My Dear Sir:—Only two weeks re

ber election. Every voter should be
williug to make sonic contribution of
time or effort for the success of hi*
party. This is a fight between the
masses and the money power, it is a
contest for tin financial independence
of the United States. Mr. Bryan is
making a campaign that challenges the
admiration of the world. The people

hear him gladly and are everywhere
flocking to his standard. His election
is assured if the friends of free coinage
will only stand united in his support.
Judge Maddox, our nominee for con
gress, is also doing valiant service for
the party. He is speaking every day
and will continue to speak and work
until the last vote is cast. The inter
ests of Bryan aud Maddox are the same.
They stand on the same platform and
are working to the same end. They
have] been tried and we know they
can be trusted. We must
have a president and a congress in
sympathy with each other. This ap
peal is made direct to you for your
help. We must have your active
sympathy and co operation. We are
fighting the aggregated money power
of the world. The republicans are
believed to have the greatest corrup
tion fund ever handled by a political
party in any campaign. You are not
asked for money, but for just a little
contribution o’ time and effort. .Talk
to your neighborsand friendsand use
your best efforts to get them inter
ested in this great contest. U.rge them
to go to the polls and appeal to them
to vote the straight ticket. If Bryan
is worthy of support (and no man can
deny it) surely Maddox is equally so,
for he and Bryan have stood together
on the money question, and if elected
will work to accomplish the same end.
Let us bend otir energies from now
until the campaign, closes tp roll up
the greatest democratic majority ever
given in the Seventh district. I feel
sure you will gladly give your active
help in this great fight. V ictory is in
sight and we can win by vigorous
work. Yours very truly.
W. J. Neel, Chairman.
A SPENDID SUCCESS.
One of the most gratifying evidences
of the opportunities for successful
achievement existing in Rome is the
splendid record of Leonard G. Todd,
a young man whose career borders on
the phenomenal. He has just passed
his twenty first birthday, but has
already established himself in the
business world as a man whose future
is assured beyond any doubt in the
minds of those familiar with his career
and business methods.
On September 15, 1894, Mr. Todd re
moved from his former quarters in the
Mitchell building to a more roomy
aud commodious building at No. 333
Broad street, oue cf the best business
locations in the city. He was forced
to do this in order to accommodate
his rapidly increasing business. He
had started with a small stock and
had built up a trade that older estab
lishmeuts might envy.
For two years lie has averaged
something over $2,009 a month in the
sa e of groceries and country produce,
and he has built up a trade that
should satisfy any retailer in a city
many times the size of Rome. He has
done this by following the most cor
rect business methods and by attract
ing patronage through his geniality
of demeanor, his thorough reliability
and the promptitude with which he
attends to every detail of his rapidly
increasing and very exacting busi
ness.
Associated with him from the begin
ning has been his father, Mr. L. A.
Todd, one of most judicious buyers
and experienced merchants in Rome.
He has been in the grocery business
for a quarter of a century and has
friends all over the country. He
possesses tact, skill and experience,
the three prime requisites of success in
any business, and to him is largely
due the success of the house at the
head of which is his energetic son.
He numbers among his customers
mauy of the very best people in the
city of Rome, and a customer once
secured is a fixture at Todd’s. He
does not permit anybody to go away
from his store dissatisfied if there is
any possible ’ chance to gratify their
desires and he is courteous and kindly
to all comers showing his apprecia'ion
of the public patronage in many ways
calculated to attract patronage.
He carries constantly on hand a full
assortment of the freshest family and
fancy groceries, canned goods, crack
ers, preserves, sauces, spices, and con
diments of ail kinds, and if there is any
thing especially inviting in the way
of fruits and vegetables and country
produca his customers are always
given the benefit of such and he goes
out of his way to fill every • order in a
manner entirely satisfactory.
He has had to employ several salesmen
to keep up with the ran of his business
and there are not many idle moments
spent by him or those in liis employ from
Monday morning till Saturday night such
is the demaud for the nice things always
to be found at Todd’s. He sells at the
very lowest prices and any complaint as
to the quanity or the quality of any pur
chase at his place of business is always
heeded and promptly rectified.
Tn his energy, activity, affability and
geneial business-like facul’ies he is the
very personification of the genp.s of busi
tiess which accounts for the rapidity with
which he lias built up such a wonderful
reputation and such u fl-mi ishing estab
lishment even during the dullest and
hardest times that this city has
ever known In all its history. People
practice economy by buying their gro
ceries from Leonard G. Todd.
Now that business is brightening up
there is no foTeteiling the magnitude to
which his business will grow. His 11 lends
would not be surprised at any time to
find him seeking more commodious quar
ters for accommodation of his growing
business. His success he has richly mer
ited by his methods and he has proven
himself to be a useful and public-spirited
young Roman in contributing to the
wants of the public by selling the best
i-oods at the very closest margin of profit

IS OHT OF THE RACE
Positive News Was Received Here
Last Night
WAS FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE
It Came From a Gentleman in
Calhoun
WHO IS IN A POSITION TO KNOW
It is Not Stated in Whose Favor He Has
Withdrawn But it is Considered
Authentic.
It is stated on good authority that
Col. Rankin has withdrawn from the
congressional contest.
The news was received at democratic
headquarters last night.
It is believed to be authentic and the
gentleman in Calhoun furnishing the im
formation, is thoroughly reliable.
The report was that his card announc
ing his retiring had been placed in the
hands of the printer and that the pres s
would be notified.
It was not stated for whose favor he
had withdrawn but the report that he is
out of the race is believed by the demo
cratic leaders here.
Chaiman Neel feels no uneasiness,how
ever, and says that Judge Maddox is a
winner in spite of any withdrawals as
combinations, by a majority of three to
five thousand votes.
■A no*r Humor.
It was currently reported on the streels
late yesterday afternoon and generally be
lieved that Mr. McGarrity had come

verified as Col. McGarrity was away from

At a meeting of the firemen of the
Citizen's Hook and Ladder company
of the Rome Fire department the fol.
lowing resolutions were passed: 523
With sad hearts indeed we heard
the news on last Sunday morning, the
18th instant, that our highly esteem
ed and dearly beloved fellow-citizen,
Prof. R. J. G waltney, had on the
night before joined the silent majority.
He was a charter member of the
Citizens’ Hook and Ladder company,
and by virtue of his office in the Hook
aud Ladder company was a member
of the Rome Fire department. His
services to the Rome Fire department
were always cheerfully rendered and
characterized by fidelity aud efficiency.
No department ever had a more valu
able officer than he. We recall with
pleasure the many times when we met
together for business and found in
him one who never shirked a duty.
He was a leading spirit among us,
brave aud faithful when duty was to
be done, ami bright and cheerful
when pleasure ruled the hour. Ever
gentle and kind he won friends easily,
and by those sterling qualities of
character which gave him a command
ing influence among us he never
lost a friend when once gained. We
each feel a personal loss in the death
of our beloved friued and sincerely
mourn that we shall enjoy his present e
and counsels no more.
From the sterling character-which
he possessed, saturated with a loving
Christian spirit we know that our loss
is his gain.
Resolved Ist, Tfaat in the death of

cherish with the passing years.
Resolved 2qd, That we recognize in
his death the baud of a kind Provid
ence who doeth all tniugs well and
trust that his sustaining power may
be bestowed in full measure upon bis
bereaved loved ones.
Resolved 3rd, That a page of the
minutes of the Rome Fire department

these resolutions be published and a
