Happenings up st that Thriving Little City of
Whitfield.
Dalton. Dec. 14.—A. E. White, a
merchant here doing a small business,and
no advertising has faded. White invest
ed too much money is an alleged amuse
ment vet ture known as East Lake,
lie had a crudt -home made merry -go
round, a shootmg-the-chute and a dance
hall, it proved a sad venture.
The young ladies will hold open house
here on New Year’s and the day is being
looked forward to with pleasurable antic
ipations.
The Bookmen and The Lesche will
both give swell receptions during the
holidays.
A baby show was held last week and
the little baby of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Manly took first prize and the little
one of Mr. and Mrs. John Berry took
second. Two drummers were judges
and immediately after the decision
one got on his bike and skipped out
while the other took a hack for Cal
houn. ,
The ladies of the Presbyterian church
cleared two hundred dollars at their
bazar last week. The credit is due to
Mrs. L.W, Babcock, Mrs. R. M. Her
ron, Mrs, James Herron and the young
ladiesof the congregation.
The Tribune is growing in popularity
here and with Messrs. Folsom and
Reynolds furnishing copy it can’t but
be a good paper.

JOSEPH HALLINAN IN JAIL.
Former Bookkeppwr For a Savannah Firm

Savannah, Dec. 14.—Joseph Halli
nau, former bookkeeper for Schwarzs
child & Sultzberger. is in jail on a
charge of embezzlement. Auditor J. S.
Caldwell, for the company, who has
been here two or three days checking np
the accounts, has so far discovered a
shortage of about SIO,OOO, on the strength
of which he swore out the warraut.
Hallinan was book keener with J. W.
Wyness as manager. Wyness died re
cently as a result of a pistol shot wound,
and his death no doubt brought on the
investigation. Both were under bond,
Hallinan’s surety being the Fidelity and
Deposit company of Maryland, which,
it is believed, will urge the prosecution.
Hallinan has a wealthy uncle who will
settle the claim for him as soon as the
auditor determines just what it amounts
to. _

Montgomery. Ala., Dec. 14. —Within
two months the subscribers here to the
Southern Bell Telephone company will
be enabled to talk to friends in Opelika,
Atlanta and more than 100 towns in
East Alabama and Georgia. Lines are
now in operation from Selma and Mont
gomery and from Opelika to Atlanta
A large force of hands is now at work
completing the gap between Montgom
ery and O e.ika. The route is via Mt.
Meigs and the total di taiice is 68 miles.
Nothing but the very best copper wire
will be used in the construction of the
line, the wire alone costing about S6O
per mile.
