That Light Subject.
Editor Tribune—That light at the
corner of Cemetery street and. Penn
. ington avenue did not show up last
night. It is certainly wonderful about
this light. .Every night the moon
shines it shines; where there is no
moon there is no light. When it rains
we have to go in mud almost shoe
mouth deep across the cemetery hill,
that’s pretty rough; but the worst of
it, we are supposed to have an electric
light to help guide our foot-steps, but
we don’t have it. ame Man.
Grading the Grades. "•
Superintendent Harris, of the Rome
public schools, has adopted a feature
that is used in no other school. It is
termed grading the grades, that is, he
divides each grade into two classes,
putting the more rapidly advancing
pupils into one class and the slower
into another class. By this means
the brighter or more apt pupils are
not held back to the speed made by
the slower pupils. In all other schools
the grades advance no faster than the
slowest pupils, on the principle that
a chain is no stronger than its weaki s’
link. This is a splendid idea of Prof.
Harris and Rome’s school system will
become a pattern for the rest of the
world.

The Ptloe of Wheat.
The wheat market is now exciting
more interest than any other thing in
the commercial world. The anxiously
asked question is—Will it stay up? In
reply it is pointed out as a well ascer
tained fact that Europe is scarce of
wheat and that four of the leading
wheat countries, Argentine, Austra
lia, India and Russia have very little
to spare. If these statements be true
there is every reason to believe that
the price of American wheat will not
only stay up but will go even higher.
Whenever Europe has bad to look to
this country to make good her short
age wheat has gone up often much
higher than it is now. If, therefore, the
pa-t remains a safe criterion by which to
judge of the future, there would appear
to be nothing abnormal about the re
cent advance, nor any serious impro
priety in anticipating even higher figures
than those touched last week.
Alieady large profits have been real
ized, and it is estimated that on the pres
ent supply the profit by the advanced
price will be near unto $60,000,000. It
is said that a larger proportion of this
year's wheat is still in the hands of farm
ers than in any season for many years. It
is to be hoped that this Is so.

ONLY’THREE DAYS
Every Democrat Should Get Down to
Business
AND HELP TO MAKE A LANDSLIDE
Let Every Democrat Do His Duty and Do
It Well, aud Let ItepabUcauisiu
Go lotho Wall.
Only three more days until the great
campaign of ‘96 will be a thing of the
past.
Every democrat should get down to
business with a “vim” and put on the
finishing touches and make Hon. John
W. Maddox’s majority the largest that
he has ever received.
Chairman W. J. Neel was very busy
yesterday sending out circulars, and says
everything is moving along nicely.
The.popplists and republicans continue
to send out anonymous letters, but they
will have little or no effect on Congress
man Maddox’s majority.
Every democrat should appoint him
self a committee of one and work for the
interest of the whole ticket.
Congressman Maddox continues to
make, his rounds. Yesterday he spoke
in Cave Spring and also at Livingston.
He will speak at Coosa Mill this morn
ing at 10 o’clock, and at the Flatwdbds
Court Ground tonight. Large crowds
greet him everywhere, and he will be re
turned to congress by an overwhelming
majority.
On Monday night Judge Maddox
will speak here especially to the la
boring people, and his speech will
be one of the strongest of the cam
paign.
Hon. J. Lindsay Johnson ac
companied Judge Maddox to Cave
Spring, Livington and Coosa, and
will join heartily in urging forward
the cause of democracy.
Everything depends on the efforts
of the democratic workers between
now and next Tuesday, and every
democrat in the district should do his
full duty between now and the elec
tion day.

A Beautiful Sight at th® Pub’ic Schools
Yesterday Morning.
Through the kindness of Prof. J. C,
Harris, superintendent of Rome’s
splendid system of public schools, a
representative of the Tribune was
shown through the various grades
yesterday morning, it being Autumn
Day. Every room was beautifully de
corated with fall flowers and autumn
leaves in every shade from the pale
pn- lev to the deep red of oak, chry
santhemums of every variety filled
each nook and desk. Great strings of
acorns and red haws served to fringe
the teachers’ rostrums. This custom
is a happy one and cultivatesjlove for
the beautiful —a child cannot learn it
too early. Rome has great reasons to
be proud of the teachers and officials
of her school system. They are pre
paring the bulwark of the Republic
who will be the glory and admiration
of centuries to come.

A GOOD MINSTREL
Was Barlow Brothers Here ILast Night at
the Grand.
Barlow Brother’s Minstrel, under the
management of M. A. Mosely, played
here last night to a good house, but they
d served much more.
As a minstrel performance it is so far
ahead of lhe Al Field aggregation seen
here this year that there is no mention
ing them in the same breath.
One of the particularly bright features
is Harry Ward, the monoguist, who is
away up in his class and one of the best
ever seen here.
Will Mack who, after many years, has
brought back upon the stage the .old
time negro was heartily received, and his
singing of that old song, “I’m Going
Back to Dixie,” brought tears to the eyes
of his auditors. Harry Ward’s song, with
the airs from the gallery by Master Sam“-
son, was one of the prettiest parts of the
program. The ballads were particularly
good and last but not least Zella was the
most wonderful contortionist ever seen in
Augusta. All around Barlow Brother’s
Ministrcls is the best of its kind here in
many years,—Augusta Chronicle.
