VERY IMPRESSIVE
The Cover Removed From the Monument
0! Captain Pepper
SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT MYRTLE HILL
A Great Proccr.lon of Friends With and
Without Civic
Di pley.
Sunday afternoon witnessed a great
outpouring of Romans of every station
in life to pay tribute to the memory
of the late Captain M. M. Pepper in
the ceremony of unveiling his monu
ment according to the rites and ob
servances of the Woodman of the
World, which took place at Myrtle
Hill at 3 p. m.
The day was auspicious, the cere
mony impressive and the concourse
immense. Prof. Fords splendid band
lead the procession after which, in
the following order came, the officers,
the special choir, consisting of Cap
tain Childs, Prof. Clark, Messrs. Bar
ker and Berry. The Order of the
Woodmen, friends, relatives and
acquaintances. Mr. F. J. Willingham
was officer of the’day and marhalled
the order in a wedge shaped body
the family of Captain Pepper within.
The band then played “Nearer My God
to Thee.” Song by the choir. The un
veiling by Mr. F. J. Willingham. Read
ing of the retiral and oration by Rev. Dr.
Headden. The address was polished,ap
propriate and greatly enjoy< d by all
present. Just at its close Mr. Lancaster
photographed the scene.
The monument is a beautiful work of
art and occupies a conspicuous position in
the cemetery. The services were con
ducted by the members of Live Oak
camp Woodmen of the World, and were
participated in by the public school
children, the fire department, the attaches
of the Rome postoflice, members of the
Rome Light Guard and the Hill City
Cadets, with all of which he was influent
ially connected in life, as well as by the
Knights Templars and blue lodges of
Masonry and other secret orders.
The exercises were of a nature befitting
the character of the man, who was so uni
versally beloved and respected by the peo
ple of Rome and to whose interests his
whole life was devoted.

Mr. Photographer Lancaster wishes
to give his patrons a pointer about
tjjeir Christmas photos and urge them
to go at once to his studio.for sittings
so the work will be finished by Christ
mas.
It is almost a never-failing habit
with the people to put this off till the
last week or the week before Christ
mas, and many are disappointed -
Let it be understood that cloudy or
rainy rainy weather makes no difer
enee. Just as good negatives call be
made as when the sun is shining, but
it reuuires good light to print and
finish up.
So don’t put it off. Go and let Lan
caster make some of these beautiful
Platino photos, the very thi gfora
nice Christmas present. Prices are
reasonable and the quality of his work
is above the average.
Don’t fail to see his Platino or steel

ASSASSINS UNDER ARREST.
Men Who Killed a No, th Carolinian Last
Angu.t < nptured—Other New,.
Raleigh, Nov. 16.—John Lee of Co
lumbus county was shot down in his
mother’s house one night last August
by concealed men. and his mother was
shot and wounded. Two negroes, James
Haynes and Alexander Grist, have
just been lecretly taken to Robeson
c uuty. Threats to lynch them had
been made and their friends had
declared they would aid them to break
jail. Two white men have been ar
rested charged with being accessories
to the murder, but only one is bailed to
appear at court. Grist confesses he
aided in the murder.
The North Carolina Baptist associa
tion, only two delegates dissenting, has
adopted the following resolution against
the state university and normal and in
dustrial schools and colleges:
Whereas, State aid to higher education
by taxation is wrong, unjust and unwise;
wrong against the whole people who can
not receive the benefit of such opportuni
ties; unjust to private and corp irate and
denominational institutions voluntarily
supported; unwise because the people of
North Carolina are now inadequately pr ■-
vided with public schools for their chil
dren and need every cent of their taxes
that can be spared for that purpose
Resolved, therefore, That the Baptist
State convention of North Carolina re
affirms its opposition to state aid by taxa
tion to higher education.
The Baptists have over 100 of the 170
members of the new legislature and
hence this action is very important.

HARRY ST. JOHN NOT DEAD.
Man Accused of Killing His Wife Said
to Be Alive and Well.
Guthrie, O. T., Nov. 16 There is
considerable excitement both here and
at Oklahoma City over the report that
Harry St. John, son of ex-Governor
Johu P. St. John of Kansas, is not dead,
as announced three weeks ago. Young
St. John was under indictment for the
murder of his wife and his trial was to
have commenced shortly after his death
was announced.
The story of - St. John’s probable re
turn to life was started a week after his
supposed burial, and although it was
strenuously denied, it will not down.
It has been revived by a reliable El Reno
man, who declared that within a w.ek
he has seen St. Johu walking along the
streets of Kansas City with Judge J. H.
Pitzer of this city, his former associate
in the legislature and afterwards his at
torney. It is a significant fact that as
yet it has not been shown that anybody
but the doctors and undertakers saw Mr.
St. John after hij death was announced.
