait of the program
as being settled, and, it being the gen
eral sense of ths company that the elec
tion of McKinley and the preservation of
the gold standard were just as certain
now as they would be in November, the
company took up the question of making
improvements in the Southern territory.
‘ ‘They finally agreed to put $275.
000 into improvements here, and to
let the work begins at once. This will
take in a long-diitance line from Chat
tanooga to Atlanta and then from
Atlanta to Augusta, then to the fol
lowing points: Charlotte, Lyr chburg,
Richmond, Washington, Wilmington,
Norfork, Charleston and Savannah.
With thelinecompleted, Chattanooga
can then talk to Chicago, New York
and all of the other points where the
telephone is in use.
“Atlanta gets $30,00 of the fund for
a new switchboard. Then Macon will
have a system of subways built at
considerable eost.
“The improvements will be made
just as soon as the men can possibly
get to the ground. The company is
now buying poles ail over the South,
and will turn loose a lot of money in
the'section.” »■

People Don’t Buy Pianos
For looks alone. If they did, any one of
the pretty piano cases, offered for sale,
with the tin-pan attachment inside, would
do very well and not cost much.
A lew months’ use serves to show the
difference between a good and bad piano
—between a piano carefully made of ex
cellent material and a piano made of
cheap stuff, slapped together anyhow.

The Working Mau’s Friend.
i
We are prepared to show to the public now one of the
most complete and nobbiest lines of
Dry Goods, Dress Goods,
Notions, Boots, Shoes, Hats, Caps and Clothing
Ever shown by any merchant in Rome or North Georgia
We have visited all of the Northern and Eastern markets
and have bought, beyond any doubt, one of the best lines
of goods for the money ever shipped from atfy factory.!
We have a complete line of nice Dress Goods which we!
can save you 20 per cent over anything evei before offered
in Rome.
Our line of Notions is [full up in every capacity. If
you want anything in this line we guarantee we can save
big money by examing outline.
SHOES! SHOES!
THIS IS ONE OF OUR SPECIALTIES
If we can’t save you 20 per cent on your shoes we will
not ask you to buy. We have a few leaders in the best
working man’s shoe on earth-for $1 00, and ladies’dongolas
an I glove grain for 80c, 90c and $1 00, button and lace.
The goods we guarantee can’t be beat.
Gents’ Furnishing Goods!
We do profess to know what we are talking about when
I we say we keep the only line of up-to-date gents’ furnish
-1
■ ing go~ds in this city. Call and examine and you will be
convinced.
Here comes our stronghold —that is
Clothing---Yes, Clothing!
FOR MEN. YOUTHS AND BOYS.
’ his line we we will guarantee none in Rome to equal,
and we cannot be undersold by anyone. We start oar
men’s suits at $2.50 per suit and then we can gi/e you a
suit at any price with’ a 50c. raise till we get you up to
$15.00. Just think, tuits at $2 50, $3, $3.50, $4, $4.50,
$5.00, and so on. Boys’ suits from 60c. to $6, both long
and knee pants, go just the same as men’s.
Here is the Reason
We can sell goods cheaper than any home in Rome:
We carry a bran new line all the time. We don’t carry
any old goods, for goods do not have time to get old with
us. No bankrupt stock ever comes in our store, and for
this reason we keep full up with new guods. Now here is
the key note. We sell everything that is to be sold In the!
civilized world, and for this reason we don’t have te make
it all on any one thing. When you buy from merchants
that only carry certain lines they are compelled to ask
you a larger profit than we are, simply because they have
to make a living out of cne thing, wn re we can depend
on ten thousand and one things out of which to get our
profit. Look into this matter and see if we are not correct
and then call at
