THE HOLIDAY RACES
Atlanta Will Have Three Solid Weeks
01 It.
DOWLING IS TO BE MANAGER
Kas> Fine Horses W 11 Be Entered For the
Va-ions Matches and Much Moisey
Will Be Put Ip.
Atlanta is to have a series of inter
e sting horse races during the holidays.
Yesterday was the opening day of
the series which will be continued for
three weeks and culminate with the
grand races on New Year’s Day.
Christmas week will be a time of great
interest to all the sports, since it is
during that time that the most itn.
. portant races take place.
For Christmas week the manage
ment of the races has arranged for six
harness and ten running races with
purses ranging from SSO to S3OO and
suitable to all classes of horses. It is
now an assured fact that not only the
fastest horses, but the higher element
of owners will participate.
On his advertising programme Man
ager Dowling has a clause which will
bar from the races all except the very
best class of horse owners. This is the
clause demanding the identification o
all entries.
The programme for the races of the
16th, which contains reference to the
events of Christmas week, has been
mailed all over the south and no small
number of inquiries have been received
by Manager Dowling. The letters re
ceived show not only a willingness but
an anxiety on the part of owners of
good horses to come to Atlanta.
The programme for the 16th is an in
teresting one and will no doubt attract
a large crowd to the track. The first
event is a half-mile running race, best
two out of three heats for a purse of SSO.
Mr. Ira Steiner claimed this race for
the Atlanta Brewing and Ice Company,
of wnich he is brewmaster and foreman.
He put up the amount of the purse
The second event is in the hands of Mr.
Jim Lynch, who will raise the necessa
ry purse of S2OO by popular subscription.
This is a free for all trot and will be the
event of the day, since it is subscribed
for by the merchants of Atlanta.
The three quarter-mile dashes will
have many fast ones among the start
ers and it is expected that a state
record will be established for the dis
tance. Indications are that the mixed
race for trotting and pacing for the
three-minntes class will have the most
entries and will be not only interest
i«g, but will very likely be a split-heat
affair, as most of the horses eligible
are uaKnown to the public
The following is the programme and
conditions for December 16th:
First race, purse SSO, by Atlanta
Brewing and Ice Company—Half mile
beats; four to enter, three to start.
Second race, purse S2OO, by popular
donations from merchants of Atlanta

ter-mile dash; four to enter, three to

Fourth race, purse sloo—Three min
ute trot and pace; five to enter, four
to start.
Entrance fee to accompany each en
try. Races-called at 1:30 p. m.
Condition of the Racua
Advertised condition of the races will
have precedence over all rules. National
Trotting Association rules are to govern.
Money is to be devided—6o per cent to
first, 30 per cent to second and 10 per
cent to third. Records made since August
15th constitute no bar.

the girl fell on her head. A few months
ago she complained that there was a
mist before her eyes. In a week she
was totally blind. After a consulta
tion. it was decided to try the x rays.
The girl was taken to Mr. Edison’s lab
oratory at Orange.
The x rays wore turned on and fo
cused against the side of the child’s
head Dr. Badey could see the bone
pressing down on the little girl’s brain,
and a dark sha.lmV between its convolu
tions. It was a bloodclot. A plaque
was he’d beJure the child's eyes while
the rays were still being tin-own on her
head. She was able to see the shadow.
An operation was performed, aud it,
was found that the x rays had told the
truth— a bit of bone pressed upon the
interior portion of the brain, and a blood
clot extended down and pressed upon
the optic commissure, eaur-iug blindness
to both eyes. The clot was carefully
ent away and the skull was trephined,
two or three large buttons of bones be
ing taken out.
“Tnere is no .reason why the child’s
eyesight should not be fully restored,”
said Dr. Bailey.

Wanted —A Turkey Call.
Here is a chance for an inventor. About
the only good way to entice young turkeys
within gun range is to lure them with a
turkey call. Only the experts can call an
old gobbler, and one has to be a good one
to deceive an unsophisticated youngster.
Jirat is because no one lias yet devised a
turkey call that does not require long
practice and skill to manipulate. Ibero
have bean turkey bone and turkey quill
calls without number. Cue man uses a
piece of jagged edged slate and a cigar box,
another uses bis tongue and fingers, a
third blows a reed, and the rest have each
bis own favorite contrivance. A corre
spondent of a sportsmen’s paper offers $5
for a good call, one that anybody could use.
And there.are hundreds like him.—New
York Sun.
There are a great many of the un
fortunate ones this world, greater

with good digestion. To some people
the greatest misfortune is not to be
able to eat everything set before them.
