The Cartesville Jurist Back From
New York
AND TALKS TO A NEWS REPORTER
The Heads of theßu»ine,a Houses With Few
Exceptions Are Fvr
McKinley.
On his return from New York yes
terday a Cartersville News reporter
interviewed Judge John W. Akin. He
was asked what he thought of the
political outlook.
“Well,” he replied, “It is impossi
ble to judge this election by the ex
perience of former ones. The politi
ciins themselves are at sea. For in
stance I was in New York while the
registration was going on. There was
a great increase in the registration
during the first two days. Both sides
loudly claimed that it was to their
advantage. I visited democratic
headquarters and beard some of the
prominent democrats talk about it.
My opinion is that the leaders on both
sides really don’t know what to make
of the increased registration.”
‘‘How is New York?” he was asked.
“On the surface and judged by or
dinary indications, ” Judge Akin re
plied, “it would seem to be for Mc-
Kinley, Nearly all of the business
men are for him, and of the few not
for him, a majority are probably for
Palmer and Buckner. In practical re
sults this is about the same as being
against Bryan.
“Under the surface, however, there
is more Bryan sentiment and will be
more Bryan votes than a casual ob
server or a reader of New York papers
would suspect. For instance, I talked
with laboring people as often as I
could—street car conductors, shop
girls, etc. If you discover a woman’s
sentiments from her, you are pretty
apt to know how the head will vote.
“Most of them would not express
themselves on the presidential elec
tion. The employes would invariably
reply, ‘the house is for McKinley.’ I
asked a little girl about 14 years old,
whose business it was to wrap up
bundles in one of the big retail stores,
who she was for for president. She
said, ‘the house is for McKinley.’
‘But,’ I said, ‘who are you for?’ She
answered, T am for nobody, but my
papa is for Bryan.’ She added, ‘my
papa has the rheumatism and can’t
work now and we children have ta
work to keep up the family.’ She
told me she got $1 50 a week, and
worked from 7 o’clock in the morning
till 6in the evening. She paid ten
cents a day streetcar fare, which took
60 cents a week and left her 90 cents
for her week’s work. Her papa was
for Bryan, she said, because he was
the poor man’s friend.
“In the same establishment I asked
a young lady about 22 years old, ‘Who
are you for president ? She promptly
replied, ‘Bryan, of course.’ ‘Why?’
I said. ‘Because,’ she replied, ‘he is
for the laboring people. ’ Few of the
street car conductors would talk. In
fact, most of them are too busy to
talk; but I rode on one car one day
about an hour in part of the city
where they had few passengers. I
stood on the back platform and talked
to this conductor when he was not
busy collecting fares. He talked free
ly. He would not say who he was for,
but it was very evident that his sym
pathies were with Bryan. He said he
would lose his job if he talked too
much.

REFORMED BY THE BLACK MARIA.
The Vehicle Against Which So Much Has
Been Written Does Some Good.
For the last several months Macon
ites in general have been vigorously
protesting against the appearance 'of
the open patrol wagon on the streets
of Macon. They seemed to think that
prisoners under arrest should be kept
from public view while being taken
to the station house, and that, there
fore, the black maria should be a
closed vehicle.
But if these advocates of the closed
patrol wagon had heard an old tippler

for the fact that a few months ago I saw
the wagon rolling up the street

trouble was the result of a spree. The
comments that I heard about him made
me resolve that I would never .again get
drunk.

A Story of A ctor Toole.
An English paper vouches for this as
a new story of the actor, Toole; One day
he went into a barber-shop in London
to get shaved, and, finding the barber
out, he determined to have a little fun
before his return. So he took off his coat
put on a thinner one and quietly waited
for a customer. An old gentleman came
in soon. “Shave, sir?” said our pre
tended barber. The old gentleman took
a chair and Toole began to lather, ex
pecting every moment the barber would
appear. Five minutes passed and no bar
ber. The joker began to get desperate
and conceived a bright idea. Putting up
his brush, he quickly changed his coat
again, took bis hat and was about to
quietly slip out behind the gentleman’s
back, when that worthy turned his head
and exclaimed: “Here, sir, arn’t you
going to shave me?” “No, sir!” prompt
ly replied Toole. The .fact is, we only
lather here, sir. They shave four doors
below. ”
Something to Know.
It may be worth something to know
that the very best medicine fbr restoring
the tired out nervous system to a healthy
vigor is Electric Bitters. This medicine
is purely vegetable, acts by giving tone to
the nerve centres in the stomach, gently
stimulates the Liver and Kidneys, and
aids these organs in thowing off impuri
ties in the blood. Electric Bitters im
proves the appetite, mds digestion, aniTis
pronounced by those who have tried it as
the very best blood purifier and nerve
tonic. Try it. Sold foi 50c or SI.OO per

His ‘ Pants” Went Wrong.
He was a very gay young man, and
his sportive inclinations got him into
trouble, says the Philadelphia Record.
One day last week he started away
from home with his traveling bag,
bound for Chicago on business. He
was to leave Broad street station late
that afternoon, he told his mother,
and would be back in three days, at
least. As a matter of fact he had no
intention of going to Chicago at all,
and he had nothing in his grip but a
shirt and a collar. He went to a Broad
street hotel, checked his grip and
went out for a night with the boys.
He returned to his hotel after mid
night in a very befuddled condition.
He got to bed somehow or other, and
when he awoke in the morning he
found there was a bad rent in his
trousers. He called for a messenger
boy and had him take the garment
around to his tailor, whose business
place was nearby. The trousers were
to be mended at once and sent back.
The gay youth remained in bed until
the trousers should be returned. He
waited three hours. Then he grew
worried. He called another boy and
sent him after the garment. The boy
came back with the tailor.- “Why,”
said the latter,' upon being ushered
into his customer’s room, “I didn’t
understand that you were here so I
sent your trousers to your own home
hours ago ” The trousers were final
ly recovered, but the damage had
been done, and now the gay youth’s
mother keeps a close watch over him.
NINE MONTHS IN BED. CURED
24 HOURS.
T. J. Blackmore, of Haller & Blackmore
Pittsburg, Pa., says: “A short time since I
procured a bottle of "Mystic Cure.” It got
me out of the house in twenty-four hours.
I took to my bed with Rheumatism nine
months ago and the “Mystic Cure” is the
only medicine that did any good. I had
five of the best physicians in the city, but
received very little relie. )rom them. I
know that Mystic Cure to be what it is rep
resented and take pleasure n racomending
it to ether sufferers.”
Dreadful Suspense.
A good yarn is to hand frow the wilds
of Australia. Two impecunious Scots
men, traveling north in search of gold,
came upon a saloon. They only had
“saxpence” between them, so they or
dered one “nip o’ whusky. ”
They were hesitating who should
have the first drink, when an “auld”
acquaintance joined them. Pretending
that they had just drank, one of them
handed the newcomer the whisky, re
questing him to join them in a drink.
He drank, and, after a few minutes
of painful and silent suspense , said:
“Now, boys, you’ll have one with
me?”
“Wasna that weel managed, mon?”
said one to his pal afterwards.
"Ay, it was,” said the other solemn
ly; “but it was a dreadfu’ risk!”

Os the Breast.
Mr. A. H. Crausby, of 158 Kerr St.,
Memphis, Tenn., says that his wife
paid no attention to a small lump which
appeared in her breast, but it soon de
veloped into a cancer of the worst type,
and notwithstanding the treatment of
the best physicians, it continued to
spread and grow rapidly, eating two
holes in her breast. The doctors
and though little hope remained, she
begun it, and an improvement was no

when she had taken several bottles it
disappeared entirely, and although sev

the disease has ever returned.
