THE SOLID SOUTH
It is Being Broken Up oi Lite
Days?
SO SiYS THE NEW YORK TRIBUNE
But the Savannah News Tak p s in the Edl crl
al and Comments Upon the
P op inion
The New York Tribune says that
one of the most gratifying features of
the campaign is the evident breaking
up of the solid South. It does not
mean by this that McKinley will get
any electoral votes in the South, but
that the "old spirit of sectional anta
gonism, which survived the civil war,
is dead, and that the people of the
Southern states, however they may
vote hereafter, will determine their
course from the ordinary political
considerations which weigh with otner
men, and not from mere blind preju
dice.” This extraordinary deliverance
of the Tribune shows how wholly un
acquainted with the Southern people
that paper is. It assumes that all the
years since the civil war the South has
been controlled in her polities by
"mere blind prejudice,’’ and that this
prejudice against the north has kept
her solid. Nothing is further from
the truth.
We undertake to say that since the
civil war the feeling in the North
against the South has been stronger
than the feeling in the South against
the North. In the present campaign
there have been no bitter speeches by
Southern men in the South against any
class of Northern men, as far as we
know. It there have been such speeches
they have not appeared in the public
prints. But have not the Southern peo
ple been assailed by prominent North
ern men? What about that remarka
ble interview with Mr. Morton, the
secretary of agriculture, which appear
ed in the Washington Post? Mr. Mor
ton is a Northern man and a very prom
inent one. His attacks upon Southern
leaders equalled in sectional bitterness
anything that has appeared in the news
papers in years.
Yes, the South has been solid since
the civil war, but not, as the Tribune
intimate*, because of considerations
similar to those which influence north
ern men to uphold the republican
party. It has been solid* mainly be
cause the interests of the people are
pratically identical. They were com
pelled to stand together to prevent
the republican party from putting
them under negro rule in state and
county affairs. If the Southern peo
ple had been divided men totally un
fit to discharge public duties might
have been placed in places of honor
and trust and sent to the national
legislature to represent them. The
consequence would have been that
pretty much the same state of affairs
that existed during the carpet-bag
period would have prevailed, and the
Southern states, instead of becoming
prosperous, would have remained in
very much the same condition in
which they were when the carpet
baggers were in control.
As a matter of fact the southern peo
ple have determined their course from the
ordinary politicial considerations which
weigh with other men. The chief con
sideration has been the keeping of the
control of the states and counties in the
hands of men having something at stake,
and who could be depended upon to do
their utmost for the upbuilding of their
respective committtes and states, and
for the promotion of the best interests
of the people. We are sure the northern
people are influenced by such ordinary
considerations as these. Therefore, we
do not understand why the Tribune
should take occasion to assert that the
south has been kept solid by "mere blind
prejudice.” —Savannah News.

A DOUBTFUL MAID’S SOLILOQUY.
To ride or not to ride, that is the question—
Whether ’twere better to east aside ail pride
And don the bloomers, appearing thus with
man
In public thoroughfare, his equal now,
And boldly self assertive, challenge all who
pass
To criticise the mannish sport, the loss of girl
ish grace.
Or to cling to petticoats and stay at home.
For of a surety there are joyous parties formed
To go a-pleasuring in which I bear no part.
But. then, to ride, to fall, perchance
To break one’s wheel—aye, there’s the rub—
Or to encounter Wicked brewery carts
Bent on the destruction of the highway’s
plague.
I fear, I tremble. 'Tis grewsome but to think
on it.
Still, what is there left to do since all girls
ridel
I'll do it. I’ll be brave. 'Twas but yester e’en
I saw,
Glancing from my window, who but Tom
Riding with that Smithers girl, forgetting me.
Hush, softly now. I’ll steal away and take a
lesson.
If all goes well, another week will see me by
his side.
Farewell to ancient prejudices. We need them
not.
And thus I say farewell.
