TERRIBLE TRAGEDY
One Alabama Farmer Strikes Another
On the Head
AND DEATH QUICKLY FOLLOWS
The :Fst*l Blow 5Va» Struck With .a Tool
Used In the Black-Smith Shop
To Pull ou Tires.
Anniston, November 11. —Yesterday
afternoon, out in beat 14. some tifteen
miles west of the city, an altercation
occured between Dan Boozer, mer
chant and farmer, and William J. Me’
Dill, farmer, in which the former
struck the latter over the head with a
blacksmith shop tool and injured him
so badly that he died about 3 o’clock
this morning without having recov
ered consciousness.
Tb«> trouble occurred at Mr. Mc-
Dill’s blacksmith shop, which was
about two hundred yards from his
residence, and the tool used was a
contrivance of wood and iron for pull
ing tires on wheels.
Members of McDill’s family saw the
blow struck and the victim fall, but a
negro man, who was in the shop, was
the only one anywhere near.
There are two stories of the trag
edy.
It seems that the negro owed Boozer
some money and Boozer went to the
shop to see him and get it. McDill
was there and asked Boozer to come
in and sit down. Boozer said that he
did not know whether he wanted to or
net, that he had heard that McDill
had been talking about him. McDill
denied it, and up to this point the
stories agree, but here they widely
diverge.
One report goes that McDill tried to
peaceably argue the matter with
Boozer, but that the latter got mad
der and madder and finally as Me
Dill started out the door, picked up
the tool and knocked him down with
it.
The other is that when Boozer re
iterated the statement that McDill
had been talking about him the lat
ter with an oath called him a liar.
Boozer protested against being cursed
and McDill, pulling a knife from his
pocket, opening it and starting to
wards Boozer, said they would settle
it then and there. Then Boozer
picked up the heavy tool and struck
McDill to protect himself.
McDill was carried home and two
physicians summoned, but they could
not save him, and he died this morn
ing as stated.
It is said that a warrant was sworn
out and Boozer, who had made no at
tempt to get away, was arrested this
morning. He claims that the killing
was done in self defense.
Mr. McDill was very prominent out
in that section and so is Mr. Boozer.
The former, who was getting up in
years, leaves a wife and three grown
daughters, and Mj. Boozer, too, has
a wife and several children.

To all whom it may concern: I take
great pleasure in testifying to the efficient
qualities of the popular remedy for
eruptions of the skin known as P. P. P
(Prickley Ash, Poke Root and Potassium).
I suffered several years with an unsightly
and disagreeable eruption on my face,
and tried various remedies to remove ;it,
none of whiJi accomplished the object,
until this valuable preparation was re
sorted to. After taking three bottles, in
accordance with directions, I am now en
tirely cured. J. D. Johnson.

HARDIN FORCED TO STEAL.
The Wife of an Alleged Express Bobber
Makes a Startling C<»ufe*«ion.
Louisville, Nov. 11. —Mrs. Minnie
B. Ketchum, wife of Charles Hardin,
who was accused of stealing a $35,000
package from the Adams Express com
pany a few years ago, has made an al
leged confession, in which she says that
her husband was under unnatural influ
ence exerted by Charlton Elrod. The
confession was heard by Judge Barr in
Mrs. Eugenia Elrod’s suit against the
express company.
Ketchum, or Hardin, had told his
wife, she swears, that Charlton Elrod
got him a position with the Adams Ex
press company after an understanding
that they were to steal at least $1,000,-

that he was completely iti Elrod’s

have him returned to the Missouri pen
itentiary for an unexpired term if he did
not do his bidding. Eirod, too, forced
him to give up his salary as fast as it
was drawn, allowing him only enough
to live on in amounts of $1 and $2
Finally, according to Mrs. Ketchum,
Elrod’s creditors pressed .him ana he
told Ketchum to take w’hat money he
could. Ketchum came home one morn
ing with SI,OOO, and said he bad stolen
$35,000 for Eirod. They went to Cin
cinnati, where he gave Mrs. Braun, his
mother-in-law, $2,000, with which she
bought a house in Moreland, a suburb
of Chicago. They got $13,000 from El
rod and made their home there.
From time to time, she says, Elrod
visited them and got back as much of
the money as they would give him.
Illis nagging caused Ketchum to spend
the money and take to drink. He was
acquitted of the robbery in Nashville,
where he was tried. He is now in the
Michigan City (Ind.) prison for another
offense.

A 1* readier Killed by a Hear*
Troy, Mon., Nov. 10.—Rev. J. D.
Mentor of this place lost his life in a
desperate encounter with a bear in the
mountains near here. He had been out
with a hunting party and separated
from them during the morning. At
night he did not return, and becoming
alarmed, his companions started out to
search for him. Mentor’s hat was found
in the snow. Blood was seen and evi
dences of a terrible battle with a bear
were found. Following tha trail the
dead and lacerated b.tdy of the young
minister was found about 100 yards
away.

REPUBLICANS IN CONTROL.
They Have a Majority ot Ten In the North
Carolina Legislature*
Raleigh, Nov. 10. —The legislative
election returns have at last all been re
ceived. They show the composition of
the legislature to be 68 Republicans, 58
Populists, 45 Democrats. There is a tie
in one county, Jackson. The Populists
carried Hyde by only two majority.
National Democratic Committeeman Jo
sephus Daniels says that in at least 30
counties members were elected by less
than 50 majority.
The last legislature authorized elec
tions in 39 counties on the question of
levying a special tax for public schools.
The state superintendent of public in
struction says that so far as he can dis
cover no election was held in any
county. The oniy reason he can ad
vance is that the law provides for only
two boxes and two tickets at an election
and that it was feared another box and
ticket might invalidate the election.
