THE OLD SOUTHERN.
Times Are Not What They Used tG be in
N< w York.
A writer in the Baltimore Manufac
ture’s Record says:
There was a time when, if a southern
man was known to be in New York city,
the odds were two to one you would
either find him at the old red-brick
hostelry w r hich once stood on Broadway
and Fourth street known as theNewYork
Hotel, or. at least, find out there where
he was. Wherever he might be “putting
up,’’ it was almost a sure thing that he
would show up at the New York Hotel
“to set who was in town” every day
during his stay.
In course of time the New York
Hotel wm torn down to g ive place to
a big modern building, and since then
there has been no distinctive bead
quarters for Southerners; but if some
enterprising hotel man would set at
work to make his inn today what the
New York Hotel was twenty years

favorite remedy cf increasing
popularity. Always cures
SUCK HEADACHE,
sour stomach, malaria, indiges
tion, torpid liver, constipation
and all bilious diseases.
TUTT’S Liver PILLS
ago, I believe there would be a fortune
in the scheme. The trick of success in
such an undertaking would be simply
to restore somewhere up town the
borne like and hospitable character
istics of the old New York Hotel that
used to be kept down at Fourth 'and
Broadway.
The Southern guest is a little differ
ent from those hailing from other sec
tions. He wants to know the proprietor
and be known by the proprietor, and he
expects the clerk to give him “the glad
baud.” The automaton who stands
behind the counter at many of the big
hotels in the metropolis is not the kind
of chap to make the man from Dixie
feel at home. The truth is, it is al
most impossible to find a hotel clerk iu
this city whose manner is not more or
Jess inhospitable—at least from a South
erner’s point of view. This may be dne
to the fact that the demands upon the
time ot the clerk in charge at tie large
hotels are too numerous and pressing
that he hasn’t time to do anything with
cordiality; but no matter what the cause
may be. the effect is that the Southern
guest is made to feel that he is in a
very frosty atmosphere.
The writer has, during the few
years, been a guest for at least a day
or two nt nearly every hotel on Broad
way between the Battery and Central
Park, hoping at each change to ex
-perienee “that home-like feeling”
—such as every guest always experi
enced at the old Exchange Hotel, for
instance, at Richmond, Va.—but it
was not to be found in the Broadway
hotels, which are too full of people all
in a rush for any one of them to enjoy
a really restful hour.
Something to Know.
It may be worth something to know
that the very best medicine for lestoring
the tired out nervous system to a hea’thy
vigor is Electric Bitters. This medicine
is purely vegetable, acts by giving tone to
the nerve centres in the stomach, gently
stimulates the Liver and Kidneys, and
aids these organs in thowing off impuri
ties in the blood. Electric Bitters im
proves the appetite, aids digestion, and is
pronounced by those who have tried it as
the very best blood purifier and nerve
tonic. Try it. Sold foi 50c or SI.OO per
bottle at D. W. Curry’s drug store.

It is a somewhat singular fact that
the rarest of all noses is that found
where one would naturally expect to
find it—in tbe middle of the face. Tak
ing 100 heads at random, one will not
find, on an average, more than three in
which the bridge of the nose descends
perpendicularly from a straight line
drawn exactly between the eyes.
