BRETHREN DISAGREE
DISTINGUISHED METHODIST DIVINE
ACCUSED OF HERESY.
Bev. Dr. John D. Kobins Writes a Book That
Stirs Vp th© Critics, and Now His Or
thodoxy la Called In Question —Heresy
Trial In Prospect.
There is an exciting heresy hunt on
in the Methodist Church South. Rev.
Dr. John B. Robins of Atlanta is the ac
cused. He is the pastor of one of the
leading churches of that city and has
occupied a pulpit there for a number of
years. In Atlanta he is immensely pop
ular, and the people who are crying
"Heretic!” on his trail most enthusias
tically are men who for the most part
are not acquainted with him personally.
Dr. Robins, besides being a popular
preacher, is a deep theologian and a vig
orous writer on theological subjects.
Dr. Robins has written a book,
though, which has raised a storm of op
position, and, although he has been in
dorsed by a few leading ministers, there
are a number of other prominent Meth
odists who are actively denouncing him
in both the religious and secular press.
It is likely that this oppositiqn will de
velop into specific charges at the next
conference.
The book about which so much talk
is being made is one entitled'‘The Fam
ily; A Necessity of Civilization.” The
lay reader, unskilled in theological tech
nicalities, might read this book and be
vastly surprised to hear it denounced as
heretical, unsound and dangerous. Dr.
Robins says it was not meant as a theo
logical treatise, the main idea being to
show that the family was a necessary
foundation to civilized life.
But in pursuing the thread of his dis
course Dr. Robins made some side ex
cursions into orthodoxy and shattered a
few time stained theories which theo
logians of the older school have long
held sacred. It was these digressions
which have made all the trouble for the
author of the book. Some leading min-

isters and laymen of the denomination
have written replies to Dr. Robins, and
he has even been asked to leave his
pulpit.
The chief fault found with Dr. Rob
ins is that his views on orignal sin, re
generation and conversion are pro
nounced unsound. Dr. Robins does not
believe that babies are totally depraved ;
he does not believe that children need
to be converted, and his belief in original
sin is a somewhat modified one to that
held by some Methodists. He is charged
with directly opposing the cardinal prin
ciples of the faith and with propounding
a dangerous doctrine.
Among his critics Dr. Clement C.
Carey and Rev. 11. P. Myers have been
the most severe. The former wrote a
most caustic criticism of the book for
the Tennessee Methodist in which ho
said:
"If there is anything in our doctrines
jf inherited depravity as set forth in
the seventh article of religion on ‘orig
inal sin’ snd the baptismal service for
infants, then this book contains the
rankest heresy and is full of strange and
erroneous doctrines.
"Feeble and not farreaching.though
my voice be, I protest against such
things and warn the Methodist church
against books and public utterances of
preachers which forth views of ‘orig
inal sin’ and regeneration as set forth
in the took just mentioned. I protest
further against Methodist preachers,
under solemn vows of ordination ‘to
banish and drive away all erroneous
and strange doctrines,’ who publicly or
privately disseminate doctrines contrary
to our articles of religion, whether in
the pulpit or in books ”
Dr. Robins is reserving most of his
ammunition until all the criticisms are
in, but he has already sent out a brief
reply to some of his critics. He asserts
in the first place that he believes the ar
ticles of religion of the Methodist
church and would not change a single
one of them. He also declares that his

Dr. Robins’ friends have also come
forward and given a hearty indorse
ment. Among them is Dr. I. S. Hop
kins, who says, “I know nothing of the
merits of the discussion, but I would
rather take John Robins’ opinion on
theology than that of any of his critics. ”
Dr. Robins was born in Putnam coun
ty, Ga., Sept. 21, 1851. His parents
were of Scotch descent and of religious
inclination, and he was brought up in
an atmosphere of Christianity and the
ology. Nevertheless, after he had been
graduated from Emory college, he de
termined to take up law as a profession,
and in 1878 he was admitted to the bar
at Greensboro, Ga. As a lawyer he was
rapidly winning success when he yield
ed to a strong “call” to the ministry.
He became a preacher of the gospel in
1877 and fora number of years occu
pied obscure pulpits. Finally, in 1891,
he was assigned to the First Methodist
church of Atlanta and has been in that
city ever since. S. P. Schenck.
Something to Know.
It may be worth something to know
that the very best medicine for restoring
the tired out nervous system to a healthy
vigor is Electric Bitters. This medicine
is purely vegetable, acts by giving tone to
the nerve centres m the stomach, gently
stimulates the Liver and Kidneys, and
aids these organs in thowing off impuri
ties in the blood. Electric Bitters im
proves the appetite, aids digestion, and is
pronounced by those who have tried it as
the very best blood purifier and nerve
tonic. Try it. Sold foi 50c or SI.OO per

POSITIVELY INSULTING.
The Hint Given to a Seventh Daughter of
a Seventh Daughter.
A lawyer who was engaged in settling
np the affairs of an estate was some
what worried over the loss of certain
letters and papers.
The deceased had been a careless per
son, and he had mislaid several docu
ments that were of importance to his
heirs. Having been called away from
this earth on a hasty summons, he had
not given the lawyer any instructions
beforehand.
The lawyer had a helpful friend who
believed in clairvoyancy and second
sight. This friend went to a woman
who was the seventh daughter of a sev
enth daughter, and who could read the
stars at sight, and told her of the law
yers search for the papers.
The clairvoyant or fortune teller, or
whatever she may have been, went to
see the lawyer.
The lawyer was skeptical. I really
believe I can find these papers for you, ”
said she. ‘ ‘lf you care to employ me I
shall at least endeavor to find them. A
few weeks ago I found a lost will for a
family on the north side.”
"You really think you can find these
papers?”
“I am quite sure of it. ”
"You go ahead and find them, and
I’ll pay you liberally.”
‘‘But I must receive every assistance
from you and the relatives of the de
parted. I must be taken to his home and
put in sympathy with his former sur
roundings. ”
‘ ‘Not much. I’ll not go to all that
trouble. I think you’re a fraud. ”
The woman gave him a stony stare
and swept out of the room.
About five minutes later she re-enter
ed the office. She appeared to be agi
tated. "Excuse me for coming back,”
she said, "but did I leave a small black
bag in here? I wouldn’t lose it for the
world.”
"1 haven”t seen it. You don’t re
member where you left it?”
“I can’t imagine. ”
"That hadn’t ought to worry you. If
you can find papers that have been miss
ing six months, you hadn’t ought to
have any difficulty in finding a handbag
that was lost ten minutes ago.”
‘‘You arc positively insulting,” said
the seventh daughter of the seventh
daughter, and then she left him forever.

REV. DR. CONATY.
Probable Successor to Bishop Keane M

Rev. Dr. T. J. Conaty, D. D., who

and head of the Catholic summer school

churc h and has been an ardent support
er of the parochial schools. His appoint
ment will mean that the liberal Catho
lics, of whom Archbishop Ireland is a
representative, have been ousted from
tho control of the university.
Dr. Conaty was born in Ireland about
40 years ago, but came to this country
as a youth, was educated here and is
an American citizen. He is a graduate
of the College of the Holy Cross, con
ducted in Worcester by the Jesuits, and
spent eight years in- the Trey seminary
of tho archdiocese of New York. Since
then he has been rector of his church in
Worcester and has been the head of the
Catholic summer school on Lake Cham
plain for several years.
Dr. Conaty publishes a weekly paper
called The Catholic School Gazette, in
which he expounds his ideas on the
parochial school question with much
force and frequency. He is a man of
much learning, and in 1889 was given
the degree of doctor of divinity by the
Jesuit university of Georgetown. He is
a deep thinker and is well fitted to take
the important position as head of the
university. While a strong and active
conservative, whose frank announce
ments of his principles have occasional
ly gained for him the dislike of his op
ponents, he has always been on most
friendly terms with Bishop Keane, and
the latter has frequently lectured at his
school. Dr. Conaty has also been active
in the cause of temperance.
The other two candidates are Very
Rev. Dr. Mooney, vicar general of New
York, and the Rev. Dr. Riordan, who
has been engaged in mission work at
the Church of St. Elizabeth of Washing
ton for about 20 years.

EATEN ALIVE.
A Fish That Watches Its Own Demolition
Is a Japanese Delicacy.
The most dainty dish to the Japanese
epicure is none other than a living fish.
This horrible delicacy is served as fol
lows : Resting on a large dish is a mat
formed’Of rounds of glass held together
by plaited threads, on which is a living
fish with gills and mouth moving regu
larly. At its back rises a bank of white
shreds resembling damp isinglass, but
in reality a colorless seaweed, while the
fish itself rests on damp green algae. In
front is a pile of small slices of sawfish
garnished with a radiating tuft of varie
gated bamboo leaves. A portion of the
raw fish from the pile in front of the
living victim is now placed on a saucer
and passed to one guest, and so on with
the rest till the pile is consumed. Then
the carver raises the skin (which has
been already loosened) of the living fish,
and proceeds to take slice after slice from
the upper part. The creature has been
carved while still alive, the pile of flesh
first served consisting of the lower half
of the body. This has been done with
such consummate skill that no vital
part has been touched. The heart, the
liver, the gills and the stomach are left
intact, while the damp seaweed on
which the flesh rests suffices to keep the
lungs in action. The miserable victim
looks on with lustrous eyes while its
own body is consumed, probably the
only instance of a living creature assist
ing as a spectator at its own entomb
ment.—Cincinnati Enquirer.
