ASTOR IN THE ENGINE

Shoveling Cr.al.
Louisville, Oct. 26.—John Jacob
Astor came to this city Saturday
evening with a party of Illinois Cen
tral railroad directors. They were on
a tour of inspection. Mr. Astor gave
practical demonstration of the ability
of a millionaire to earn his own liv
ing. He went into the cab, took
charge of the engine and ran the
train from Fulton, Ky., to Horse
Branch, a distance of 175 miles, mak
ing a number of crossings and several
full stops besides.
When he went into'the cab the en
gineer demurred at surrendering the
charge of his engine, although he
knew who Mr. Astor was. The mil
lionaire laughed and said:
“Lend me your cap.”
“Sir?” asked the engineer, with a
look of surprise.
‘’Lend me your cap, I want to run
this engine.
“What!” exclaimed the surprised
engineer.
“I want to run this engine,” de
clared Mr. Astor.
“But you’ll run it off the track,”
said the engineer.
“I never did before,” answered the
millionaire, and with that he took his
place at the front end"of the cab, with
the grimy cap pulled over his eyes
and his hand on the lever.
He handed his hat to the engineer, who
in a fit of absent mindedness placed it on
his head. He found that it fitted him all
Tight.
“I'll take half the money and- trade
places with him,” exclaimed the engineer
to the fireman, under his breath. The fire
man was too busy shoveling coal to
notice this remark. He was kept busy all
the way, too, for the new hand on the lever
was a believer in getting all the speed
there was out-of the engine.
A fifty mile an hour gait about suited
him, and when he could, he ran it up to
sixty. He showed perfect familiarity with
the ponderous machine and, after half an
hour’s running, the real engineer settled
back to take things easy. Mr. Astor slowed
up at the crossings and stopped at the
right points at the stations, with only an
occasional suggestion from his assistants.
In fact, he showed that he had in him
the making of a first -class trainman.
He stayed in the cab three hours and a
half and when he got out at Horse Branch
he looked as though he would have liked
to go the whole way to Louisville if his
friends had been willing. He will be
looked upon with more respect than as a
mere director of the Illinois Central here
after.
Something to Know.
It may be worth something to know
that the very best medicine for restoring
the tired out nervous system to a healthy
Vigor is Electric Bitters. This medicine
is purely vegetable, acts by giving tone to
the nerve centres in the stomach, gently
stimulates the Liver and Kidneys, and
aids these organs in thowing off impuri
ties in the blood. Electric Bitters im
proves the appetite, aids digestion, and is
pronounced by those who have tried it as
the very best blood purifier and* nerve
tonic. Try it. Sold foi 50c or SI.OO per

Recollections of a Compositor Who Worked
on the Broadway Journal.
Fifty years ago I was working as a
compositor in the office in Nassau
street, where Poe’s Broadway Journal
and - the Whig Monthly were printed
•‘The Raven” was first published in
that magazine. William Oland Bourne
was the foreman of the office, while
Mr. Teal, years afterward Mr. Dana's
colaborer in much of his literary
work, and myself occupied adjoining
frames.'
Poe’s desk was in the office, and a
great deal of his writing was done
there. He nearly always appeared
moody and discontented, seldom
speaking to anybody, and very rarely
received a caller. Like Byron, the
world seemed to be his enemy. He
was small in stature, and had the sal
low complexion of the victims of opium.
There is no evidence that he ever used
the drug, but at times he drank deeply
and fiercely. His eyes were fine, large,
lustrous—the orbs of a woman. He was

LEFT A BRIDE OF THREE MONTHS.
Two Men And a Woman Visit Gadsden
Men Leave and Woman Remains.
Gadsden, Ala., October2B—On last
Thursday two men and a woman
came here and put up at a prominent
boarding house on the east side of
town. They claimed to be from
Anniston, Ala., and gave their names
as Cole.
They stayed at the house until the
next dp.y, when the men left, saying
they were going to the Chattanooga
Southern depot to buy tickets for
Chattanooga. One of the men gave
to the lady, whom he claimed as his
wife, the checks to their trunks, say
ing he would send a hack up for her
in a few minutes to take her to the
depot. The lady waited patiently
until after train time, saying her hus
band had probably been left and
would show up at supper time, but
he did not return.
She has been waiting until the hours
lengthened into days, and she still
clings to the hope that he will return.
She says that she has been married
only about three months and knew
very little about her husband. He
was nicely attired and of good ad
dress, while his wife seems to be an
inexperienced country girl.
Cole was last seen on board the
Chattanooga Southern train the
morning he left his wife, headed for
Chattanooga, and was recognized by
Conductor Hammond and his brake
man. They afterwards informed Mrs.
Cole of this fact, but she siill refused
to believe she had been deserted.
She will return to her parents near

The Discovery Saved Bis Life.

avail and given up and told I could
not live. Having Dr. King’s New
Discovery in my store I sent for a

after using three bottles was up and

Wall of Burning Residence Hurts Men Fa
tally end Serions'y.
Gadsden, Ala., October 28.—Fire
was discovered in the three story resi
dence of W. P. Shahan, a merchant of
Attalla, at 7: 30 o’clock this evening.-
The fire department fought the flames
with the limited means at their com
mand, but the fire had gained such head
way it was impossible to stop it, and
the building was totally destroyed.
During the hottest of the fire and
while Walter S. Cox, Fletcher Parrish
andOsoar McDonald were handling a
stream, a portion of the side of the house
fell upon them. Walter Cox was fa
tally injured, both thighs being bro
ken besides internal injuries.
Fletcher Parrish received in
juries, though not fatal. Oscar
McDonald was also injured, but not
seriously. Parrish is the son of Dr.
Parrish, the Methodist minister at
Warrior. The house was insured.
It is the same old story and yet con
stantly recurring that Simmons Liver
Regulator is the best family medicine.

ever used. We think there is no such
medicine as Simmons Liver Regulator.”

A Big Wheat Crop f>r 1897's Needed.
Reports from several of the princi
pal wheat growing sections of the
world show a short crop, and this
indicates much higher prices for the
next crop.
Now is the time for the entire wheat
growing section of the south to put
every acre possible in this great sta
ple crop.
The southern crop is always mar
keted thirty to sixty days before any
other, and in this way can get the
highest market price.
The necessity for a big wheat crop
cannot be emphasized too much. The
recent rise in wheat is due to the
short crops made in India, Russia and
other foreign wheat raising countries'.
It is a crop that comes here in North
Georgia at the dull season of the
year and makes times easier then.

Blood Poison.
Contagious B’ood Poison has been ap
propriately called the curse of mankind.
It is the one disease that physicians can
not cure; their mercurial aud potash
remedies only bottle up the poison in
the system, to surely break forth in a
more virulent form, resulting in a total
wreck of the system.
Mr. Frank B. Martin, a prominent
jeweler at 926 Pensylvania Ave., Wash-

almost eaten away, so that for three
months I was unable to taste any solid
