MEN WHO LEAD IN TRADE.
Progressive Business Men Who Believe in Rome, Floyd
County and Their People.
They Are the Ones Who Have Built Up the City and Made it the
Great Trade Center It Is—Safe Methods and Honest Transac
tions Have Brought Wealth and Prosperity to Them—
Rome’s Commercial Wealth Due to Their Enterpiise.
Buying clothes is one thing: getting
a perfect fit out of the best material
is quite another. If you want to feel
like you are well clothed and want to
look like you are well clothed all
you have to do is to step into the es
tablishment of the Burney Tailoring
company on Broad street and ask
Burney to take your measure.
The price is a secondary considera
tion as Burney sells good clothing so
eheap that there will never be any
trouble about the cost. He has laid in
an elegant stock of the very latest
styles and patterns and is prepared to
fit his customers up with new holiday
suits to the queen’s taste.
The Burney Tailoring company does
not deal in shoddy goods. They have
started out with the idea of selling
first class goods at as low prices as you
have heretofore been paying for
shoddy stuffs.
And then their system of measure
ment is such that they guarantee per
fect satisfaction in the fit as well as in
the finish of every suit or. single gar
ment turned out of their establish
ment.
Before you order your next suit drop
in at Burneys and look through the
elegant line of goods which they carry
and ask them something about the
prices. A most agreeable surprise is in
store for you there if you have not
heretofore been patronizing the Bur
ney Tayloring Company.
Substantial Bargains.
While you are investing in Christ,
mas goods remember that the best
bargains are those that are substan
tial and that will be of service after
the fun and frolic of the holidays are
over.
For that reason it will pay you to
drop into the great furniture estab
lisbment of the McDonald-Sparks-
Stewart Company, where you will find
some of the most useful and beautiful
goods that have ever been offered in
this or any other market.
The ambition of this firm is to lead
in variety, styles and prices, and they
have already achieved a widespread
reputation in all three particulars.
They have some of the most beautiful
and stylish furniture in the way of
bed-room suits, parlor suits, book
cases, writing desks, hat racks, dress
ers, washstands, china closets, rockers,
ornamental center tables and every
thing else in the way of furniture that
have ever been seen in Rome.
The only explanation of their abil
ity to handle such an enormous stock
and such a vast variety of goods is the
fact that they are leaders in low prices
and they enjoy a large and daily in
creasing patronage from alloverthe
territory contiguous to Rome,
A Rushing Business.
It is a mystery to a great many of his
customers how Leonard G. Todd is to
keep up with his orders. There is always
a rush at his store from morning to night
and his delivery men are kept on a run
supplying his customers with goods pur
chased from his splendid-stock.
Mr. Todd is a young merchant of whom
Rome is justly proud. He has only been
in business about three years, but has
established a reputation that many an
older merchant might envy. In addi
tion to his pluck and perseverance he has
had the experience and sound business
judgment of his father, Mr. L. A. Todd,
at his back and he has built up a trade
that is phenomenal in its extent.
He keeps on hand at all times the very
l>est. freshest and most desirable of fancy
and family groceries, canned goods of
every variety, tobacco, snuff and cigars,
crackers, candies and confectioneries,
dried fruits, jellies, country produce,
butter, chickens and eggs and fruits in
season.
He numbers among his nustome's some
of the best people iu Home and his store
is always crowned with customers both
in the city and from the country, who
find that they can get more for their
money than they expected because his
prices are always as low as the lowest and
he sells the very highest class of groceries
at prices such as people have been ac
customed to paying for cheap and un
desirable goods. During the holidays he
will be prepared to supply all his cus
tomers with the nicest and most whole
some substantiate and dainties and he
extends to the public a cordial invitation
to call and see him before laying in their
supplies.
The Man and the Place.
The Hill City restaurant is the place to
get what you want to eat and drink and
Mr. Henry G. Stoffregen is the manto see
that you are properly served. He has
made a great success of his business as a
grocer, restauranteur and is agent for the
famous Christian Moerlein beer. He
keeps one of the most popular places in
Home and his big-hearted, generous na
ture and loyalty to the interests of Rome
have won for him a host of friends anl
admirers in the city. During the holi
days he will be prepared to serve his cus
tomers with the very best to bchad in
the city and from his first class bakery
will supply bread, cakes and pies to his
customers of the freshest and most desir
able quality at the very lowest prices.
Drop in at Stoffregen’s and get something
nice to eat and- refreshing to drink for
you will find him and his clerks always
ready to serve with the very best. Every
body knows Stoffregen, everybody likes
him and his business has grown to won
derful proportions. He deserves all the
success he has achieved and is a fixture
with the Roman public.
Rome's Great Hostlery.
Among her many other attractions
Rome boasts one of the greatest hostleries
in North Georgia.
The Armstrong was planned and con
structed with a view to giving Rome a
hotel first-class in all its appointments
and the builders succeeded beyond their
expectations. It is a large and imposing
structure located in the heart of the busi
ness portion of the city and is elegantly
furnished from top to bottom, supplied
with every thing necessary for the comfort
and convenience of the traveling public.
Mr. T. C. Smith is leasee and proprietor
of the hotel and it has enjoyed an increased
patronage because of his large personal
popularity, his extended quiintunce
ship and his genial and affable disposi
tion.
As manager of the hotel, Mr. Gay'.e
Ford fills the bill exactly. He is a born
hotel keeper and spares no pains or ex
pense to make his guests feci perfectly at
home when they register at the Arm
strong.
He has in his employ a skilled steward,
Mr. A W. McCall, of long experince and
the Armstrong menu is equal to that of
any of the large hotels in cities many
times the size of Rome.
His table is supplied with the best to
be had in the market and his guests are
served with polite and attentive waiters
and the sleeping appartments are all that
the most fastidious could require.
The elegant parlors of the Armstrong
are frequently called into requisition by
the wealth and beauty of Rome’s fashion
able society and the germans of the
Conesene club are always held in the par
lors of the Armstrong. It is in fact a
place where everybody visiting Rome
calls as a guest or in search of information
and in either instance all who go there
are greeted with a cordial welcome.
Some of the most prominent society and
business people in Rome live in apart
ments at the Armstrong.
Holiday Books,
It would not be amiss to call Mr, 11. A.
Smith a bookkeeper, but the trouble is.
he never keeps one set of books long at a
time.
There is too much demand for the books
he keeps, and has been for thirty years,
and the demand grows greater as the
holidays approach, so that he has to
keep ordering more books, music, and
holiday goods to supply the growing
demand.
The people of Rome are people of cul
ture and they are just hungering and
thirsting after knowledge and 11. A.
Smith is doing his best 10 gratify their
taste by providing the best products of
the press at the lowest prices.
He has an extensive stock of stationery,
school supplies, picture, picture frames,
wall paper at prices within the reach of
every one.
He has, also, some organs, pianos, and
sheet music at prices to astonish you.
They Sell Shoes.
When men of capacity, skill and ex
perience undertake to run one special
line they are sure to succeed if they per
serve. This has been the experience of
Cantrell & Owens.
Everybody knows that goods bought of
Cantrell & Owens carry with them a
guarantee from a firm that is unim
peachable in its integrity and business
methods.
They handle all styles of shoes for men
ladies and children’s wear and carry
the best lines turned out by the leading
manufacturers of the country.
They number among their customers
the very best people in Rome and they
have enjoyed a large trade during the
past season. For the holidays they have
everything from the daintiest slippers
down to the stoutest footwear for men.
Hsnson Leads the Way,
One of the handsomest establish
ments in the city of Rome is that of
Mr. F. Hanson. Mr. Hanson is no
stranger to |he people of Rome, for
he has introduced himself thoroughly
to the public, through the excellence
of his work.
He has fitted up his establishment
with an elegant, line of plumbing, gas
and electric, fixtures of every variety,
and his work Is the equal of any to be
found in the largest cities in the coun
try. He lived for many years in Rome,
and served his apprenticeship here.
He then left here and worked in other
large cities, becoming an expert in
the pluumbing trade.
About three years ago he returned 1

has been kept busy filling the orders
that has come from every source in
his various lines. He also carries on
the tinning business, and employs

’ that line.
! Mr. Hanson has carried out the con
’ tract for plumbing, gas and electric
! fittings insueh buildings as the Rome
: postoffice, under government super
vision, and his work has always given
universal satisfaction. He now has
the contract for an elegant job of
plumbing on the McAllen B. Marsh
5 residence at Woodstock, near Cave
3 Spring, and the residence of Dr. Dar
lington, C. E. MeLin in this count}.
To all in need of the services of a first
’ class plumber, fitter and tinner, Mr.
i Hanson offers his services, guarantee
, ing satisfaction, at the most moderate
. prices.
Cash Sales, Small Profits.
Over in the Fourth ward is located
' one of the most prosperous business
establishments in the city. It is the
. Watters Grocery Company, a con
[ cern that has for its motto, “cash
I sales and small profits.” The proprie-
■ tors of this establishment conduct
their business fully in accordance with
that motto.
The Watters Grocery Company
• keeps constantly on hand a complete
, stock of fancy and family groceries.
They make a specialty of country pro
duce, and handle the very best class

ed a reputation in the line of cigars.
Since he began the manufacture of
cigars in Rome his business has stead
ily increased, until now yon will find
Warters’ cigars on sale in every town.
He is now making a special run on

of the best five cent cigars ever placed

One of the most successful establish
ments in Rome is the branch music

The business has recently been moved
to The Tribune building where their

, of musical instruments at the very low
est prices. Those who patronize E. E.
Forbes may rest assured of getting the
very best to be found in the market at
the very lowest prices and on the very
easiest terms.
A Good Warm Fire.
■ Mr. J. W. Hancock is a thoroughly
progressive citizen and is in close touch
and sympathy with the wants of the
people. He knows that a good warm
tire is one of the most attractive and
agreeable things about a house. Not
only that but he knows aud everybody
else knows that it is an absolute neces
sity during cold weather.
The beauty of Mr. Hancock’s business
js that in summer he furnishes ice to
keep you cool and in winter coal to keep
you warm. He is just now making a
specialty of the coal business and is
prepared to furnish the public with the
very best coal in the market at remark
ably low figures.
The little cold snaps that we have had
so fur arc just forerunners of mi exceed
ingly hard winter. That is the general
opinion of the experts. So you had bet
ter call on Hancock and order your sup
ply while you can get it on easy terms.
As the hard cold increases, the price of
coal goes up and the difficulty and delay in
I delivering are doubled in bud weuther.
In time of peace prepare for war by
ordering your coal for the winter from J.
W. Hancock, He gives you good weight
and when you buy a ton of coal you get
