The vest was < f white chiffon trimmed

white gros grain ribbon. The vest
was of dark blue silk with ruffles of
the white ribbon. A plain brown
dress with vest of light yellow silk
with rows of brown soutache braid
was very pretty. The waist was

Girl’s Doub'e Breasted Jacket.
The pleated back which is preferred to

The shape is furthermore desirable on ac

than the tailor made collars and revers-

browns, blues and red being used as al

designs or the indefinite weaving of mot

color. A dark blue jacket with a green
collar covered with rows of blue braid set

single cape with just a collar. When
, made with both capes, the hood may
be joined to the shorter nno, the col-'

garments of different weight are|

separate, while for the coldest days
both are worn. Double faced cloak

garments, a plain color with bright

When plain colors are used the hood
may be brightened by a lining of
plaid or plain silk of a gay color The
edges of the capes are generally

Nathaniel Hawthorne** Daughter Will
Work Among Poor Cancer Sufferers.
Mrs. Rose Hawthorne Lathrop,
daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, has
given up the luxury of her comfortable
home and is living in a squalid tene
ment district of New York’s lower east
side in order that she may devote all
her time and income to alleviating the
sufferings of poor cancer victims.
Early last spring Mrs. Lathrop be
came interested in the poor cancer pa
tients of the city and determined to do
something to help them, or at least offer
some relief. She found that there were
a large number of such sufferers who
had been discharged from the hospitals
as incurables and who were being neg
lected by their relatives and friends.
First she took a course of nursing at a
cancer hospital and learned how the
patients should be treated. Then she
set out to found a home where the in
curables could be near their friends and
at the same time receive kind and skill
ful treatment. She received little eu
couragemefit and no funds.
Then she determined to start a home
on a small scale with her own means,
MRS. ROSE HAWTHORNE LATHROP.
but even this she found to be impossible,
so she decided that the only thing left
for her to do was to live among the peo
ple whom she wished to benefit and pay
them daily visits. In pursuance of this
plan she rented three rooms in a tene
ment district and secured the services
of a friend who is a trained nurse. Re
cently the two women began their noble
work.
“What I can do will necessarily be
but little,” she says; “for my funds are
limited, and I have found no one to
help me. But I hope that when people,
realize what work there is to be done
and how needed it is some one will be
willing to give me the money to start a
home. ”
Mrs. Lathrop is the former wife of
George Parsons Lathrop, the well
known Boston author. She inherited
some of her gifted father’s literary gen
ius and has done some writing herself,
but is interested now in nothing but her
charitable project.
