The two cities have selected the best
man, for each |x»sition, to be had. The
Atlanta team witl contain five veterans of
the girdiron that have been honored by
being captains of their respective teams.
Wood the Techs trainer is also on the At
lanta team. He was tackle for the Cen
ter (Ky.) college team several years ago
when they played such good ball.
On Rome’s team Pomeroy. Cothran,
Morris and Gammon are on the regular
University of Georgia team for ’96 and are
crack players. W. West has made an
enviable reputation as center for the
Techs’ ’96 team.
F. Tichnor on Atlanta's side is the fa
mous quarter-back and captain of Au
burns 96. Elemore and the man who
plays such “good” football for the Al
abamians.
The understanding as to the result
of the game between the teams is that
the winning team is to be called the
champion of the South, outside of
the college teams.
The officials are as follows: Prof.
Monte Gammon, referee; Heisman
(Auburn’s tracer), umpire; linemen,
Hardin and Reynolds; time keeper,
Dr F. A. Wynn. The game will be
called at 2:30 promptly Christmas day.

SNIP GOES HUNTIG.
And Makis a Brilliant Record for Himself
and Dog.
One night last week Will Hardman,
Newton county’s champion shot, came
down for a bird hunt the next day.
I don’t think I ever spent a more rest
less night in my life.
I knew Will was hard to beat on the
wing, had shot a gun five hundred times
to my one and whether I would get a
shot at all was what was troubling me.
Bright and early next morning several
joined us, with some fine blooded bird
dogs that proved the best hunters I ever
saw.
I hated very much to with them, but I
had a gun that I did not believe came all
the way from Belgirn for nothing.
I nerved myself up as much as I could
and with a meat bag to carry my game in
I went on the hunt.
The great trouble with me lam very

The fiibt covey we fount! iny gun went

one bird that V ill got as he w ent off
I thought nothing of this as I have of
ten heard of it. I forgot to mention that
the boys agreed at the start to five me
the first shot. We did not proceed very
far when I was calle i to the front again,
as • Pat” had pointed another covey.
This time I thought I would be more
cautious and shoot a little lower. Just
as they flushed I pulled the trigger, strik
ing the ground about six inches in their
rear, burying them under under dirt and
trash, causing snch a shock that I meal
bagged the whole business before they
could„recover.
I have o'ten read of such things, but
the boys said they never heard of its be
ing done before, and nothing I could do
would induce them to go any further on
a bird hunt.
We then went dow n on “Ijcet” swamp
to hunt buck rabbits. I knew nothing
about buck rabbits —never saw one—but
I followed them.
I was afraid of a bear, so I remained on
the out edges of the swamp, while the
boys all went in to ruu ont the bucks.
Pretty soon I saw the cane begin to
open and something ran out just in time
to receive the contents of my gun and
down it came. I knew not what.
Neighbor Womack came running up
with hie eyes shining like the headlight
of a locomotive, and said he: “You
blamed fool, vou’ve killed bv butt headed
calf!”
That en led the rabbit hunt,’ and the
boys agreed tj. get me home, and the
quicker the better. On our way home
the dogs ran what I took to be a very
large "possum in a hollow log. I ran my
gun up the log ani shot—and pulled out
Mrs. Snip’s favorite house cat, dead. I
am lone hunting now, nnd will rest on
my laurels—for awhile at least.

New Kentucky Tollgate* I’oi t» l>(»wn
Versailles, Ky.. Dec. 21. Turnpike
regulators made their third raid iu this
county at midnight, destroying five or
six of the new tollgates that were built
this week to replace the ones chopped
down two weeks ago. The gates were
on the Versailles and Nicholasville and
Troy and Cummings Ferry roads. Gate
keeper Allen Jeff, of the Nicholasville
road, was warned by the mob that it
womd not be well for him to be there
when they came again. A man whose
dwelling the regulators passed says
there were nearly 100 men in the mob.
which is four times as many us were iu
the former raids.
