WRITTEN AT RANDOM.
The following is printed in the last
issue of the Calhoun Times and signed
“Only A Tramp.” It seems to me to be a
very pathetic little skit:
The evening shadows were creeping up
above the valley, stealthily, silently, cast
ing a sOMtbre haze o’er the sleeping land
scape.
The wind sighed mournfully through
the pines and the night owl’s weird and
solemn notes echoed upon the mountain.
The tinkle of the sheep bell mingled
with the wild song of the whipprorwiSl
while the lowing kine wended their way
slowly through the little meadow and
splashed lazily in the babbling brook.
The moon stole above the treetops and
cast her mellow rays upon a snow white
vine thatched cottage.
In the old-fashioned fireplace the blaz
ing hickory logs crackled cheerily. Be
side the besrthstoine sat a stalwart man,
brawny aud Rugged honesty
shone in every feature of his face. His
hearty voice and easy manner told more
plainly than words that he possessed a
clear conscience and a happy home. Upon
his knee sat a rosy-cheeked cbtrub with
blue eyes and golden curls, while his
wife with busy fingers, was knitting
stockings for the little tot, ever and anon
cisting a leving glance towrds husband
and child.
The scribbler of these lines stopped by
the roadside, weary from a fatiguing
journey and looked longingly upon the
peaceful scene, thinking: “What of ell
the strife and turmoil of our ambitious
life; wbat of wealth and glory.” Slowly
reigning my steed again into the road
the road and casting a longing look back
wards I was forced to the conclusion that
the mounatineer, in his humble home,
with few wants and those easily supplied
free from the heartburnings and jealousies
of the world, had chosen wisely.
I deseaded into the valley, the shadows
deepened around me, the night winds
sighed more mournfully, the light from
the cottage window was lost to view and
the cold, bleak world was before me.
How the shadows come and go along
the pathway of life. Sunshine and shad
ows, light and darkness—where does the
one cease and the other begin.
As the years go by and we have grown
older we can look back over the way we
have traveled and see them inextricably
intermingled.
There goes a wedding party, happy
and gay, and just behind it, moving with
awful silence, we see a funeral train.
Here we see a band of happy youths
and blushing maidens, followed closely
by decrepit age with faltering steps.
Down in the valley all is calm and quiet.
The dreamy hum of bees lulls us to rest,
the scent of new mown hay fills the air.
golden apples hang temptingly upon the
trees; but over yonder iises a rugged
mountain, its forbidding crest lost in the
clouds which hang low around its base.
Way up its sides the wi. d t howl among
the cavernous rocks. U|Oi its loftiest
peaks the lightnings flash and the rain
pours in torrents. Thus we fine life to be
a mixture of sunshine and shadow. When
we find a bright spot let us linger there
awhile and pluck the flowers; for tomor
row the shadows will creep above us and
the roses will give place to thorns.
The autumn days are here with nut
laden tree® and variegated leaves,
forming prismatic hues in the November
sunlight. The year is entering the “sere
Blood Poison.
Contagious B’ood Poison has been ap
propriately called the curse of mankind.
It is the one disease that physicians can
not cure; their mercurial aud potash
remedies only bottle up the poison in
the system, to surely break forth in a
more virulent form, resulting in a total
wreck of the system.

and yellow leaf” and the squirrels are lay
ing up their winter's store, preparing f< r
the “old age,” frosty and hoary, of the
waning season.
As we drive along the country roads
the patiidges whir away into the hedges,
the rabbits play hide and seek on the
hillside, while the woodpecker beats a
death’s tattoo upon the decayed trunk of
some mammoth of the forest.
Life, while it has its springtime, with'
youth and beauty, also brings the long;
summer of toil, after which eld age creeps
on apace and we find ourselves in au
tumn's melancholy days. But if the life
has been a useful one, these days of the,
“sere and yellow leaf” will not lie sad,
but will be beautiful and crowned with;
peace.
Let. us learn a lesson from this somber
season of the year, and so improve each
shining hour that when our summons
comes to enter the melancholly shades we
can do so with the full assurance that be
yond the snow clad winter there will be
the beautiful springtime of a life which
knows no heated summer, no wailing
winds of autumn aud no howling storms
of winter.
I often wonder why it is that we poor
mortals—mere atoms in this great uni
verse—will render our lives miserable
and the lives of those around us by our
prejudices, our selfishness and our pas
. sions. Why will man be such an animal
—so hog like if yon please—that he
wants everything his way and wants
everyone to think as he does? Some men
seem to be utterly devoid of the spirit of
toleration, and they are continually mak
ing war upon those who do not agree
with them socially, religiousiy or politi
cally.
It seems to me that the time has
come when we should banish all ran
cor and bickerings from our communi
ties, and let us unite in building up a
higher purer, nobler citizenship.
Let every man worship God under
his own “vine and fig tree’’and accord
ing to the dictates of his own con
science. According to each man the
same liberty in his political views
which you claim for yourself, and
remember that “the other fellow” may
be right and you wrong; that you are
not infallible, and that your own life,
for the most part, has been one of
mistakes and blunders Such a spirit
among our people would bring the
millennium very near. M. M. F.

AND INSTITUTIONS. I
If Rome would become more prosperous its home institutions must be patronized
by Rome people Its wonderful resources and advantages for manufacturing will avail
nothing unless our factories and wholesale merchants are encouraged and sustained by
that local pride and patronage, which are the secret of the growth and prosperity of
many less favored cities. 1 J
The Tribune is earnestly enlisted in the work of keeping Rome money in circula
tion at home. With this purpose the following list of Rome merchants, industries and
institutions has been compiled. We recommend every institution and article mentioned
in this column as worthy of the support and patronage of all citizens :
