with local applications, as they cannot
teach the seat of the disease., Catarrh is

THE SPECTATOR.
Through the kindness of Mr. Raymond
McConfiell I was permitted to take a
tour through the Floyd county jail last
week.
The inmates seem to be a happy lot on
the surface, but a few minutes coversa
tion with them they tell a different tale
one of woe; and if you are the least bit
chicken hearted you quickly find you
self sympathising with them.
“Ise locked in de stable wid de sheep,’’
came a refrain from ‘ The Cradle of the
Deep” in rich bass notes from a cell at
the end. “What's that?” I asked

That’s the whole secret tn a
word. We can cure no disease
unless we can keep up the pa

only one way to do that —feed
him. But if the sy stem refuses
food? Then use SCOTT’S
EMULSION of Cod-liver Oil
with Hypophosphites. It goes
STRAIGHT TO THE BLOOD,
stops the wasting, rekindles
the vital fire, makes new flesh
and so renders a hopeful fight
possible against ANY disease.
Especially is this so in bron
chial and lung troubles, in the
relief and cure of which Scott’s
Emulsion has won its reputa
tion. Book about it free.

“Say, Jesse, kin I have some water?
My frote’s like er lime kiln.”
“Come down to drinking water,

drink it yesterday and stay outer

‘.Done year ’em say dis Oostanaula

claw closed over the tincup and drew
it in through the bars.
“What, you back here again, Liz?
What’s the charge this time?” to a
half yellow girl.
“ ’Deed, honest ter Gawd ”
But the bass voice at the back of
the cell struck in—
“Stan’in on de corner don’t mean
no harm. My baby!"
“Yes; I’ll bet that was it,” said
Jesse, taking the verse for an answer.
“Is you got Gawge Jackson locked
up yere, Mister?’’ says an old mammy
in a black bead-handkerchief, who
has wandered in through the empty
corridor.
“George Jackson, George Jackson
anybody named George Jackson in

“Yere yer air. Step out dar, chile,

Oh! Lordy. Lbrdy, honey, chile.

Oh, he didn’t want ter wander from
his own fireside,” sings the bass, lead

“Shut up there, you people, and
give the old woman a chance to hear

“Better keep your change to buy

Jesse who knew whereof he was speak

the asphalted way to Dublin.
The chaingang wagon came to take
out the three negroes who stole some
caps from a store and the prisoner
heard the drivers, “Whoa” and the
soprano started up
“Swing low, a sweet chariot.”
“Step cut here, you people, one at a
time. Dick’s come to give you a bug

Step aside here, George Jackson.”
Jesse slips the bracelets on his
charges in couples and marches them

Contest—Bls Crowd Expected.
San Francisco, Dec. I. The Na
tional Athletic club may have to select
the referee for the Fitzsimmons-Shar
key fight. Martin Julian. Lynch and
several other interested parties met at
Sharkey’s training quarters during the
evening when the question was dis*
cussed. Lynch and Julian both sub
mitted a number of names, but noue
proved satisfactory to both sides. Af
ter some delay it was finally decided to
meet Wednesday morning for a final
consultation. If no satisfactory agree
ment can be reached inside of one hour
the club will select a referee according
to the articles of agreement.
Sharkey and Fitzsimmons are both
indulging in light work. Sharkey ex
pects to scale lb 2 pounds, which will
probably be five pounds more than
“Lanky Bob.”
Billy Smith, Danny Needham and
George Allen will be behind Sharkey
with Julian, Hickey and Stenzler likely
to second Fitzsimmons. Everything is
in readiness for the contest and a bigger
crowd than witnessed the Corbett-
Sharkey battle is confidently expected.
Even money that Sharkey does not
stay six rounds with Fitzsimmons is the
favorite betting proposition here, and
thousands of dollars have been wagered
on this basis. The heavy racetrack bet
tors from the east are all solid for Fitz
simmons, and while 20 to 9 are the pre
vailing odds, in favor of the Cotnish
man, several bets of SIOO to S4O have
been .recorded-
