appeared in her breast, but it soon de

and notwithstanding the treatment of
the best physicians, it continued to

Plants That Spread Quickly.
Tho dandelion is an old world flower,
not native in America, save far to the
north and on some of the highest of
our western mountains. But somehow
it. was brought here, perhaps from Eng
land, in old colonial times. Now we see
its golden heads and feathery balls at
every grassy roadside, the “clocks” the
boys and girls blow to tell the hour. A
few years ago farmers in tho northwest
found a new weed, a vile, prickly weed,
in their wheatfields. In a very short
time this weed, the Russian thistle, has
spread over wide acres of the best farm
land in that part of the country and has
done great injury to the crops.
How do these plants spread so fast
and so far? They are not carried about
and planted. No eno would be so fool
ish as to sow Russian thistles. The
mother plant must have ways of her
own for sending her offspring abroad in
to the world. Plants propagate them
selves in two ways, from seed or from
buds. Sometimes these buds are borne
on slender runners. A strawberry plant,
after it has blossomed, begins to send
out such runners, with buds, uufolding
tufts of leaves, along them. These tufts
are at first connected with the parent
plant, but later the runners between
break away, and each tuft becomes a
new plant. Many grasses, like Bermuda
grass and the troublesome quick or couch
grass, have creeping stems, each joint
sending out a bunch of roots below and
bud on the upper side. If you try to hoe
up such grasses, you only make matters
worse, for each joint when cut off is
ready to form an independent plant.
Such grasses spread very fast and soon
take possession of the land they gat
into. —Thomas H. Kearney, Jr., in St.
Nicholas.
Why is it,
If Catarrh is a blood disease, as some
claim, that physicians frequently advise
change of air and climate to those suffer
ing? Catarrh is a climate affection, and
nothing but a local remedy or a change
of climate will cure it. Ely’s Cream
Balm is so efficient as to do away with
the necessity of leaving home and friends
causing instant relief and is a real cure of
catairh.

A Monument to New Jersey Troops.
Chattanooga, Nov. 23.—A party of
distinguished citizens of New Jersey
arrived in the city to attend the dedica
tion here of the monument erected at
Orchard Knob to the New Jersey troops
who fought in the battles of Chicka
maugua, Chattanooga and Missionary
ridge. The monument was erected at a
cost of $14,000 and is one of the hand
somest in the park.
Clothiers File a Chattel Mortgage.
Detroit, Nov. 23.—Mabley & Co.,
one of the leading retail clothing firms
of the city, filed a chattel mortgage for
$150,000 to the Union Trust company as
trustees for their creditors. A blanket
mortgage covering the entire stock of
clothing, boots and shoes, men’s fur
nishings, etc., was also made to the
same company.
A Valuable Prescription.
Editor Morrison of Worthington, Ind.,
“Sun,” writes: “You have a val
uable prescription in Electric Bitters,and
I can cheerfully recommend it for Con
stipation and Sick Headache, and as a
general system tonic it has no equal.”
Mrs. Annie Stehle, 2025 Cottage Grove
Ave., Chicago, was all run down, could
not eat nor digest food, had a backache
which never left her and felt tired and
weary, but six bottles of Electric Bitters
restored her health and renewed her
strength. Prices 50 cents and SI.OO. Get

Miners Demand an Increase.
Pittsburg, Nov. 23.—A joint com
mittee of coal operators and miners are
I in session here considering the recent
| demands of the men for an advance. It
is thought that the advance will be re
fused, as the operators have said that
the condition of the market will not
warrant an increase.
Senators Going to Washington.
Washington, Nov. 23.—Members of
the senate are coming to Washington
each day, and from interviews with
each arrival it is apparent that the sen
ators expect little save routine legisla
tion, including the passage of the an
nual appropriation bills, at the short
session of congress.
Croedon and Craig May Be Matched.
San Francisco, Nov. 23.—Negotia
tions are pending between Ben Falk,
manager of the Golden West Athletic
club and the manager of Craig, known
as the “Harlem Coffee Cooler.” for a
match with Dan Creedon. Craig was
at one time champion middleweight of
England.
Killed Hh Wife and Himself.
Greensburg, Pa., Nov. 23.—At Del
mont, Pa., near here, John Tarr, aged
25 years, shot and killed his wife and
then committed suicide.

F —iROMEI—
AND INSTITUTIONS.!
If Rome would become more prosperous its home institutions must be patroniz d
by Rome people. Its wonderful resources and advantages for manufacturing will avail
nothing unless our factories and wholesale merchants are encouraged and sustained by
that local pride and patronage; which are the secret of the growth and prosperity of
many less favored cities.
The Tribune is earnestly enlisted in the work of keeping Rome money in circula
tion at home. With this purpose the following list of Rome merchants, industries and
institutions has been compiled. We recommend every institution and article mentioned
in this column as worthy of the support and patronage of all citizens :
