SUIT FOR SLANDER
It Ended in a Small Verdict
Yesterday
TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS ONLY
Was the Daninge Assessed By the <1 ury as
Having Been Dane to tbe Character
Ot the Complainant
Twenty-five dollars damage.
That was the amount of damage assessed
by the jury in the slander case yesterday.
It was a peculiar case and Col. Linton
Dean and Hon. Seaborn jWright both
either won or lost, they have been una
ble to determine which.
Hon. W. J. Neel was leading counsel
for Landrum, the defendant, assisted by
Dean & Dean.
Hon. Seaborn Wright represented
Fortune, the plaintiff, assisting Mr. M.
B. Eubanks, leading counsel in the case.
The suit grew out of the charge said to
have been made by Landrum that Fortune
contended that he didn't steal the cot
ton and that Landrum had accused him
falsely.
Landrum pleaded that he had not ac
cused Fortune of stealing, and that some
body had lied about it.
One witness swore that Fortune had
promised to give all that he recovered in
the suit for slander to the lawyers and
witnesses.
Finally Judge Hutchins, having lis
tened patiently to the forensic efforts of
Rome’s most eloquent lawyers, summed
the whole matter up in a profound and
learned disquisition in the way of a
charge. The jury brought in a very
striking verdict awarding the plaintiff
$25 damages.
The attorneys are puzzled to under
stand why Fortune should not have been
damaged more than $25, if he was dam
aged at all.
A $25 character they are disposed to
regard as a picturesque proposition.

CHEERED THE PRESIDENT.
Massachusetts Republicans Paid a Tribute
to Cleveland -General Alger’s Speech.
Boston, Nov. 26. —For the first time
in the history of the Republican party
in Massachusetts, a thoroughly Repub
lican organization, the Home Market
club, bound to the cause of protection,
cheered Grover Cleveland.
The banquet of the club at Mechanic’s
hall was one of the largest in its his
tory. Nearly a thon-and members, rep
resenting the industries of nearly every
city and town in the state, gathered
about the tables, and ■when the feast
was over listened, with a thousand more
in the galleries, to speeches, by some of
the generals who toured the country in
the interest of the gold standard and by
Senator Hoar and Lieutenant Governor
Wolcott.
Senator Hoar, in his speech, said that
the Democratic party had been saved
from itself by Republican effort.
General Alger, after relating some of
the interesting incidents of the tour,
closed his remarks by paying an elo
quent tribute to President Cleveland,
and for the first time in Boston a Re
publican body cheered that official.

Both sides agreed on all but one and
here they were diametrically opposed.
Mr. Roberts wanted the Canadian
claims dealt with siugley, but to this
Mr. Dickinson strongly objected, argu
ing that the British scalers should put
in all their claims and then the United
States authorities would submit their
defense at San Francisco. Mr. Peters
replied that it might not be necessary to
sit at San Francisco.
The point was finally settled in favor
of the British contention. Sixteen Brit
ish claims, with a total of $459,500 and
the interest added from the time of
seizure, were filed and ten more will
follow.
Sensational Suicids of a Newspaper Man.
Atlanta, Nov. 26.—Richard E. Cher
ry, until a week ago associate editor of
The Penny Press of Albany, committed
suicide in that city in a sensational
manner. He drank half a vial of mor
phine and went home. He was met by
his mother and exclaimed: “Mother, I
have come home to die,” exhibiting the
remains of the vial. She tussled with
him for the bottle, but he succeeded in
drinking the remainder and died in a
few hours. He w:ts 30 years old, well
liked, and a good journalist.

HEROISM IN MINES.
Instances IVliere Brave Men Have Risked
Their Lives to Save Others.
Never was there a mining disaster of
any magnitude without several in
stances of individual gallantry in sav
ing boys alone, says a writer in Chums.
As a colliery manager said the other
day, “There may be a score of cases of
that kind after a single accident and
nobody be any the wiser.”
“A boy told me once,” he proceeded,
“that after an explosion one of the men
who was with him brought him along
a considerable distance in the workings.
At last they met the afterdamp. The
lad was so terrified, so anxious to get
out, that he wanted to rush through
and make his way to the shaft. If he
had gone on, he certainly would have
dropped, but the man would not let
him. He stopped him by force, and
though the lad bit and fought like a
little demon he stuck to him and held
him near to the ground, so that they
could breathe. How do you think he
calmed the boy at last? Sang comic
songs to him. Well, they had to keep
where they were for about five hours,
and then, when the air had got better,
the man started off and brought the
youngster out safely, though once he
was nearly suffocated by the afterdamp.
Now, there’s a case that nobody would
have heard of probably if the lad hadn’t
happened to have told me about it.”
As an instance of heroism in this di
rection that is known, however, I re
call a story I heard near the bank of tbe
Hyde pit after the explosion in 1889.
You know that the slightest delay in
flying for the shaft may mean death.
In the neighborhood of Bolton some
few years ago one man out of a party
of colliers stopped behind for a minute
or so to look for his sou, a boy of 14,
who was working close by. The two
met, but, alas, they perished there to
gether and were found clasped in each
other’s arms. And paternal devotion as
thus manifested has cost many a brave
fellow his life.
Well, on the occasion referred to a
man named Haslam brought from the
workings, or met as he was scurrying
along to the pit mouth, a youth about
16, and throughout the.terrible journey
he stuck to the lad with the most heroic
determination. Twice the boy stumbled
and fell, but the noble collier dragged
him to his feet and urged him to push
on with all speed. Other mishaps befell
them, yet both, I rejoice to say, gained
the surface alive and comparatively
well.
