BIG SWARM OF EELS
They Stopped the Factory at
Trion
ONE HUNDRED AND SIXIY FOUND
Clogging !h « Tnrbin Wheel That Fur
nished the Power For
the Mill*.
Trion, Nov, 19.—Quite a remarka
b'e occurrence happened at the Trion
cotton mills latt Thursday evening.
Just before quitting time in the af
ternoon that portion of the mills
which is propelled mainly by water
power, was shut down because of
some deficiency in the power.
The water in the fore bay was shut
off and workmen were sent down to
examine the large turbine wheels to
■ascertain the cause of the trouble.
When the men got down to their
work their astonishment may well be
imagined when it was found that the
powerful wheels, which run under a
fourteen foot head, were literally
■choked down with an immense swarm
•of eels, too large to get through the
wheel gates were taken out, and how
many smaller ones there were that
got away no one knows.
The eels weighed 278 pounds, and
Dr Palmour, from whom we get our
information, says he never saw so
many eels in his life. Considering the
large size of the wheels and the im
mense power they develop, it is very
remarkable that enough of these
slippery customers should get in and
stop the whole machinery.
NINE MONTHS IN BED. CURED
24 HOURS.
T. J. Blackmore, of Haller & Blackmore
Pittsburg, Pa., says: “A short time since I
procured a bottle of “Mystic Cure.” It got
me out of the house in twenty-four hours.
I took to my bed with Rheumatism nine
months ago and the “Mystic Cure” is tho
only medicine that did any good. I had
five of the best physicians in the city, but
received very little relie. Irom them. I

WRITTEN AT RANDOM-
Quite au interesting spectacle was
presented on the streets of Calhoun
■one night last week when a traveling
man in a two horse covered vehicle
exhibited to a curious crowd a num
ber of live snakes, lizzards and other
■creatures, says the Calhoun Times.
He would reach down in this boxes
and pick up a handful of writhing,
twisting live snakes in about the same
manner as most persons take up a
handful of straw. He wound the rep
tiles around his neck and rubbed the
noses of rattlers and cotton mouths
against his own cheeks just as if they
had been wood.
Probably the most interesting rep
tile he exhibited was an African
python which weighed 72 pounds and
was about eight inches through. The
roan said he had captured the snake
near Port Natal, South Africa, eight
years ago.
He said these snakes lived to be 150
years old and live on deer, goats, or
any kind of game they can catch. He
feeds his on rabbits and it eats about
’ 7 per week.
Next morning the editor of The
Times hunted up this snake man and
had a talk with him. He said his
name was Walter Ralston and that
for many years he had been engaged
in the work of collecting specimens of
snakes, lizzards etc., for the Smithso
nian Museum at Washington and
other zoological institutions in New

SCOTT & BCWNE, New York.
I York and London. He said he had
traveled in this work over most of the
wild countries of the world and had
gathered many specimens from India,
Australia, Japan, China, Africa and
the Pacific Islands*
He had made a long and close study
of all kinds of snakes and said only
rattlesnakes, c >tton mouths and cop
perheads in this section were poison.
The common blacksnake, bull snake
and spreading adders were, he said,
entirely harmless and should not be
killed.
No lizzard bite, he said, was deadly
and this includes the bites of all kinds
of the green and red headed lizzards
commonly called scorpions. When
bitten by any of the lizzard tribe
(or so-called scorpions) sprinkle the
wound with carbonate of ammonia,
let remain two hours, wash <ff and
rub well with vasilene, was his rem
edy. No trouble need be feared when
this is done, be said.
“When bitten by any poison
snake,” said he, “use a 6 per cent
solution of clorite o( lime and inject
It around the wound with a hyper
dermic syringe, from three to four
hyperdermics, and immediately re
move the bandage which you have, of
course, previously tied around the
limb, so circulation can be restored as
once.
Then inject a solution of 130th
grain of strychnine every hour for
four hours, then reduce to 1-15 grain
and continue injections every hour
for ten or twelve hours.
When the above "named remedies
eannot be applied get from the drug
store Apis Melliep (which is the
poison extracted from the s*ing of a
bee) make 8 per cent solution and
give one teaspoonful in a glass of
sweet milk every hour.
Another remedy is to cut the wound
so as to obtain drainage of blood and
cordoise the wound with a 95 per cent
solution of carbolic acid.”
He said he had used the above rem
edies and found them effective. He
carried a diploma in medicine, and he
had formerly allowed deadly snakes
to bite him on wagers, but would do
so no more, for about a year ago a
ratler got hold of his thumb and it
had to be amputated and Ralston
came near losing his life.

To all whom it may concern : I take
great pleasure in testifying to the efficient
qualities of the popular remedy for
eruptions of the skin known as P. P. P
(Prickley Ash, Poke Root and Potassium).
I suffered several years with an unsightly
and disagreeable eruption on my face,
and tried various remedies to remove it,
none of which accomplished the object,
until this valuable preparation was re
sorted to. After taking three bottles, in
accordance with directions, I am now en
tirely cured. J. D. Johnson.

Carborundum.
The manufacture of carborundum is
one of the most unique of recently es
tablished industries, and the plant at
Niagara is one of extreme interest in
connection with the amazing power
now generated at that locality. As is
now well known, carborundum is a
compound of carbon and silicon, in ap
pearance presenting a surface of high
luster, iridescent with many colors, the
valuable property of the substance con
sisting in its extreme hardness, in
which respect it stands next to the dia
mond, and consequently is coming into
extensive use as a polishing and abra
sive agent. In the process of manufac
ture, quartz sand, coke, sawdust and
salt are intimately mixed. This material
is placed in the furnace around a large
cylinder of coke and the entire mass
covered up and finally walled in with a
loose framework of bricks. At the ends
of this furnace are the poles or elec
trodes of a powerful electric circuit, and
when the current is turned on an intense
heat is produced, which results in a
chemical combination of the carbon of
the coke and sawdust and the silicon of
the sand. The process is continued for
24 hours, and then, after cooling, the
carborundum is extracted, a series of
operations finally preparing it for the
market.—New York Sun.
