THE SPECTATOR.
To venture bej’ond the threshold of so
vast a theme as heroine worship is to re
view the history of the world.
Fresh from the hands of the creator,
we find our first heroine wandering
through flowery fields “Grace in all her
steps, Heaven in her eye, in every move
ment dignity and love.”
To the divine worship of “resplendent
Eve’’ Scripture attributes the downfall
of mankind.
“Hand in hand, with wandering steps and slow
Through Eden they took their solitary way.*’
Everywhere the heroine is the comple
ment of the hero. In the shadow of Jupi
ter’s temple rises the vestal fire of Juno’s
altar, and while Mars conquered king
doms abroad, Minerva preserved them at
home.
Not till Achilles dragged dead Hector
round the Trojan walls did Grecian arms
receive its crowning glory. Forgotten are
the vanities and ambitions of Herodias
the cruelty with which she demanded the
head of St. John, the Baptist. The an
cient classics glow with the worship of
the heroic woman. Turn to the “lays of
ancient Rome,” recall immortal Homer,
whose epic had never been sung were
there no beautious Helen, for whom
rhe Phrygian fields and Xanthan fl >od
Were swelled with bodies and were drunk with
blood.”
Had not the fatal passion of a Dido
kindled Virgil’s strain, would the for
tunes of Aeneas ever been ours? She
waved the’ twig of willow for her lover to
return again to the Carthagenian shores
and the song has been heard down the
ages.
In the breast of a Caesar or Alexander
glowed no purer, no more ardent, love of
country than animated the Spartan
mother, who buckled a shield on her son

and bade him come home from the battle
field with it or on it.
In Athens, when culture attained its
highest development we find her on the
lesche with the philosophers. Did not
the scholars of the Eastern Empire seek
the lecture halls of Hypatia?—Socrates
himself drank of the wisdom of Aspasia.
To read the modern press, however, a
traveler from Altruria might well con
clude that the intellect of women was a
fin de siecle discovery of the daughters of
Columbia.
In two Latin, sixteen French, four
Italian and six English tragedies, two of
the strongest, most comprehensive types
of the heroic women, according to pagan
ideal of virtue, have been preserved to
us. In Shakespeare’s tragedy, which is
probably the most historically correct,
the enticing attributes are exemplified in
one character, while the other foreshad
ows the flowers of Christian fortitude
and resignation.
Resplendent beauty, unrivaled charms,
brilliant mental accomplishments, forti
fied by the royal blood of the Ptolemies,
and offset by the splendor of a sensual
epoch, Cleopatra with her thousand aits,
is no less dazzling to modern imagination
that when, dallying with an Antony, she
aspired to be mistress of the world.
At the foot of the cross, what an im
posing Magdalen Cleopatra would have
been ! What higher tribute could Chris
tianity pay the “dull-eyed Octavia” than
did this guilty pagan enchantress? Con
scious of having forfeited all respect—
proud, vain, imperious woman that she
was—the humiliations of gracing a Ro
man triumph paled before her dread of
meeting the “chastisement of the sober
eye.”
A heroine lost us Eden ; it was but fit
ting that a heroine should restore us to
our rightful heritage, All pagan ages
worshiped the woman of one or more
brave deeds, but it remained for the hum
ble Virgin of the House of David to ele
vate, to proclaim to the end of time the
sacredness of all womankind.
At the consummation of her heaven
born mission the “oracles were struck
dumb,” and the self same star that guided
the Magi to the shrine ot the most per
fect Hero leads the Christian world to
the foot of Calvary for the model of the
most perfect Heroine.
“You cannot think that the buckling on
of the knight’s armor by his lady’s hand,”
says Ruskin, “was a mere caprice of
romantic fashion. It is the type of an
eternal truth—that the soul’s armor is
never well set to the heart unless a
woman’s hand has braced it; and it is
only when she braces it loosely that the
honor of manhood fails.” It was in the
evening of chivalry that Isabel of Castile
quelled tempest-tossed Spain by the exer
cise of those virtues that rouse the purest,
the noblest, the truest aspirations of the
soul.
How fades the patriotism of the pagan

in the light of the heaven born inspira
tion of the Maid of Orleans. What of the
Madame Rolands and Charlotte Cordays,
the self-sacrificing Florence Nightingale,
Grace Darling er Kate Shelby? Despite
the decadence on every side of reverence
for high ideals, the germs of the highest
heroism are with us still. Another Con
cord, another flag of the Union will not
call in vain for a Molly Pitcher, a Bar
bara Frietchie. Trite but true is the
aphorism: “It is not the force upon, but
the power behind the throne that makes
and unmakes worlds.” Reserve power is
woman’s divine birth right. It is as
effective today as it was in the beginning.
It is the force that now makes possible
all her instrinsic outward achievements.
Women of whom the public never hear

Planting Oats.
Question. —I want to plant a large
oar crop; would you advise me to plant
it all now, and what kind of seed oats
would you recommend?
Answer. —On account of the frequent
win ter-killing of oats, I would advise
planting half your land now, and the
rest of your crop in the spring. In this
way you do not take the risk of having
all your crops killed, and are moderately
sure of at least a partial crop. If your
land is rich, or if you propose to fertil
ize, I would recommend the winter
grazing out. They stand th" cold bet
ter than any other variety, and on good
land wi.i make you a fine crop, sow
from a bushel and a half to two bushels
per acre. Should you not be able to get
these, or if your land is only fairly good,
sow the Texas rust-proof oats, and for
fall sowing, always use seed from fall
sown oats, as they are without doubt
more hardy than seed from those sowed
in the spring. Foryour spring planting
use the Burt oat, sowing at least a
bushel and a half to the acre. The Burt
oat is very light, and therefore not as
valuable for feeding as other varieties,
but it grows off rapidly and matures
early, and there is more certainty of a
crop from them than from any other
variety, when sowed in the spring.
Don’t be afraid to fertilize your land for
the oat crop, for none responds more
readily to thorough preparation than
this, the cheapest and best food crops
for our horses and mules. After taking
off the oats next summer, don’t fail to
plant the land in peas, and thus keep up
the fertility of your fields.—State Agri
cultural Department
