TOBACCO RAISING
It Will Receive Pr p r Attention in the
Near Fuime.
SHERIFF. BURROUGHS GOOD IDEAS
There ie a Large B>dy <.f Clvmp Lind lu
B.rtow'Specially kdap ed
To the Pi nt.
That tobacco raising will in the nen,-
future come in for mote liberal attention
by the southern farmer is a very conclu
sive fact. That there are in some parts
of Bartow county very extensive bodies
of land especially adapted to the growth
«>f tire wet d. Sheriff Lee Burrougb gives
imp e evidence. Tobacco is raised to
a very small way by some of our farmers,
..uiy wr ho ue consumption, and the
quality is very tine, comparing favorably
with the products of other states.
Now that the great producing country
of the world, Cuba, is in a condition ot
Memorilization that will not be settled
soon, and, even after peace may be effect
ed, it will take years to recuperate the
almost lost industry, capital is looking
out for more favored localities within the
bounds of this glorious republic, for to
bacco lands. Already large companies
Save been organized in the north are now
»pperating very extensively in Florida
and other states, and have met with won
derful success.
In tobacco, like everything else, old
Bartow county comes to the front, and
offers the very best opportunities for the
cultivation of the weed, and now it only
remains for the proper steps to be taken
to bring her advantages to the attention
of the outside world.
“I have wondered for years why to.
bacco was not more extensively raised in
Bartow county,” remarked Sheriff
Burrough yesterday to a Newsman, when
the subject of tobacco raising was under
discussion. -
‘•ln some parts cf the county it can be
raised in abuncance as well as superior
in quality. Take that section of the
country lying to the west and south of
Kingston known as the piney woods lands
that starts in about the old Kit Dodd
place, around Taylorsville, west and down
the East & West, and ends the goodness
knows where.
There are thousands and thousands of
the very best kind of land for the cul
tivation of tobacco. And. too, these
lands are very cheap, from the fact that
the timber has been cut off by the saw
mill men, and now considered almost
valueless by the general public. The
land is peculiary adapted to the weed
Srom the fact that it is of that sandy, grav
elly gray kind that is so much sought
after ty tobacco men, it is not too rich to
make the weed grow to such large pro
ponfStes that destroys the value of the
v f,,r yon know rank growth is not
ant is wanted for the superior article.
E have a friend that has gone into this
section, bought very exensively of this
cheap land, and is now raising as good
tobacco as anybody, as well as the best
eotton..
Tlmae lauds have been long neglected on
account of their isolation, but the day is
sot far distant when they will be as
thickly populated as the best river farms
of Bartow, that will come in for attention
at the proper time.”
In this day of improved tobacco barns
and the splendid improvments in the way
of tobacco curing, there is a wide field
for investment in our lands, and no doubt
tobacco raisers will be attracted to the
wide scope of county indicated by Sheriff
Burrougb.
The land is in demand. tobacco is as
staple as money almost, and there is no
reason to believe that in the future the
tobacco industry of this county will not
reach the proportions of section in such
states as Kentucky, Tennessee and
North Carolina. In the latter state oot
ton is almost abandoned, the farmers
now giving their attention to tobacco
raising.
Let our Bartow county farmers get
together, discuss tobacco raising at the
slub meetings, and give attention to the
matter as its importance justifies. There

Why is it that we can sell Carpets and
Smyrna Rugs at 50c. on the Dollar?
Eight years ago the McKinley tariff on Carpets and Rugs gave a great stimulus
to these industries in the United States. Scores of new mills were erected, thousands
of new looms put in to manufacture Carpets and Rugs. The strong competition among
these mills; their increased facilities; their improvements in machinery and manufac
turing; then the Wilson bill, giving us free wool, have all combined to bring the price
down to a little more than half the price of a few years ago. Few people realize how
cheaply they can buy a floor covet ing—we want every one to know it.
