OUTLET FOR ATHENS
Seaboard Sa’d io Be Friendly to a
Projected Road.
NEW SHORT .LINE TO AUGUSTA
It Would Reduce the Dl.tnuce Krom At
lanta By Se enteen Mlloa—’oldier
Silis ll<ke.eto Scalper*
Bvltimore, Mrt., December 22. —It if
reported, ou what appears to be good
authority, that the Seaboard Air-Line
railroad is seriously considering the re
newal of the old effort to complete the
link between Athens and Augusta, and
it is said that negotiations are now on
foot looking to the building of that line
at a date as early as practicable
While nothing definite has been done
as yet, there is no donbt about the fact
that that the Seaboard people hart
been negotiating lately with parties
closely identified with the effort tt
build this connection; and whether or
not it is the purpose of the Seaboard ti
build independently or to get back of
those who have been interested in this
enterprise, it is impossible to say. That
the movement has been put on foot
again, however, is certain.
Should this link be built it would
put Augusta seventeen miles nearer
Atlanta than by the present nearest
direct route, the Georgia railroad
The survey has been carefully made;
and the fact that the route proposed
by the Seaboard from Atlanta to
Athens and from Athens to Augusta
shortens the distance to Augusta bar
had, it is said, considerable weight
with the Seaboard people. Should
the line be built, Atlanta would thus
have the advantage not only of an
other line to Augusta, but it would
receive the benefit of the water rates
between Augusta and Savannah, thus
giving Atlanta virtually another direct
freight line to Savannah, while, by
the proposed connection with the
South C irolina and Georgia railroad
at Augusta, another direct route to
Charleston would be obtained.
Efforts have been made to induce the
Seaboard people to take up the old Chat
lanooga and Augusta project and build
direct from Chattanooga via Athens to
Augusta. It is said, however, that this
will not be considered; though should
the link between Athens and Augusta be
built by the Seabord. there is no doubt
that in time that between Chattanooga
and Athens would be pushed to comple
tion, if not by the Seaboard, at least
by friendly interests. Now that the
Northwestern railroad is to be sold by the
state, it is pos-ible that it may form a
part of the link to Chattanooga, though
it is said that this is a matter with which
the seaboard will have nothing to do.
The building of the link between
Athens and Augusta would, it is said,
open one of the best sections of Georgia
to the Seaboard, and as the line so opened
would form part of the most direct route
between Atlanta and Augusta, it is high
ly probable that there is something in the
rumor. If the Seaboard people are not
directly interested in the movement they
are at least in close touch with somebody
who is. •
Tne officials of the road refuse to talk
about the matter.

The Morning News says that a firm
in Savannah received an order ydster
day for one dozen barrels of sand. The

Tne sand was ordered shipped by ex
press at once to Mr. Vanderbilt’s place
at Biltmore, N. C.
The order was received in ’the morn
ing and by noon the sand had been de
livered to the express company. The
price of the sand was 50 cents a barrel.

and why he should have ordered it ex
pressed are all subjects sos speculation.
Sand is supposed to be plentiful in the
neighborhood of Mr. Vanderbilt’s North
Carolina palaoe and there are no pecu
liar qualities in Savannah sand, so far
as known here. If there are any Mr.
Vanderbilt would confer a great favor
upon the people of this locality by in
forming them of this fact at once.
Tnere is plenty of sand here. Tybee
alone could supply enough to bury Bilt
more palace out of sight.
Tue only reasonable theory on the sub
ject advanced is that Mr. Vanderbilt has
dedicated a spot upon his beautiful
;rounds to Savannah and desires to
nark it with sand from this locality
Sand is a rare shipment with the ex
press, but Mr. Vanderbilt is a rich man
md could afford to order a few carloads
at the regular rates if he felt so inclined.
TO CUBA HE GOES.
Senaor Wllc:x of Coffee County To Fight
for Freedom.
Atlanta, Dec., 23—Senator Wilcox
left Monday for his home in Cof
fee county and he will soon start for
'nba. In speaking of his trip he said
yesterday:
“The Constitution of Saturday,
which contained an article about my
plans and stating that I intended to
raise a company to go to Cuba, reached
my postoffice, Willacoochee, about 4
o’clock that afternoon. Inside of two
hours I received a telegram saying that
dirty men had enlisted and would b*
ready to leave on a day’s notice. I d<
uot think that I shall take a company
»ver right now, but will go across first
myself and look around. Then I «hal
come back and get my company. There
will be no trouble about raising a com
pany. All day Saturday men were
coming up to the senate chamber and
many of them expressed a desire to go
to Cuba and they begged me to let them
know when I get ready to start. There
was one young fellow who said that he
is a member of a military company
nere in Atlanta. He is a fine looking
ycung man and would make a good sold
ier. He said he would go as a private
or anything just so he could get to join
the Cuban army, lam informed that
there is very little danger in crossin
and landing. On dark nights a vesse
can run in and land supplies and men
and get fifty’ miles away’ by morning.
The gunboats patrol the coast, I under
stand, but it is easy to avoid them. Run
uing the blockade in war times was dan
gerous business, but this is different
‘ ‘The South Georgia boys are anxious
to go and it would be an easy matter to
get up a small army right down there. ”
Senator Wilcox is not afraid of yellow
fever. He is a South Georgian and
says that he is proof against fevers. Be
sides he is a physician and could treat
himself and men. He and his men will
fight for glory and the love of advent
ure. They do not look for pay and as
s’ated on Saturday, will equip tbem

Kansas < ity*s Bij* Poultry ’'how.
Kansas City, Dec. 22. —The annual
poultry show, which has just opened
here, is one of the largest ever held in
this countr- There are 3,000 exhibit

are filled with so many thousand fowls
that the managers of the show cannot
tell how many there are. Exhibits are
here from all over the country, as well
as from abroad. William McNeil, from.
L ndou, Canada, is foremost among the
foreign exhibitors. Speaking of the
show, Mr. McNeil said: “Instead of
going to the New York show, I came
here with 600 fowls. It cost me SI,OOO
to transport my fowls out here. The
show is wonderful in its extent.”
A Mau and Woman Asphyxiated.
Boston, Dec. 22.—The employes of
the Hampton House detected a strong
smell of gas in the corridor early Tues
day morning and on investigation found
that it came from a room which had
been assigned a couple who registered
as Donald Donovan and wife. Entrance
to the room was gained by the fire escape,
and the man and woman were found
lying in bed, the woman dead and the
man unconscious. Gas was escaping
from an open burner. The man’s case
was pronounced critical.
MoNell Will Not Be a Bidder.
Portland, Or., Dec. 22.—Officials of
the Oregon Railway and Navigation
company in this city say that President
McNeil has no intention of becoming a
