Wilt Will Ki lauedE rly In Nov.mbsr
and EclipoH All Prnvioua Efforts
In This Line.
Readers of The Tribune have
learued to look forward to each new
and successful aebievment of Route's
great daily. We have issued several
special editions since the present
management has been in charge and
we are happy to say that each and
every one has been an improvement
on its predecessor as has been evinced
by the popular public favor with
which they have been received.
Early in November we intend to issue
a special edition which will eclipse
our previous efforts. Rome is steadily
growing and there is healthy and sub
stantial improvement going on all
over the section of country tributary
to the North Georgia metropolis. Now
is the time to keep our advantages
before the people.
In no other way can this be done
quite so successfully as through the
medium of a widely circulated news
paper like The Tribune. Every edi
tion of a special character that we
have gotten out has gone abroad on
its mission of progress and the results
have been made apparent by the at
tention attracted to this section of
country.
We have endeavored to make every
edition as full and complete as possi
ble, but in this one we want to cover
the whole ground. All that we ask is
the liberal co-operation of the people
for whom we have labored so earnestly
and for whom we expect to continue
to work as long as we control the des
tinies of The Tribune
It will be to the interest of every
business or professional man in North
Georgia and North and East Alabama, i
to secure space in this great issue
The merchant, the manufacturer, the
land owner, the mine operator, the
professional man and all who are in
terested in educational, industrial
work, or emigration work, will be
benefltted by represention in its col
umns.
Not less than ten thousand readers,
in every part of the country, and
especially in the West and Northwest,
will read this great edition and profit
by the information gained from its •
columns. Our solicitors are already
out and will make a thorough canvass
of the country contiguous to Rome I
and we bespeak for them the consider-!
ation which they are entitled to in
promoting this laudable enterprise in
the interest of our city and section.

, Dr. Carr then gave the Burr pistol to
' Mr. Marshall, who subsequently pre
sented it to his brother, Edward C.
Marshall. The latter carried it
tnrough the Mexican war. It was
stolen from him by his body servant,
but through a miracle was located in

before h'S death, gave the pistol to

Thomas F. Marshall, while it was

and carries a two ounce ball. The

looks more like a section of a shotgun

is marked twice with the “X” sign,
which meant in the palmy days of
dueling that the weaaon had done
fatal work.—Washington Post.

Power of Modern Guns.
A calculation of the power of a mod
ern gun brings out the singular fact
that the active life of a 100 ton gun is
just one second. An Italian cannon of
this caliber, with a charge of 550 pounds
of powder and a shot weighing about
2.000 pounds, will give an initial veloc
ity of 523 meters per second. The length
of the time during which the powder
acts is less than one hundredth of a sec
ond, and after 100 shots the cannon is
put out of service.
It is estimated that during the active
period of the work of the powder in the
gun the mean power is greater than
87.000,000 foot pound per hundredth
of a second —say 8,700,000,000 foot
pounds per second. This represents a
power of 12,000.000 kilowatts, or 17,-
000,000 horsepower.—Detroit News.

A Little' Girl’s Riddle.
Several children were asking riddles
the other day, and a bright little girl,
who listened got the idea of what a
riddle was. The next day she went to
her father and said, “There was a blind
and curtains on a pole and the pole fell
and two men laughed.” The father
promptly gave it up when she said,
“Don’t you see the point?” Upon being
answered in the negative she puzzled
her brains for awhile, and said, “Nei
ther do I.” She is now practicing on
riddles that have some meaning in
them.

OUR CARPET COLUMN!
Why is it that we can sell Carpets and
Smyrna Rugs at 50c. on the Dollar?
Eight years ago the McKinley tariff on Carpets and Rugs gave a great stimulus
to these industries in the United States. Sqores of new mills were erected, thousands
of new looms put in to manufacture Carpets and Rugs. The strong competition among
these mills; their increased facilities; their improvements in machinery and manufac
turing; then the Wilson bill, giving us free wool, have all combined to bring the price
dowm to a little more than half the price of a few years ago. Few people realize how
cheaply they can buy a floor covering—we want every one to know it.
