Readers <>♦' Thk Tribune have
learned to look forward to each new
and successful aehieviueut of Rome s
great daily. We have issued several
special editions since the present
management has been in charge and
we are happy to say that each and
every one has been an improvement
on its predecessor as has been evinced
by the popular -public favor with
which they have been received.
Early in December we intend to issue
a special edition which will eclipse
our previous efforts. Rome is steadily
growing and there is healthy and sub
stantial improvement going Ou all
over the section of country tributary
to the North Georgia metropolis. Now
is the time to keep our advantages
before the people.
In no other way can this be done
quite so successfully as through the
medium ot a widely circulated news
paper like Thk Tribune. Every edi
tion of a special character that we
have gotten out has gone abroad on
its mission of progress and the results
have been made apparent by the at
tention attracted to this section of
country.
We have endeavor ad to make every
edition as full and complete as possi
ble, but in this one we want to cover
the whole ground. All that we ask is
the liberal co-operation of the people
for whom we have labored so earnestly
and for whom we expect to continue
to worn as long as we control the des
tinies of The Tribune
It will be to the interest of every
business or professional man in North
Georgia and North and East Alabama,
to secure space in this great issue
The merchant, the manufacturer, the
land owner, the mine operator, the
professional man and all who are in
terested in educational, industrial
work, or emigration work, will be
benefitted by represention in its col
umns.
Not less than ten thousand readers,
in every part of the country, and
especially in the West and Northwest,
will read this great edition and profit
by the information gained from its
columns. Our solicitors are already
out and will make a thorough canvass
of the country contiguous to Rome
and we bespeak for them the consider
ation which they are entitled to in
promoting this laudable enterprise in
the interest of our city and section.

Graveyard Literature.
The fashion of the world change#,
and the trade of the epitaph maker
grows slack. Here and there, it is true,
some one is still honored after the old
custom, but for the most part a text,
appropriate or the reverse, a brief rec
ord of birth and death, a word or two of
vague and general significance, with
possibly a simple expression of regret,
have replaced iu our modern cemeteries
those shorthand histories of the dead,
tragic or humorous, tender or severe,
Some stained as with wine and made bloody,
And some as with tears,
■which formerly marked their resting
places.
It is not that in these later years men
have lost that craving for remembrance
which, as old as life itself, is so vain,
in the case at least of the commonalty
of the race, that it might well be a sub
ject for laughter were it not that what,
seen from without is purely grotesque.
Growing |
Children I
One-third of all the children M
die before they are five years
old. Most of them die of some g
wasting disease. They grow H
very slowly; keep thin in flesh; |
fare fretful; food does not do g
them much good. You can’t B
say they have any disease, yet R
they never prosper. A slight fa
cold, or some stomach and |
bowel trouble takes them away g
easily.

assumes quite anomer complexion when
it is touched by our own personality.
It is not that the desire to be remem
bered is gone, and it is likely enough
that in pome fashion or another we
should all still bo epitaph’ makers, for
ourselves or other people, if we had net
lest faith in the permanency of the
work. But time brings involuntary wis
dom. “Our fathers find their graves in
our short memories, and sadly tell us
how v.o may be buried in our sur
vivors.’’ "While I live,” promises a
lover with melancholy truthfulness in
a Roman epitaph quoted by Mr. Pater
—"while I live you will receive this
homage; after my death, rVho can tell?”
And so it comes to pass that, submit
ting to the inevitable, men learn to lim
it their aspirations and to content them
selves, byway of epitaph, with the
"two narrow words, ‘Hie jacet, ’ ” with
which, says Sir Walter Raleigh, "elo
quent death” covers all.—l. A. Taylor

Contributors to Magazines.
One contributor states that ho is a
“gentleman” wishing to go abroad on
a historical and antiquarian tour
through Normandy, the only difficulty
being that he has not sufficient means
to accomplish his object. He therefore
requests my father to send him £l2 at
ouce, and he, the writer, will immedi
ately start aud contribute gratuitously,
he says, to The Conihill an account of
his journey. He trusts that if my father
cannot do this he will make some other
arrangement. The contributor thinks of
going by Rouen, Caen, Bayeux. St. Mi
chel and returning by Tours and Or
leans. "You will perceive,” he says,
"that.this is an original tour and con
tains many interesting points.”
"Honored and adiflired sir,” writes
another in Johnsonian language from
the depths of the country, ‘ ‘in the writ
er of this letter you would behold the
unlucky, unfortunate and unworthy
contributor of some poetical subjects to
your influential and extensive Cornhill
Magazine. Indeed, I have but received
a day or two ago such a piece returned.
I now try my hand at prose and send
you a paper for the May number of the
magazine.” (The letter is dated March
27, aud the editor and printers would
have to bestir themselves.) “If the
manuscript is returned,” says the au
thor, “I will send the postage necessary.
May such a contingency be far off.”—

TIME
TRIED
Time proves the worth of every
thing. It is the test of honesty. It
wears off the exterior and exposes the
solidity or the worthlessness beneath.
There is nothing more susceptible
to time than a piano. The Kranich &

test of time, which has stood well in
tone, which keeps its perfect action

OUR CARPET COLUMN!
Why is it that we can sell Carpets and
Smyrna Rugs at 50c. on the Dollar?
Eight years ago the McKinley tariff on Carpets and Rugs gave a great stimulus
to these industries in the United States. Scores of new mills were erected, thousands
of new looms put in to manufacture Carpets and Rugs. The strong competition among
these mills; their increased facilities; their improvements in machinery and manufac
turing; then the Wilson bill, giving us free wool, have all combined to bring the price
down to a little more than half the price of.a few years ago. Few people realize how
cheaply they can buy a floor covering—we want every one to know it.
