COWBOYS’ CARNIVAL.
kN INTERESTING EXHIBITION OF DAR-
ING HORSEMANSHIP.
Laramie, Wy., the Scene of Some Splendid
Rough Riding Contests by Cowboys.
Hunter Boy Upsets Several Wagons and
Takes Nearly an Hour to Subdue.
The cowboys of the Laramie plains
held their animal carnival the other day
near Laramie City, Wy. Nearly 200
“punchers” from cow camps in various
parts of the state were present, and at
least 1,000 visitors from Laramie City
and other towns witnessed the riding
and roping feats which made up the
greater part of the programme. Nearly
everybody went out in wagons and buck
boards and formed a sort of a corral
around an acre or so of ground where
the main performances were given. A
rope stretched around this iuclosuro
gave the field a sporty look, as if a foot
racing prize fight was to be the feature.
Johnny Harding of the Y. T. outfit
gave the first exhibition of broncho bust
ing. A wild eyed horse called Tom Mead
\ was introduced in the ring, and, with
' the aid of a blindfold, was saddled and
• bridled. Harding mounted him all right,
and the pair were turned loose. There
was bucking of all sorts without delay.
Tom Mead went up in the air with his
head down and his back bowed, until he
looked like a crescent in the heavens.
_ When he came down, he did the same
thing over again, and then varied the
programme by pitching, and finally
broke for the audience. Tho crowd scat
tered, and no one was hurt. Harding
worked him to the center of the field
again, and the performance was repeat
ed, except that he “bucked tho line” of
spectators at a new place, until he was
worn out and gave up the fight.
Lou Bath then rode Hunter Boy, a
powerful, wild, black t timal. The
horse had to be blindfolded to get the
saddle on and trembled with excitement
as Bath prepared to mount him. Bath
is a steady old Texas rider and was do
ing well until Hunter Buy got his head
down and bolted for the line. Eds head
went under the repe, which caught Bath
about the neck and dragged him from
the saddle. Hunter Boy went into the
crowd of horses, wagons and spectators
with the rope, which had caught on the
pommel of the saddle, and 15 or 20
stakes dragging behind him. The rope
caught under a buggy and capsized it,
spilling its occupants into the general
mix up. Mounted cowboys finally caught
Hunter Boy before any serious results
happened, and he was brought back in
to the ring, from which the ropes were
taken to prevent another tangle. Bath
* again mounted, and his horse again
broke for the line. In two jumps he took
the wheels off two wagons, threw sev
eral ladies to the grdtmd and caused a
general stampede, the crowd melting
away before his charges like snow away
from a rotary plow. This horse was the
strongest ridden during the day, and it
took his rider three-quarters of an hour
to subdue him.
Will Simpson then rode a gray ani
mal. The horse was not bad and was
entirely too gentle for the crowd. Simp
son then rode Black Star, the most vi
cious animal brought into the ring. He
did not run. but he kicked, bucked and
whirled, and no one but a perfect mas
ter could have kept his seat.
Burt Schenck, who has been with
Buffalo Bill during the past season as a
rough rider, then rode a beautiful bay.
The animal bolted and got clear of the
inclosure. He ran across the plains for
nearly a mile before Schenck could get
him turned and headed back to the ring.
Six cowboys then gave an exhibition
of rough riding, mounting and dismount
ing while the horses were running and
picking hats and handkerchiefs from the
ground while going at full speed.
The carnival ended today with a pa
rade, in which nearly 200 riders on gay
ly decorated horses rode about the town,
and with a grand cowboys’ ball.—St
Louis Globe-Democrat.

he had no doubt that the committee

MEXICAN TOBACCO.
It Promises to Displace tho Cuban Product
In the World’s Markets.
Consul General Crittenden reports
from Mexico to the state department
that Mexican tooacco promises to take
the place of the fine grades of Cuban
tobacco in the markets cf the world.
The report is an exhaustive review of
the tobacco resources cf Mexico and pre
sents the subject in a new and impor
tant light. General Crittenden makes
no mention of the Cuban war as a cause
of tlie depletion of Cuba’s tobacco prod
uct, but he points out that under nor
mal conditions Cuba’s soil has become
impoverished until it can yield no more.
Under these circumstances, the consul
general says, the world’s requirements
of what are generally known as “Ha
vana cigars” can be supplied only
through the use of Mexican leaf tobacco.
Already great tracts of country are
being operated as tobacco plantations,
and the product equals the best from the
famous tobacco sections of Cuba. The
tobacco lands can bo extended over a
territory JOO times greater than Cuba’s
tobacco region. England, France and
other countries are using large quanti
ties of this tobacco. General Crittenden
says it promises to make Mexico rich
from its tobacco alone. Necessarily,
however, Mexico will raise the leaf, and
the finished article will bo manufac
tured elsewhere.
“Why should not the tobacco men of
the United States see their way to con
trol this business, which is certain to
assume colossal proportions?” asks the
consul general.
In conclusion ho suggests the advisa
bility of a United States commissioner
to itivi'stigiite tho tobacco and coffee re
sources of Mexico.

A FAMOUS RECIPE.
How the Hoboken Turtle Club Concocts
Its Time Honored Turtle Soup.
Good livers will be intensted in this
recipe.
By it 150 pounds of turtle will pro
duce 80 gallons cf soup. It is the recipe
used by the Hoboken Turtle club for
many generations, at.-d tho original
recipe is now in the Lands of the stew
ard of the cl üb:
Take a kettle i f CO gallons capacity
and fill nearly full of water. Put in 8
sets of calves’ feet (32), well cleaned,
and 30 necks of beef. To this add 2
dozen parsley, 1 dozen leeks, a half peck
of small onions and sat and pepper to
suit. Boil the whole to rags, about 20
hours.
Kill the turtle, scald off the t hin out
side glazed portion and take off fins. Put
the shell, cut up into small pieces, into
boiling water until the citron comes off.
Then add the turtle meat, also cut in
small pieces. To this add the neat of 8
calves’ heads which have been suffi
ciently boiled to remove tho skin.
Strain off the stock through a fine
sieve. Strain twice out of pot and back
again. Now add citron and boil three
hours. Then add turtle neat and calves’
heads and boil the whole until the cit
ron is wholly done.
Add these spices: Quarter pound each
of ground allspice, ground cloves, ground
mace and ground nutmegs, a pound of
sweet marjoram and the same of thyme
and summer savory, with black and
cayenne pepper to taste.
Put the spices into two small salt
bags and drop into the pct until satis
factorily seasoned, taking out and put
ting in again from time to time and
occasionally squeezing the bags into the
pot.
After adding tho turtle meat and
calves’ heads boil five hours until all
the sour taste is gone. Boil over a slow
tiro and be sure to keep well stirred to
avoid burning.
When cooked and poured into vessels,
let it get perfectly cool before covering
up or touching with a spoon. It should
assume a gelatinous consistency. Keep
at name temperature. Use 2 gallons each
of claret, sherry and brandy.
