JOHN 'MAN’S DEATH
Much Regret Expressed in Rome Over
the Event
JUDGE SHKOPSHIRE KNEW HIM WELL
Came With Father’s Funily on a Flat
Boat Down the Erencn
Br >a<l.
The news’of the death of Mr. John
Ininan caused much regret around
Rome yesterday.
Judge W. M. Shropshire, of this
city, knew him Wei) and he and S. M.
D. Thomas, of Dalton, came with the
elder Inman’s family down the French
Broad river long before the war.
The Inman’s had all their effects
loaded on a flatboat and came on
down through Tennessee and settled
at Ringgold. Ga.
Then young John Inipan first began
his career as a clerk in his father’s
bank. So efficient did he prove him
self that at the age of sixteen he was
made assistant cashier. He resigned
this position before he was eighteen
years of age to enlist in the confeder
ate army with the First regiment of
Tennessee cavalry, in which he served
faithfully to the close of the war, and
a brother-in-law of Mr. R. G. Cross
was his comrade.
On returning home from the war he
found poverty where he had left wealth
and widespread devastation in place
of prosperity and plenty. His fathers’
fortune had been turned topsy-turvy
and the problem of life through the
violence of war had become serious
indeed. The impoverished south*
offered no encouragement and Mr. In
man, with nothing in his pocket ex
cept a soldier parole, went to New
York to make a new start in life.
From that day began his career of
usefulness and success as one of the
best known business men in the
country.
He secured a clerkship in a cotton
house in New York'soon after he ar
rived there in September, J 865. Two
years later he organized the now in
ternationally well-known house of
Inman, Swann & Co., cotton commis
sion merchants. He has been the
presiding genius over the destinies of
that firm from th«? time of its organiz
ation until the present.
Mr. Inman was born October 23, 1844,
in Jefferson county, Tennessee, and is the
second son of Shadrack W. and Jane
Martin Inman. His father was of Eng
lish lineage and his mother of Scotch-
Irish decent. From this sturdy ancestry
John Inman inherited robust physique
and unsual brain power. His father was
a rich planter in Tennesee before the war
besides being a banker of pronounced
success. The family has been stanch
Presbyterians through severaFgenerations
and John Inman himself was a_consistent
member of that denomination.
Mr. Inman’s scholastic education ended
with the completion of the accademic
course. He declined to enter college
lege because of impatience to begin his
business life. He proved to be one of
the most successful financiers of his time
and none rejoiced in his success more
than his old frinds in Rome.
Mr. Inman ten or twelve years ago
turned his attention to railroad interests
of the south and rapidly went to a fore
most position in the management of
southern railroads. Os late, however, he
almost completely withdrew from that
field of open.tion in order to enjoy ..more
leisure than grave official responsibilities
would permit. He has for several ’years
been a member of the rapid transit com
mission of New York city. He was one
of the original members of the board and
is regarded as one of the most influential
men connected with that great enterprise.
He was identified with the management
of several prominent financial institutions
of New York.
He was by no means a club man,
but held membership in several of the
leading clubs, among them being the
Manhattan and Metropolitan, only
because his prominent position in the
metropolis necessitated his connection
with one or two of these organizations.
His home was a far greater delight to
him than all the clubs of the island
of Manhattan.
He has racently built a magnificent
house at No. 874 Fifth avenue, and its
impressive exterior is only a hint of its
luxurious interior.
Few men weie better known among
the cotton men of the world than Mr.
Inman. He seldom appeared person
ally on the floor of the New York Cot
ton Exchange, conducting his busi
ness almost entirely through his brok
ers. Occasionally, perhaps six or seven
times during the season, he person
ally appeared on the floor of the ex
change to watch the fluctuations of
the market. On these occasions his
presence was always noted by the
New York newspapers and commented

nothing is names.
Some Recollections and Observations of
Uncle Joab.
It is said that there lives in the
mountains of North Georgia one of
the meanest men that is any where to
be found. Some people attribute it
to his name while others think that
names have nothing to do with it. I
will give the name and let my readers
judge for themselves. Here it is:
“Moses Aaron Francis Mariod General
George Washington Stonewall Jack
son Robert E. Lee Alexander Stephens
Henry Grady Bennie Abney Conway
Copenhagan Nicademus Dalmantha
Obadiah Esqr. A Hog Thief and a
Liar.” Now, if any one thinks that
big long names have anything to do
with it they should not- name any of
their children any such names. Tom,
Dick, Joe, Sam and John say they
have. Pat and Mike say faith and
the have.
What a difference in names now
and when Georgia was first settled?
The first jury that was drawn in
Georgia had but one man on it who
had a double name. Draw a jury
now and eleven out of twelve will
have double names. Though I do
not think the people any worse now
than then. Some arguey the are,
and getting more so. If there is mon
crime it is because there is more pop
ulation. And now we have much
greater facilities to hear of all that
happens all over the world.—Calhoun
Times.
If there is any one thing that needs
to be purified, it is politics, so the re
former says, and many agree thereto.
But blood tells, and as a blood puri
fier and liver corrector Simmons Liver
Regulator is the best medicine. “I
use it in perference to any other.”—
So wrote Mr, S M. Hysell, of Middle
port, Ohio. And Dr. D. S. Russell, of
Farmville, Va., writes, “It fulfills all
you promise for it.

Origin of Word “Money.” \
The word money owes its very exist
ence to the Latin goddess Juno Moucta,
in whose great temple was struck the
first Roman coinage. The florin took its
name from Florence, in which city it
was struck about the thirteenth century.
Ducats were specially struck for circu
•lation in the duchy of Apulia in 1140
and bore a beautiful inscription.
Mcplaho is the name of a tribo of
Mohammedans which forms a fourth
part of the population of the Malabar
coast of south India. They are supposed
to be descendants of Moors and Arabians
who established themselves on the coast
aud intermarried with native women.
Some years ago there were about 600,-
000 of them.
The flags to be hoisted at one time in
signaling at sea never exceed four. It is
an interesting arithmetical fact that,
with 18 various colored flags, and never
more than 4 at a time, no fewer than
78,642 signals can be given.

Time proves the worth of every

There is nothing more susceptible
to time than a piano. The Kranieh &
